Notizen: The light-induced decrease of the photoconductivity in deuterated amorphous silicon is a factor of 3 less even though the defect density increase is greater than in hydrogenated material having equivalent as-deposited properties. Consequent changes in the average recombination cross section of the defects is illustrated. Since the differences in the light soaking behavior upon isotopic substitution has been found to disappear in films deposited at low temperatures, the changes are thought to arise from differences in the silicon network occurring during growth.

Notizen: A gold neutral beam probe system was improved by adopting a multichannel ion detector and adding sweeping functions of beam energy, deflector voltage, and electrode voltage of the analyzer to the system to measure the fluctuations and time evolution of the two-dimensional space potentials with fast resolving time during one shot. Positions of the beam spot on the multichannel detector corresponding to the ionizing points of the beam in the plasma were simulated precisely as a function of the beam energy and the injection angle. A potential derivation formula was determined taking into consideration both the numerical and experimental results, and the reproducibility of the potential profile was checked. Two-dimensional potential profiles were measured in the optimization experiment of the microwave injection angles for formation of the plug potential. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A compact pinhole camera is found to be useful for observation of a spatial distribution of hot ions by imaging energetic charge-exchange neutral atoms. One can obtain images of neutral atoms and of x rays in the same geometry only by selecting filtering foils at the pinhole opening of a single camera. Easy comparison between the images associated with distributions of ions and electrons is quite beneficial for physical analyses of plasmas. The imaging technique is expected also to be useful to determine space–time-resolved energy spectra of hot ions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The background pressure dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of Co/Cu multilayer films and the effect of the Fe buffer layer were studied. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurement of the films and in situ quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) analysis in conjunction with background pressure dependence of MR ratio confirmed that the oxidation of Co/Cu gives a crucial influence to the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect. The oxidation of Co/Cu weakens the antiferromagnetic coupling, and results in the low MR ratio. The Fe buffer layer absorbs the residual oxygen, and this leads to the increase of the MR ratio. The MR ratio of (Co1 nm/Cu1 nm)100/Fe2.5 nm film deposited under low background pressure and high deposition rate so as to suppress oxidation reached over 80% at RT and 160% at 2 K.

Notizen: Soft materials have long been sought after for use in devices such as actuators, artificial muscles, separators, switches, sensors, memories, and so forth. We developed a soft, optically transparent material using polymer gels that can not only be activated by visible light (switched on) but also deactivated (switched off) by altering the local environment using three different means: pH, temperature, and light. This copolymer gel is a covalently cross-linked network of N-isopropylacrylamide, sodium acrylate, and a chromophore, which is found to undergo phase transitions exhibiting large hysteresis in the degree of swelling in response to pH, temperature, and light. In each system, between the transitions for swelling and shrinking, the gel can show either a swollen or a collapsed state, which can be selected according to the history of the variables. It has been established that a thermoresponsive gel with chromophore exhibits a local volume phase transition upon illumination with visible light. By making use of this phenomenon, we have successfully controlled the phase in which a gel exists with visible light: Without light illumination the gel stays in the swollen state. Upon illumination beyond a threshold intensity, however, a volume transition is locally induced, thereby forming a material in which both phases coexist stably for at least several hours after the light source has been removed. The phenomenological stability of the material in the coexistence state is discussed on the basis of the Landau theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) in the pump-probe detuning region of more than 1 THz has been observed in an InGaAsP multiple quantum well laser for the first time. Each of the probe and signal frequencies is closed to cavity resonance modes for the pump laser and those outputs are enhanced. The highly NDFWM process is based on a mechanism whose response time is less than 0.2 ps.

Notizen: Photoconductive and stable hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films, prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a Xe-silane mixture at a substrate temperature of 250 °C, did not show any photo-induced degradation of the photoconductivity after 104 min light soaking (air mass-1, 100 mW/cm2). The network structure of these films is inhomogeneous and includes a large amount of clustered hydrogen as indicated by the low-temperature thermal effusion and the large, broad component in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum.

Notizen: The relation between giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and the substrate temperature was investigated in sputtered Co/Cu multilayers. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is increased as the substrate temperature is decreased. The increase in the MR ratio is considered to be caused by the improvement in the sharpness of interfaces as concluded from the satellite peak intensity of the x-ray diffraction. The rough interfaces reduce the antiferromagnetic coupled areas and result in the MR ratio decrease. By lowering the substrate temperature to 20 °C, the MR ratio of 80% at room temperature was obtained.

Notizen: Growth of ZnSe/MgS strained-layer superlattices (SLSs) has been carried out by molecular beam epitaxy. The crystal quality of SLSs degraded with MgS thickness of more than about 3 monolayers. Photoluminescence due to the transition between quantized levels was observed. Photoluminescence peak energies higher than 3.0 eV at 77 K were observed, which are comparable to that of ZnMgSSe quaternary material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Equilibrium diameter and stress change of cylindrical N-isopropylacrylamide gels of submillimeter diameter were measured as a function of temperature under mechanical constraint along the uniaxial direction. As a result, the transition temperature increased up to 1 °C with increasing the strain, which indicates the possibility of the uniaxial strain-induced phase transition of gels at selected temperatures. The diameter and stress change were quite successfully described by the phenomenological model on the basis of the extended Flory-type free energy. The time course of the change in diameter and stress was also studied after the large steplike elongation was rapidly applied. A gradual increase in diameter during decrease in stress was detected clearly in the swollen phase, which is due to the relaxation of polymer segmental units to approach the favored conformation under the strong deformation. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.
