Notes: We suggested a simple method for obtaining the quantitative transition rate constants of trans–cis isomerization in the pseudo-stilbene-type of azobenzene molecule. The absorbances of the solution and film of a poly(malonic ester) containing disperse red 1(PDR1) were measured with the pumping beam intensity, and analyzed by the rate equation for the fractions of trans and cis conformers. The rate constants of PDR1 solution and film were successfully determined. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Growth of gallium oxide on n-GaN was realized in H2O by bias-assisted photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation using Al as a counterelectrode instead of a Pt commonly used in the PEC process. Although the growth of the oxide was not observed at below 2 V, the initial oxide growth rate of 8.7 nm/min was shown at a bias of 15 V and ultraviolet light intensity of 300 mW/cm2. However, the growth rate lowered and oxide thickness was saturated to 340 nm. The saturated oxide thickness and initial growth rate were increased with the applied bias. The homogeneous oxide growth and near stoichiometric composition of Ga2O3 were observed in Auger electron spectroscopy analysis results. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements on unintentionally doped n-type GaN epilayers show that, above room temperature, the Hall-mobility values of different samples vary parallel with each other with temperature. We demonstrate that this anomaly is mainly due to a conductive layer near the GaN/sapphire interface for thin samples with low carrier density. Through trapping electrons, threading edge dislocations (TEDs) debilitate the epilayer contribution in a two-layer mixed conduction model involving the epilayer and the near-interface layer. The trapping may, in part, explain low mobility and anomalous transport in pure GaN layers. Scattering by TEDs is important only at low temperatures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report two patients with severe palmar hyperhidrosis who responded to BOTOX® delivered not by injection, the usual method of delivery, but by iontophoresis. The Botulinum molecule has been considered too large for delivery into the skin this way. However, other large peptides, both non-ionic and cationic, have been delivered successfully by this method, so we suspected that BOTOX® could in fact be iontophoresed. Our saline-controlled treatment of these two patients with a small iontophoresis unit (Iomed Phoresor II) allowed small volumes of standard BOTOX® dilutions to be used, and demonstrates that iontophoresis can indeed deliver BOTOX® successfully. This has important therapeutic potential for the large number of patients with focal hyperhidrosis. They may be spared painful injections, and in more severe cases, invasive surgery.

Notes: Asian cultivated rice was domesticated from the wild rice, Oryza rufipogon and throughout the domestication process, a wide range of morphological and physiological changes altered the ancestral form. This study was conducted to identify the genetic basis of changes associated with the domestication process. An recombinant Inbred line (RIL) population consisting of 120 lines was developed from a cross between the Juponica cultivar.‘Hwayeongbyeo’and a presumed wild progenitor. O. rufipogon Griff. Acc.01944. The population was genotyped with 124 simple sequence length repeat (SSR) markers, providing an average interval size of 15 cM, and also evaluated for 20 traits related to domestication and agricultural performance. A total of 63 quantitative trait locus (QTLs) and one locus associated with qualitative variation for pericarp coloration were identified using single point and composite interval analysis. The number of QTLs per trait ranged from one to seven. Phenotypic variation associated with each QTL ranged from 3.7 to 40.4%. with an average of 15.3%. The results indicated that most domestication-related traits clustered in chromosomal blocks, and the positions of many of these clusters were consistent with those reported in previous studies and with skewed segregation ratios in these BC1,F7 RILs. For 13 (20.6%) of the QTLs identified in this study. the O. rufipogan -derived allele contributed a desirable agronomic effect despite the overall undesirable characteristics of the wild phenotype. Favourable alleles from O. rufipogan were detected for panicle length, spikelets per panicle, days to heading and leaf discoloration associated with cold stress. When compared with previous studies involving interspecific crosses, it can be concluded that O. rufipogon is useful as a source of valuable alleles for rice improvement and that many of the introgressed regions contain genes that have a favourable impact on phenotype in different genetic backgrounds and different environments.

Notes: We report a case of factitious panniculitis masquerading as florid pyoderma gangrenosum in a 35-year-old woman. At presentation, she had tender, ecchymotic plaques over the lower trunk and limbs, and several biopsies showed active lobular panniculitis. However, the extensive ulceration that ensued was clinically persuasive for pyoderma gangrenosum. We elected to treat the inflammatory element symptomatically with a range of topical and systemic medications including clobetasol propionate, tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, prednisolone, dapsone, cyclosporin A and mycophenolate mofetil, none of which effected an improvement. The possibility of a factitious aetiology had been suspected from the outset, and when signs of clinical depression emerged, antidepressant therapy was initiated and the ulcers were encased in fibreglass casts. Within a short period, healing commenced and slowly progressed with scar formation. In retrospect, we consider the diagnosis to have been factitious panniculitis on the basis of strong circumstantial evidence and the disparity between the histological and clinical features.

Notes: Congenital smooth muscle hamartoma (CSMH) with follicular spotted appearance is a rare clinical variant of CMSH in which patients have marked perifollicular papules in the patches. A linear distribution of CSMH is also extremely rare. We report a 16-year-old Korean girl with this uncommon form of CSMH who had linearly arranged, hyperpigmented lesions with follicular papules extending from the right flank to the right lower leg from birth. Pathological findings, including immunohistochemical stains, were consistent with smooth muscle hamartoma. To date, there are only four reports on this rare, follicular form and one report on the linear form of CSMH in the literature. This paper describes the first combined occurrence of follicular spotted lesions and linear arrangement in CSMH.
