    Notes: Laser spectroscopy, i.e., resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI), IR/R2PI ion depletion and hole burning spectroscopy have been applied in an experimental study of heterogenous clusters consisting of fluorobenzene (FB) or p-difluorobenzene (pDFB), respectively, microsolvated by up to three methanol molecules. Their infrared ion depletion spectra were taken in the region of the OH and CH stretches of methanol. In these complexes the methanol molecules form subclusters, which are weakly hydrogen bonded to either the aromatic π-system (πOH) or to the fluorine substituent (σF) and a CH group (σCH). In FB⋅(MeOH)1, pDFB⋅(MeOH)1, pDFB⋅(MeOH)2 and one isomer of FB⋅(MeOH)2 the methanol subunits exclusively exhibit σF and σCH H-bonds. A further isomer of FB⋅(MeOH)2 exhibits a πOH type interaction. For FB⋅(MeOH)3 and pDFB⋅(MeOH)3 (1:3) complexes the methanol subcluster may take on either a chainlike or a ringlike conformation. In the chainlike isomer of FB⋅(MeOH)3 the methanol trimer interacts with the chromophore via a πOH H-bond while with the corresponding pDFB cluster a σF H-bond is formed. High level ab initio calculations, still feasible for molecular clusters of this size, have also been carried out to supplement the experimental investigations. These calculations include complete geometry optimizations of FB⋅(MeOH)n (n=1–2) and pDFB⋅(MeOH)1 at the MP2/6-31+G* and B3LYP/6-31+G* levels of theory. The minimum energy structures of the microsolvates together with their harmonic vibrational spectra allow a reliable assignment of the experimentally observed spectra and the determination of structure of the complexes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This combined experimental and computational study is aimed at elucidating the structure and reactivity of heterogeneous molecular clusters. We report results for the system para-chlorofluorobenzene/methanol (pClFB/MeOH). Particularly, three different van der Waals (vdW) isomers of the neutral (1:1) aggregate (π,σF,σCl) have been assigned by comparison of experimental infrared frequencies in the O–H and C–H stretch regions measured by IR/R2PI depletion spectroscopy with calculated frequencies at MP2/6-31+G(d) and B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level. The isomers are weakly hydrogen-bonded complexes with methanol's OH group coordinated toward the aromatic π-electron cloud, the fluorine or the chlorine substituent, respectively. This assignment is corroborated by the UV and IR spectra of the corresponding monosubstituted benzene/methanol complexes. After resonant photoionization of pClFB⋅(MeOH)n, for n=1 besides vdW fragmentation, no chemical reactivity was observed for any isomer. The investigation of aggregates with n≥5 indicated a substitution reaction taking place to produce chloroanisole+, emphasizing the importance of neutral precursor cluster size over cluster structure for intracluster ion–molecule reactions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Supersonic molecular beams of D2, CH4, NH3, and C2H4 are investigated in the expansion region employing collinear coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). The analysis of rotationally resolved CARS spectra allows the determination of temperatures in the beam. The rotational relaxation as a function of stagnation pressure and separation from the nozzle is studied by recording theQ branch for D2 and the ν3 R andS branches for CH4. Rotational temperatures for NH3 are determined by investigating the complete ν3 band. At strong stagnation conditions broad structures arise which can be attributed to the formation of NH3 clusters. For C2H4 the ν5 band with resolved rotational structure is reported. Again, at larger distances from the nozzle, broad structures are observed. They are assigned to the ν1 and ν5 vibrations in the C2H4 cluster.

    Notes: Abstract Histamine, among various “biologic-physiologic” abnormalities, is considered as a pathogenetic factor in chronic duodenal ulcer disease. The 10–30 per cent difference between its concentration in gastric and duodenal mucosa of patients compared to healthy controls, however, has to be demonstrated to be specific for the disease. It has to be shown to be neither a methodological artefact nor a common effect, concomitant factor or consequence. This study, after a series of pathogenetic trials examines systematic errors (biases) in the fluorometric-fluoroenzymatic histamine assay under the conditions of field studies including tests on specificity over a time period of 10 years. It concentrates on sensitivity (detection limits) and specificity of a standard technique described herein. A modified Shore procedure for large scale assays in human biopsies was developed including reference luminescence values for all reagents, cleaning material and glassware, reduction of OPD concentration to 0.05%, purification ofn-heptan, omission of centrifugation steps in the extraction procedure and use of 2 ml 1M HClO4 in the homogenization step to prevent losses of histamine due to adherence to the mechanical homogenizer. This assay was sensitive enough to measure histamine without difficulty in any biopsy taken. The detection limit was 3 ng/biopsy, but the smallest quantities of the amine ever obtained were 10.6 and 18.3 ng/biopsy (depending on both histamine content and biopsy weight). A series of problems had to be solved both in achieving and demonstrating specificity. It had to be defined not only for the assay in general, but also for assessing the difference in histamine content between ulcer patients and healthy controls. Exogenous more than endogenous fluorescing material interfering with the determination had to be excluded. A series of pitfalls were detected which had to be overcome in demonstrating the specificity of the assay by physicochemical and enzymatic tests. The specificity of the identification tests was more often impaired than the histmine assay itself. Fluorescing material interfering with the assay occurred in the homogenization, extraction and condensation steps, was found in water, OPD, the organic solvents, the cleaning material and in all kinds of plastic vessels. Plasticizers were shown by physicochemical characteristics including fluorescence spectra to be most likely responsible for this interfering material. Rules were developed to exclude such hazards in specificity in longterm pathobiochemical studies.

    Notes: Abstract After an i.v. application of 100 mg tramadol in 13 healthy volunteers (1) no change in plasma histamine concentration could be detected, (2) systemic anaphylactoid reactions did not occur, (3) cutaneous reactions were not rated as anaphylactoid since itching and erythema were seen only once after tramadol whereas erythema was also observed twice after saline, (4) blood pressure and heart rate were only very slightly and transiently elevated without any abnormalities in ECG-readings and (5) only side effects typical for opioid therapy were observed.

    Notes: Summary ¶ We report about 50 patients with spontaneous intracerebral haematomas (ICH) caused by intracranial neoplasms to assess the underlying histological condition, their presentation on admission, diagnostic work-up, treatment, histological diagnosis, and clinical outcome. These patients were identified in a prospective series of 2041 patients with intracranial neoplasms and 692 patients with spontaneous ICH, which were both consecutively collected over a nine-year-period.  The frequency of ICH in patients with intracranial neoplasms was 2.4%. The frequency of tumour related ICH in the ICH group was 7.2%. The leading cause of tumour related ICH were metastases of extracranial origin (n=18; 36%), followed by glioblastoma multiforme (n=15; 30%). Nine patients (18%) had benign primary intracranial neoplasms. On admission 18 patients were somnolent (36%) and 14 patients (28%) were comatose. In 29 cases (58%) ICH was the first clinical sign of neoplastic disease, while in 21 patients (42%) a malignant tumour was already known. We operated on 45 patients (90%), four patients (8%) were not operated on because of poor clinical condition and died, one patient refused surgical treatment. Six patients (12%) died despite surgery.  This series confirms the importance of a proper neuroradiological and clinical work-up of patients with suspected tumour related ICH followed by operative treatment and histological confirmation of the diagnosis. This is supported by the fact that 18% of patients had prognostically favourable intracranial tumours which would not otherwise have been adequately treated.

    Notes: Abstract. Mycotic pseudoaneurysm of the aorta is a rare disease in childhood. We report on two cases which were diagnosed in an unselected general pediatric population within an 8-month period. The first case was a 16-month-old toddler with a normal cardiac history who presented with purulent pericarditis due to group A steptococcus and subsequent pseudoaneurysm formation of the ascending aorta while convalescing from varicella infection. The second case was a 14-year-old girl with a previously undiagnosed coarctation of the aorta who developed a Staphylococcus aureus aortitis in the dilatated poststenotic segment with pseudoaneurysm formation and infiltration into the adjacent lung tissue. In both cases parenteral antibiotic therapy was administered over 10 and 4 days, respectively, followed by emergency surgery consisting of aneurysmectomy, coarctectomy (case 2), and in situ homograft implantation. Recovery was uneventful. In both cases early institution of a femorofemoral cardiopulmonary bypass prevented a fatal outcome despite intraoperative rupture of the pseudoaneurysm.

    Notes: Abstract  Between 1991 and 1998, 24 patients underwent surgery for a craniopharyngioma in our department. This group included two patients who had tumors with extensive growth along the midline, and along the posterior fossa in particular. In both cases suprasellar calcifications were typical features on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). A 7-year-old boy presented with a 6-month history of headache, nausea, and progressive unilateral hearing loss. With a suboccipital approach it was possible to remove the main part of the tumor. In a 13-year-old boy headache and visual deterioration led to the diagnosis of a craniopharyngioma, which was removed with a pterional approach. For the neuroimaging work-up in such cases of atypically growing craniopharyngiomas MRI is the method of choice. Additional CT scanning is recommended, which provides valuable information about bony changes at the skull base due to space-occupying growth. CT substantiates the differential diagnosis if typical calcifications are seen.
