    Notes: X-ray reflectivity measurements were made on Si(001) crystals containing a delta-doping layer of Sb atoms a few nanometers below the surface. The measurements show the Sb doping profile to be abrupt towards the substrate side of the sample and to decay towards the surface with a characteristic decay length of 1.01 nm.

    Notes: Single crystals of [Fe(mesitylene)2+2][C3(C(CN)2)−3]2 exhibit an intense EPR spectrum with anisotropy and fine structure typical of an electronic triplet species (S=1). From measurements of the fine-structure splitting as a function of angle in three orthogonal crystal planes, it has been established that the spin–spin interaction tensor is nearly axial, D=(−218, 116, 105 MHz), and that the g tensor is almost isotropic with giso =2.0027. The zero-field splitting parameters were determined as ||D||=327.8 MHz (117 G) and ||E||=5.7 MHz (2 G). Comparison of the principal directions of D with vectors within the known crystal structure shows that the triplet comprises a radical pair formed between nearest neighboring anions. The principal values and directions of D for the biradical compare well with those calculated for the unpaired spin density distribution deduced for the monoradical from its isotropic spectrum and from INDO calculations.

    Notes: Abstract. A large soil block was constructed to determine the importance of preferential flow routes compared with matric flow pathways at a pasture site in mid-Devon. The sandy loam soil was well structured and uniform. The soil block measured 5 m×3 m×1 m and was instrumented with an array of 54 tensiometers, TDR wave guides and suction samplers connected to an in situ chloride analysis system. Four steady state irrigation experiments were conducted with a range of rainfall intensities. During each experiment chloride and nitrate tracers were applied and the patterns of movement were observed. Although the application of tracer was uniform and the soil was relatively homogeneous, there was large variability across the block in terms of time taken to reach the peak concentration (TPC) and the peak concentration itself. About 44 samplers operated at the greatest intensities (10–2 mm h−1) and only 35 at the smallest (1 mm h−1). No relationship was found between TPC and depth. The fastest TPC and largest concentrations were associated with the greatest rainfall intensities. Relative importance of the individual water pathways was a function of soil heterogeneity: parts of the soil block were highly active with several pathways having short TPCs and conductivities in excess of 4 m day−1 whereas other areas had longer TPCs and conductivities of 1–2 m day−1. The pattern was also dynamic, with conductivities of the pathways changing through time, though most of the faster pathways maintained their greater conductivities for more than one year.

    Notes: Abstract. Boreholes have been constructed at eight sites on the Permo-Triassic Sandstone and Chalk aquifers to assess the extent of chemical and microbiological contamination emanating from unlined farm manure stores. Slurry along fracture faces in the Chalk was found on cores taken from beneath two stores. Porewaters from the Chalk sites and one of the Sandstone sites were discoloured and showed high concentrations of nitrate, ammonium and organic carbon to depths in excess of 10 m. Although Cryptosporidia and Escherichia coli O157 were found in many of the cattle slurry lagoons, neither were found in the aquifer material beneath. The self-sealing of unlined slurry stores is seen as a crucial step in minimizing leakage. A simple mass balance shows farm boreholes near to contaminant sources are at greater risk than public supply wells. Contaminant modelling shows discontinuing use of an unlined farm manure store will lead to little difference in solute concentrations over the short to medium term. Groundwater is most at risk where the water table is shallow since direct hydraulic connection between the lagoon base and the water table considerably increases the rate of vertical migration. This is of greatest significance for pathogens that are thought to be relatively short lived in the subsurface. Under the majority of situations minimal threat is posed to potable groundwater drinking supplies.

    Notes: Abstract The dry matter (DM) production of Trifolium repens, T. ambiguum and the backcross 1 (BC1) and backcross 2 (BC2) hybrids with T. repens as the recurrent parent were compared in mixtures with an intermediate heading variety of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) under a cutting-only management over 3 harvest years. Plots of parental legume species and backcross hybrids were established from small plantlets and oversown with the companion grass. In the first harvest year, the DM yield of clover in T. repens plots was greater than that in the BC2 plots and both greater than in the BC1 plots, whilst in the second and third harvest years differences between the DM yield of clover in the T. repens and the BC1 and BC2 hybrid plots were small. Similar results were obtained for the DM yield of total herbage. There were also differences in seasonal growth in the first harvest year, when yield of clover in T. repens plots was greater than in the BC1 and BC2 hybrid plots at early cuts but not at later cuts. Few differences in seasonal growth were observed between parental species and hybrids in subsequent harvest years. Comparison of above- and below-ground biomass showed more DM in roots and rhizome of clover in the backcrosses than in the T. repens plots in the second harvest year but differences were less evident in the third harvest year. The clover in the backcross hybrid plots also had fewer stolon growing points per quadrat than the T. repens plots, but the BC2 had more than the BC1 plots. The exploitation of these hybrids in breeding programmes as a strategy to improve the persistence and drought tolerance of white clover is discussed and implications for forage production considered.

    Notes: We report a case of systemic lupus erythematosus associated with C1q deficiency. Our patient presented at the age of 6 years with cutaneous lupus. She later developed Raynaud’s phenomenon, non-scarring alopecia, oral ulceration and grand mal seizures due to cerebral vasculitis. Complement C3 and C4 levels were consistently normal during flares of her lupus and haemolytic activity of her complement was absent, suggesting a deficiency of an early component of the complement cascade. No C1q could be detected.

    Notes: Rotary forging has been used to produce high-density bonded magnets from rapidly quenched Nd-Fe-B based ribbons [MQP-D, of nominal composition 28%Nd-56%Fe-15%Co-1%B (wt %)]. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), when used as an additive (5%–15% by volume) has been found to act as an effective binder and greatly enhances the forgeability of the MQI, allowing higher forging pressures to be used. Densities of up to 98% of the fully dense composite have been achieved. The forging process can be undertaken in air at room temperature. Magnetically, the compacts are comparable to conventional epoxy resin bonded MQI, with energy products of up to 84 kJ/m3. Equivalent volume fractions of MQI (∼83.5 vol %) have been achieved in the compacts with increased PTFE content due to the displacement of pores by the PTFE. The effect of PTFE content on the mechanical strength of the compacts has been assessed and it has been found that strength increases with increasing PTFE content, consistent with the reduction in porosity.

    Notes: Transport of the acceptor-passivating hydrogen species in p-type GaAs has been observed in reverse bias annealed Al Schottky diode samples. The motion of the positively charged hydrogen across the depletion region of these diodes is confirmed both by changes in the electrically active acceptor profiles with time, and by direct measurement of the migration using secondary-ion mass spectrometry on deuterated samples. Acceptor passivation is unstable under minority-carrier injection by illumination at 25 °C. Hydrogen injection into p-type GaAs during boiling in water or etching in H2SO4:H2O2:H2O has also been demonstrated.

    Notes: Electroabsorption of strained-layer Inx Ga1−x As/GaAs superlattice structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates was experimentally investigated. Its spectral characteristics were found to be similar to those of Franz–Keldysh electroabsorption of bulk semiconductor materials, and suggest that the widths of ground-state electron and hole minibands might be larger than the maximum tilt of the potential well caused by an applied voltage. We attribute the electroabsorption of such superlattices to photon-assisted tunneling between ground-state electron and heavy hole minibands.
