Notes: Abstract.  Raman spectra have been investigated in PbTiO3 thin films grown on Si by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. A large grazing-angle scattering technique was taken to measure the temperature dependence of Raman spectra below room temperature. All Raman modes in the thin films are assigned and compared with those in the bulk single crystal, a new A 1(TO) soft mode at 104 cm-1 was recorded which satisfies the Curie-Weiss relation ω2=A(T c−T). Intensities of the A 1(1TO) and E(1TO) modes were anomalously strengthened with increasing temperature. Raman modes for the thin films exhibit remarkable frequency downshift and upshift which is related to the effect of internal stress.

Notes: Abstract.  (001) textured PbTiO3 thin films have been deposited on (001) redoping n-Si substrates by metalorgnic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) under reduced pressure, and the film ferroelectricity has been measured using the substrate as bottom electrode directly. Besides this investigation, a set of analysis including AFM surface morphology, SEM cross section morphology, electron-probe element analysis, XRD θ-2θ scan and high temperature X-ray diffraction have been carried out to study the microstructure and phase transition process of the PbTiO3 thin film.

Notes: 3 thin films have been prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition under reduced pressure. The formation of ferroelectric domains in films grown on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates was investigated by synchrotron radiation and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. Single-domain (3000-Å thick) and multi-domain (4500-Å thick) PbTiO3 films were produced on SrTiO3. For multi-domain PbTiO3 film, the c-domain presented epitaxial structure with its c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface, while a-domains aligned four-fold symmetrically with c-domains by 2.79° off the c-axis of c-domains. In the film, the measured lattice constants (a, b and c) of the a- and c-domains were different from each other, indicating that the films suffered a modulated strain during domain formation. In contrast, both the a and c domains of films on LaAlO3 were alternatively aligned on substrate with the a-axis of the a-domain and the c-axis of c-domains perpendicular to the substrate surface. Two-dimensional distribution of these domains is proposed and the formation of these kinds of domains is discussed. The surface morphology and phase transition process of single and multi domain PbTiO3 film on SrTiO3 were studied by atomic force microscope (AFM) and high temperature X-ray diffraction, respectively.

Notes: We have grown epitaxial and polycrystalline LaMnOy thin films on a LaAlO3 substrate by the off-axis magnetron sputtering technique and investigated the crystalline orientation effects on the electronic transport properties. Lattice mismatch, crystalline quality, resistivity, resistivity transition temperature Tp, and magnetoresistance (MR) in epitaxial films exhibit crystalline orientation dependence. The largest Tp and MR are observed in the (111) oriented films. In the polycrystalline films, the Tp is smaller than that of the (011)/(111) oriented films but higher than that of the (001) oriented films. The MR increases with decreasing temperature in contrast to that of the epitaxial films in which the MR experiences a peak near Tp. Oxygen annealing decreases MR and resistivity, and increases Tp in the order: (111)〈(011)〈(001)〈(polycrystalline). The above results suggest that the structure and composition of the epitaxial films improve in the order: (001)〈(011)〈(111). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present an analysis of the steady state optical response of two-dimensional optical superlattices with Kerr nonlinearity. We consider the effects of the modification of the refractive index modulation strengths in the superlattices and the angular deviation of incoming radiation from Bragg conditions. We find that under Bragg incidence the system displays optical bistability only when the modulation ratio exceeds a certain threshold. We also predict that optical bistability can disappear under non-Bragg incidence. Physical considerations are presented and discussed on how to optimize the chances for observing optical bistability in such a superlattice. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transparent single-phase rubidium titanyl phosphate (RTP) films having excellent crystalline properties have been deposited by excimer laser ablation method on (001)- and (010)-oriented potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) substrates, respectively. X-ray θ-2θ scans and pole figures showed that the laser-ablated RTP films grew epitaxially on, and had exactly the same orientations of, the underlying KTP substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the RTP films prepared with this method are nearly stoichiometric. It appears to be possible to use these films as waveguides having sharp waveguide/substrate interfaces. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: With Bi3TiNbO9 (BTN) ferroelectric samples, in situ electrical-field-induced growth of ferroelectric thin films was demonstrated to control the films' microstructure and manipulate their ferroelectric properties. BTN films on Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were grown at a relatively low temperature (650 °C) with a biased electrical field during pulsed-laser deposition. The (001) orientation of the films, which makes no contribution to their polarization, was effectively reduced by the in situ electrical field of strength of 70 V/cm. This results in a large increase of remnant polarization from 1.1 to 6.2 μC/cm2, and reduction of the coercive field from 70 to 50 kV/cm, comparing the films grown freely under the same condition. Furthermore, the films showed an excellent fatigue-free property of up to 1010 switching cycles. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bi-based layered ferroelectric thin films of Sr2Bi4Ti5O18 (SBTi) were prepared by pulsed-laser deposition. The c-axis-oriented SBTi films were grown on SrRuO3 seeded Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates while polycrystalline SBTi films were grown on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. The measurements of ferroelectricity revealed that the direction of spontaneous polarization was not along the c axis since the polarization of c-axis-oriented films was much less than that of randomly oriented films. There was no significant degradation of switchable charge at least up to 1011 cycles for the randomly oriented films, suggesting that, even with Ti which was widely accepted to contribute to the fatigue of Pb(Zr, Ti)O3, SBTi showed superior fatigue characteristics. The randomly oriented films also showed excellent retention characteristics after 105 s. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
