Notes: Organic–inorganic ultraviolet (UV) active hybrid materials have been prepared by a sol-gel process from benzophenone derivatives and tetraethylorthosilicate. The silica particles are spherical in shape and have a narrow size distribution which remains unchanged up to organic chromophore concentrations of 0.2 mmol g−1. At higher concentrations the spheres become less regular and fuse. A dependence of the material absorption properties on the particle size (at the same organic chromophore concentration) and on the concentration of surface grafted chromophores was noted. The most effective UV filter materials were found in a combination of silica incorporated chromophores and surface grafted chromophores at an overall low chromophore concentration. A comparison of the photostability of chromophores at standardized UV irradiation revealed an increase in stability for silica incorporated and surface immobilized benzophenone compared to benzophenone in a homogeneous solution.

Notes: The method of spin-dependent absorption has been used to examine the temperature dependence of the circular magnetic x-ray dichroism (CMXD) of the (disordered) Invar alloy fcc Fe72Pt28. At the Fe K edge the difference of the transmission for the reversed magnetization direction was determined with an accuracy of 10−5. By comparing the dichroic effects at 110 and at 410 K evidence was found for a temperature-dependent change of the magnetic absorption profile different from the pure amplitude reduction due to the reduced magnetization. It indicates a change of the spin splitting in the low-lying unoccupied p states. The polarization-averaged absorption spectrum shows also a small variation between 4 and 11 eV above the threshold indicating that the p-like electron density drops when the sample is heated. The experimental CMXD profiles are compared with spin-polarized band-structure calculations for ordered Fe3Pt and discussed within the frame of the model of high-spin–low-spin transitions in the Invar regime.

Notes: We report the results of a pulsed organometallic beam epitaxy (POMBE) process for growing complex oxide films at low background gas pressure (10−4–10−2 Torr) and low substrate temperature (600–680 °C) using organometallic precursors in an oxygen plasma environment. Our results show that POMBE can extend the capability of organometallic chemical vapor deposition to growing complex oxide films with high precision both in composition and structure without the need for post-deposition oxidation and heat treatments. The growth of phase-pure, highly oriented Y-Ba-Cu-O superconducting oxide films {[Tc (R=0)=90.5 K] and Jc (77 K, 50 K gauss)=1.1×105 A/cm2} is given as an example. Similar to the pulsed laser deposition process, the POMBE method has the potential for in situ processing of multilayer structures (e.g., junctions).

Notes: Epitaxial Ag(111) films have been grown on mica. They exhibit flat terraces of a few 100 nm diameter, suitable for nanoscale modification with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Under ambient conditions, surface modifications of a few nanometers diameter were produced by raising the bias from below 1 V to a bias between 3 and 7 V for less than 50 ns. The steady-state current could be limited to 2 pA. This means that the modification is initiated while only a few electrons pass the tunneling junction, indicating that it is not a current effect. At positive sample bias, usually holes are formed, while at negative bias hillocks occur. In the case of hole formation, the current does not change significantly on a time scale of 10 μs. When hillocks are formed, the current may rise after the application of the voltage pulse. It was limited to 4 nA by the external circuitry and remains saturated until the tip is withdrawn on a time scale of milliseconds, i.e., the characteristic for the feedback loop control. Also in this case the modification is not caused by a current effect, since the limiting current would still allow nondestructive STM imaging. It is concluded that the modifications are caused by field evaporation of sample and tip material, respectively.

Notes: The properties of quantum fields generating local nets of von Neumann algebras are discussed. For fields that satisfy certain energy bounds, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such a net and for the existence of product states are given in terms of the vacuum expectation values.

Notes: UHV IR emission spectroscopy has been carried out at energies 9–33 mRy (wavelength 2.8–9.8 μm) in the temperature range 430–800 K on single crystals of FeNi and FePt Invar, with Curie temperatures in the respective range. The results show a drastic (up to 30%) decrease of the IR absorptivity around Tc in the energy range 23–33 mRy (2.8–4 μm), while at small energies around 9 mRy (10 μm) the absorptivity is temperature independent, as expected for 3d metals, and found on pure Ni. The decrease in absorptivity on the Invar alloys cannot be understood by the common temperature dependence of interband transitions; rather, it calls for the existence of moment-volume instabilities, characterized by transitions between a high-spin ground state and a temperature-induced low-spin state. Qualitative agreement of the absorptivity with respective total density-of-states calculations on Fe3Ni is demonstrated.
