Notes: Critical current densities Jc were measured in as-deposited, c-axis-oriented Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox thin films with Tc values as high as 97 K, which were prepared by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition. These films showed high Jc ((approximately-greater-than)109 A/m2) at 77.3 K in high magnetic fields (≥1 T, H(parallel)a-b plane). The best values are 3.3×109 A/m2 at 1 T and 9.1×108 A/m2 at 8 T, which are the highest Jc for Bi-oxide thin films among those reported so far. There were no signs of weak links in the Jc(H) behavior, and the surface morphology examined by scanning electron microscopy showed no apparent grain boundaries. The values of Jc decreased sharply when the applied field deviated from the a-b plane, and went to zero at the angles where the field component in the c direction is nearly equal to the irreversibility field Hc2* parallel to the c axis. The angular dependence of Jc of these films is most reasonably explained by the theory of intrinsic pinning.

Notes: An anisotropy for threshold current densities for AlGaInP laser diodes with CuPt-type natural superlattice (NSL) in a Ga0.5In0.5P active layer, grown on a (001) GaAs substrate, was observed, for the first time. Threshold current densities (Jth) for laser diodes with stripes in the [1¯10] and [110] direction were 1.35 and 2.10 kA/cm2, respectively. The lasers with a weak NSL formation in the active layer showed a very small anisotropy in Jth. Stripe direction dependence of electroluminescence (EL) polarization properties were also observed for lasers with well-developed NSL. The anisotropies in Jth and EL polarization properties are attributed to the existence of the NSL in the active layer and the appearance asymmetry previously observed in the NSL.

Notes: summary  The purpose of this study is to clinically confirm the adhesive effect of a vinyl-thiol primer (V-Primer) for precious alloys. Further, we examined the failure of resin-bonded bridges (RBBs) in order to improve the clinical longevity of RBBs, and to analyse the causes of failure. Twenty-six RBBs were bonded with V-primer and Super Bond C & B between May 1987 and December 1997 in the Dental Clinic of the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido. The RBBs were made of silver–palladium–gold alloy or metal–ceramic gold alloys. V-primer was effective in bonding Super Bond C & B to the RBBs made of silver–palladium–gold alloys. Ten prostheses had functioned satisfactorily for 8–11 years. However, six of the 26 RBBs had become detached. In four of the six failed RBBs, the type of bond failure was a mixture fracture in the resin–enamel interface. Our results suggest that: (1) V-primer is effective on RBBs made of silver–palladium–gold alloys. (2) Mechanical retention is necessary for retainers to improve the longevity of RBBs when the V-primer is applied to RBBs made of precious alloys without copper. (3) The RBB should not be applied to abutment teeth that have differences in tooth mobility.

Notes: Several studies have been reported on the effects of various therapeutic agents in enhancing or suppressing the carcinogenic activity of N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). However, it is still unknown whether a mucosal protective agent could suppress its carcinogenic activity.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Twenty-five Wistar male rats were divided into four groups: group 1, MNNG alone; group 2, MNNG + tetraprenylacetone; group 3, control; group 4, tetraprenylacetone alone. MNNG 100 mg/mL was freely given to groups 1 and 2, and tetraprenylacetone (200 mg/kg intraperitoneal) was additionally administered every other day to the rats in groups 2 and 4. The animals were sacrificed at 10 weeks and the gastric mucosa examined.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Atrophic changes were observed in the antrum after 8 weeks of oral administration of MNNG. Furthermore, using immunohistological analysis with 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU), the proliferative zone was found to be enlarged and shifted upward, although the BrdU labelling index of the proliferative zone was unaltered. Intraperitoneal administration of tetraprenylacetone every other day suppressed the MNNG-induced atrophic change and the alterations proliferative markers. Tetraprenylacetone alone did not have an effect either on morphological or proliferative markers.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:These observations suggest that gastric mucosal defensive factors may play critical roles in suppressing atrophic change inducing carcinogenesis by an exogenic carcinogen.

Notes: The Km values of 5′-nucleotidase against IMP markedly increased below 6°C in the case of 32°C-acclimated carp muscle microsomes. This caused a break point at 6°C in the Arrhenius plot of 5′-nucleotidase activity against IMP at a low concentration. The discontinuity of temperature dependency was not found when a surfactant had been introduced. Muscle microsomes of carp acclimated at 32°C contained much more cholesterol and saturated fatty acid than those of 10°C-acclimated carp. Therefore, the difference of lipid composition seemed to be closely related to the change in kinetics of microsomal 5′-nucleotidase.

Notes: The c-erbB-2 proto-oncogene encodes a transmembrane protein which is highly homologous to epidermal growth factor receptor. Overexpression of this c-erbB-2 protein has been reported in many human carcinomas, including breast carcinoma. However, there have been few studies of the expression of c-erbB-2 in cholangiocarcinoma and hepatolithiasis, a condition occasionally associated with cholangiocarcinoma.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and resultsIn this study, we evaluated immunoreactivity for the c-erbB-2 protein in human cholangiocarcinomas (n = 47), hepatolithiasis (n = 20), fetal livers (n = 36) and normal adult livers (n = 6). In normal adult livers and fetal livers, expression of c-erbB-2 protein could not be detected in hepatocytes or intrahepatic biliary cells. In hepatolithiasis, there was overexpression of c-erbB-2 in 15/20 (75%). The expression was found with a membranous pattern on the proliferated intrahepatic bile ducts and proliferated intrahepatic peribiliary glands around the bile ducts containing stones. Hepatocytes were negative for c-erbB-2 protein. Moreover, the biliary cell expression of the c-erbB-2 protein correlated significantly with Ki67 labelling index. On the other hand, aberrant expression of c-erbB-2 was found in 33/47 (70%) cholangiocarcinomas. The c-erbB-2 expression in cholangiocarcinomas did not correlate with Ki67 labelling index or p53 expression.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThese results indicate that aberrant expression of c-erbB-2 protein is found in cholangiocarcinoma and also in noncancerous biliary proliferative lesions such as hepatolithiasis. These findings also suggest that c-erbB-2 oncogene participates not only in cholangiocarcinogenesis but also in biliary cell proliferation in non-neoplastic conditions.

Notes: Abstract  We report an autopsy case of mixed ductal-endocrine carcinoma of the pancreas presenting as gastrinoma with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. A 38-year-old Japanese male was found to have Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and pancreatic gastrinoma, and gastrectomy and resection of the pancreatic tumor were performed. However, hypergastrinemia persisted, and the patient died of disseminated carcinomatosis at 62 years of age, 24 years after the onset of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. At autopsy, the main tumor was present in the residual pancreas, and metastases were noted in many organs. In the pancreas and other organs, ductal and endocrine carcinoma areas were mixed and there was a gradual transition between the two. No acinar differentiation was noted. The ductal elements were positive for mucins and carcinoembryonic antigen but negative for neuroendocrine markers, while endocrine elements were positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin and to a lesser extent for gastrin, but negative for mucins and carcinoembryonic antigen. The ductal elements comprised about 30% of the tumor cells, and endocrine elements 70%. According to the revised World Health Organization classification, our case was diagnosed as mixed ductal-endocrine carcinoma. Our case is rare because the tumor manifested as gastrinoma with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and the patient survived for 24 years. To the best of our knowledge, no such case has been reported. Our case suggests that pancreatic endocrine tumors may evolve into mixed ductal-endocrine carcinomas.

Notes: Abstract Multifocal small low-signal lesions on T2*-weighted gradient-echo (GE) MRI are reported to be common in the brain of hypertensive patients. We examined factors associated with these lesions. For one year, we routinely obtained T2*-weighted GE images (TR 1000 TE 30 ms, flip angle = 20 °) in all adult patients (314) who underwent brain MRI in our hospital, using a 1.5 T superconducting magnet. Patients with multifocal small low-signal lesions with a known or presumed pathogenesis or any condition which may cause intracerebral haemorrhage, such as brain tumours, were excluded from further analysis. Thus, 191 cases remained (104 men and 87 women; age, 62.8 ± 11.0 years, range, 30–89 years). The overall prevalence of multifocal small low-signal lesions on the GE images was 15.2 % (29/191); they were commonly in the cerebral white matter and basal ganglia. They were detected in 12 (52.2 %) of the 23 patients with prior symptomatic brain hemorrhage, 12 (20.7 %) of the 58 with prior symptomatic infarcts, and only five (4.5 %) of 110 without a prior stroke. Logistic regression analysis indicated that multifocal small low-signal lesions were significantly correlated with a symptomatic acute brain haemorrhage (odds ratio, 13.17), chronic hypertension (4.00) and a symptomatic acute infarct (3.71). The association with symptomatic acute brain haemorrhage suggests that this finding may represent subclinical microhaemorrhage. The diagnostic potential of this finding to identify individuals at risk of symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage may require further investigation.
