    Interstitial nitrogen induced by low-energy ion beam nitridation of AIII–BV semiconductor surfaces (2001)

    Notes: The nitridation of GaAs, InAs, and InSb by low-energy N2+ ion bombardment at room temperature was studied by near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The formation of thin surface nitride layers, consisting mostly of GaN or InN but also containing minor amounts of mixed nitrides, was observed. Besides the nitride-related features, sharp peaks in the NEXAFS due to π* resonance at 401.0 eV and correlated peaks at 403.8 eV in N 1s core level spectra were detected. Both spectral features could be assigned to the presence of interstitial nitrogen, most likely molecular nitrogen. It was found that the amount of interstitial nitrogen in the surface layer strongly depends on the AIII–BV semiconductor system and may be affected by modification of the conditions during low energy ion bombardment. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities in the Wendelstein 7-AS stellarator (W7-AS) [G. Grieger et al., Phys. Fluids B 4, 2081 (1992)] are characterized experimentally in various plasma parameter regimes and heating scenarios. The observations are compared with theoretical predictions for particular cases. In the high-β range (〈β〉≤2%) no clear evidence of a stability β-limit could be found yet. In the lower β regime fast particle driven global Alfvén modes are the most important instabilities during neutral beam injection (NBI). Besides of coherent modes with almost no effect on the plasma performance additional Alfvén modes appear at higher frequencies up to 400 kHz, which show nonlinear phenomena-like bursting, frequency chirping, and MHD induced energy and fast particle losses. The activity of edge localized modes (ELMs) is investigated in NBI heated discharges. The issue of current driven instabilities and their potential stabilization by a stellarator field has been investigated with regard to the design of compact hybrid stellarator systems. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Is Bax a mitochondrial mediator in apoptotic death of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease? (2001)

    Notes: Bax is a proapoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins. It is believed to exert its action primarily by facilitating the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondrial intermembrane space into the cytosol, leading to caspase activation and cell death. Because alterations in mitochondrial respiratory function, caspase activation and cell death with morphologic features compatible with apoptosis have been observed post mortem in the brain of patients with Parkinson's disease, we tried to clarify the potential role of Bax in this process in an immunohistochemical study on normal and Parkinson's disease post-mortem brain and primary mesencephalic cell cultures treated with MPP+. We found that Bax is expressed ubiquitously by dopaminergic (DA) neurons in post-mortem brain of normal and Parkinson's disease subjects as well as in vitro. Using an antibody to Bax inserted into the outer mitochondrial membrane as an index of Bax activation, no significant differences were observed between control and Parkinson's disease subjects, regardless of the mesencephalic subregion analysed. However, in Parkinson's disease subjects, the percentage of Bax-positive melanized SNpc neurons containing Lewy bodies, suggestive of DA neuronal suffering, was significantly higher than the overall percentage of Bax-positive neurons among melanized neurons. Furthermore, all melanized SNpc neurons in Parkinson's disease subjects with activated caspase-3 were also immunoreactive for Bax, suggesting that Bax anchored in the outer mitochondrial membrane of melanized SNpc neurons showing signs of neuronal suffering or apoptosis is increased compared with DA neurons that are apparently unaltered. Surprisingly, MPP+ treatment of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neurons in primary mesencephalic cultures did not cause redistribution of Bax, although cytochrome c was released from the mitochondria and nuclear condensation/fragmentation was induced. Taken together, these findings suggest that in the human pathology, Bax may be a cofactor in caspase activation, but our in vitro data fail to indicate a central role for Bax in apoptotic death of DA neurons in an experimental Parkinson's disease paradigm.

    Notes: Localized morphoea is an uncommon sclerosing skin disorder. Prognosis is usually good but it may lead to contractures, perturbed limb growth, atrophy, pigmentary changes and cosmetic disturbance. We describe a case of morphoea that developed in one breast in a 9-year-old white female. Treatment comprised topical ammonium lactate 12% cream and tretinoin 0.025% cream but no topical corticosteroids were prescribed. One year later she was noted to have bilateral symmetrical breast development and, although signs of morphoea were still present in one breast, the plaque had softened and there was no breast deformity. It is important to remember that most cases of morphoea improve spontaneously, although a number of possible therapeutic options may be indicated in some patients.

    Notes: Globalisation is manifested in the Mekong Region both through processes and discourses that reflect the ideology of a borderless world allowing easy passage of capital and commodities, and through resistance to such processes in an increasingly transnationalised civil society movement. However, more immediately significant supranational integrative agendas take the form of regionalisation, a process that has received less attention but which raises analogous concerns of re-scaled governance. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been a catalysing force for regionalisation amidst a host of regional processes and initiatives; as such it has found itself the object of critique as an institution and through the specific projects it has supported that have impacted on local communities and ecosystems. Meanwhile, local and NGO voices associated with the emergence of a vibrant civil society in Thailand and nascent civil society responses in neighbouring countries have challenged claims on resources made in the name of national development and regional integration.This paper considers some key issues of re-scaling resource and environmental politics in the Mekong Region, and the extent to which challenges have been recast from national to regional development agendas. Politics of environment are shown to exist as a general rather than exceptional response to the region’s development direction, and it is suggested that equitable and sustainable development increasingly needs to address simultaneously the re-scaling and reconfigurations of power in both environmental politics and the “infrapolitics” of environment. The paper is illustrated with case studies of dams in Laos and Thailand.

    Notes: Background, aims: This study investigated the periodontal status of non-smokers and ex-smokers in relation to their intake of low-dose aspirin.Methods: A self-selected sample of 392 males aged 50 years and over was recruited from the general population. Subjects were included in the study if they had a minimum of 6 or more natural teeth, took aspirin (300 mg or less per day) for at least 2 years and were either ex- or non-smokers. Controls were subjects who did not take aspirin regularly. A questionnaire was used to record demographic data, medical and dental histories. Individuals who had diabetes or other systemic diseases were excluded from the study. Periodontal attachment loss (PAL) was calculated by adding measurements of gingival recession and periodontal pocket depth made by a single examiner at 6 sites around each tooth using non-pressure sensitive periodontal probes. Plaque and gingival bleeding indices were also scored. Subjects were divided into 4 groups: aspirin non-smokers, aspirin ex-smokers, no aspirin non-smokers and no aspirin ex-smokers. Data were analysed using two-way ANOVA with age as the covariate. Severity and extent of mean PAL and the cumulative distribution of the mean of the most severe sites (MSS) of PAL were analysed.Results: Controlling for age, mean PAL in aspirin takers was significantly less 2.6±0.08 (se) mm than non-aspirin takers 2.9±0.06 (se) mm; this association was independent of smoking history. Ex-smokers had significantly more mean PAL 3.9±0.07 (se) mm than non-smokers 2.6±0.08 (se) mm, irrespective of aspirin status. When MSS-PAL was analysed, these differences became more pronounced; MSS-PAL in aspirin takers was significantly less 3.9±0.1 (se) mm than non-aspirin takers 4.2±0.08 (se) mm. Ex-smokers had significantly more MSS-PAL 4.3±0.08 (se) mm than non-smokers 3.8±0.08 (se) mm. Aspirin apparently had a protective association on PAL and it is hypothesised that low-dose aspirin may have reduced the rate of attachment loss.Conclusions: This hypothesis needs to be confirmed by a prospective study. The results of this study suggest that individuals aged over 50 years, particularly ex-smokers, may benefit by taking low-doses of aspirin daily to reduce their risk of periodontal attachment loss.

    Notes: Status epilepticus is a medical emergency that requires rapid and vigorous treatment to prevent neuronal damage and systemic complications. Failure to diagnose and treat status epilepticus accurately and effectively results in significant morbidity and mortality. Cerebral metabolic decompensation occurs after approximately 30 min of uncontrolled convulsive activity, and the window for treatment is therefore limited. Therapy should proceed simultaneously on four fronts: termination of seizures; prevention of seizure recurrence once status is controlled; management of precipitating causes of status epilepticus; management of the complications. This article reviews current opinions about the classification, aetiology and pathophysiology of adult generalised convulsive status epilepticus and details practical management strategies for treatment of this life-threatening condition.

    Notes: Point-of-care testing of coagulation parameters provides a more rapid assessment of test results compared with laboratory testing. A new coagulation monitor (GEM® PCL, Instrumentation Laboratory, Kirchheim, Germany) was evaluated. Point-of-care data for activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time (expressed as the international normalised ratio) and turn-around-time were compared. Coagulation parameters were compared in the blood of 57 patients with and without heparin therapy. The point-of-care and laboratory test results showed a bias (SD) of − 0.26 (4.55) s for activated partial thromboplastin time and − 0.011 (0.150) s for prothrombin time. The average turn-around-time was 3 min for point-of-care testing vs. 52 min for laboratory testing. We conclude that the reliability of point-of-care testing is sufficient for clinical use.

    Notes: In a Doppler reflectometry experiment the line of sight is chosen to be nonperpendicular with respect to the reflecting layer. This type of diagnostic is able to probe density perturbations with the wave number in the reflecting layer selected by the tilt angle. The propagation velocity of the perturbations is calculated from the Doppler shift of the returning microwave signal whereas its intensity contains information about the perturbation amplitude. The diagnostic capability of Doppler reflectometry is demonstrated at the W7-AS stellarator using an antenna system with variable tilt angle. The measured values of the propagation velocity of density perturbations and its radial dependence are in good agreement with the E×B velocity of the plasma obtained from spectroscopy. Transient states can be followed with a temporal resolution less than 50 μs. Therefore Doppler reflectometry allows one to test the interdependence of sheared flow and turbulence on that timescale. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A home-built spectrometer for solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with stochastic excitation is described. An overview of the instrument is given and selected components are explained in more detail. These are the control unit and the module for the pulse generation. Furthermore, a static probe with crossed coils for the transmitter and receiver circuits and the data processing part of the spectrometer software are described. The pulse unit can generate pulse trains with up to 219 pulses. Also, pulse-width-modulated sequences with automatic pulse centering can be produced. Using the crossed coil, probe decoupling between transmitter and receiver of more than 80 dB is possible. Several examples of NMR measurements are shown, which include selective excitation in solids and the acquisition of static 2H solid state NMR spectra with a spectral width of up to 185 kHz. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
