Notes: Epitaxial films of Y-Ba-Cu-O were obtained on a Si substrate, using an epitaxial intermediate layer consisting of BaTiO3(or SrTiO3)/MgAl2O4. MgAl2O4 was epitaxially grown on the Si(100) substrate by chemical vapor deposition. Then, SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 was also epitaxially grown on the MgAl2O4 layer by means of rf magnetron sputtering. Epitaxial Y-Ba-Cu-O films were prepared on BaTiO3(SrTiO3)/MgAl2O4/Si substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. Preparation of an Y-Ba-Cu-O film directly on MgAl2O4/Si was also studied, but only a randomly oriented polycrystalline film has been obtained so far. Resistive superconducting transitions with zero resistance at 65 K on SrTiO3/MgAl2O4/Si and at 70 K on BaTiO3/MgAl2O4/Si were observed.

Notes: As-deposited superconducting thin films (∼0.1 μm) of YBa2Cu3O7−x have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (100) Si with buffer layers of BaTiO3/MgAl2O4. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the films grow epitaxially with the c axis preferentially oriented normal to the substrate surface. This is confirmed by ion channeling measurements along the (100) (normal to the surface) and (110) directions of the Si substrate showing a minimum yield of 54% along the (100), and 78% along the (110) axes using 2.8 MeV He++. Preliminary transmission electron microscopy study also supports these results. The as-deposited films have zero resistance temperatures of 86–87 K, and critical current densities of 6×104 A/cm2 at 77 K and 1.2×105 A/cm2 at 73 K. Our results indicate that the superconducting properties of the films are limited primarily by the quality and degree of epitaxal growth of the buffer layers on the silicon substrate.

Notes: The flow of excitation energy from the antennae to photosynthetic reaction centre complexes at 77 K was studied in leaves of two evergreen species, namely, snow gum (Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng.) and a hemiparasitic mistletoe (Amyema miquelii, Lehm. ex Miq.). The leaves that were naturally acclimated to winter conditions of freezing temperatures and high irradiance displayed the recently discovered cold-hard-band or CHB feature of the chlorophyll a fluorescence spectra (Gilmore & Ball, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 97:11098–11101, 2000). A streak-camera-spectrograph was used and the double convolution integral method for global analysis was applied to simultaneously acquire and simulate, respectively, the time- and wavelength-dependence of all major chlorophyll a components (Gilmore et al. Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. B-London 355:1371–1384, 2000). The CHB coincided with changed amplitudes and decreased excited state lifetimes for the main F685 nm and F695 nm emission bands from the photosystem II (PSII) core-inner-antenna. The CHB dissipates energy as heat separate from PSII while also reducing the PSII quantum yield by competing for both photon absorption and antenna excitation. The CHB did not correlate with changes in the decay kinetics of the PSI antenna F740 nm band. The spectral-kinetic features of the altered energy flow were similar in the unrelated evergreen species. These results are consistent with a functional association between the CHB, PSII energy dissipation and protective storage of chlorophyll in overwintering evergreens.

Notes: Summary Of 32 guinea pigs (Hartley and strain 13), 20 were immunised with whole muscle homogenate, microsome or myosin B fraction of rabbit skeletal muscle with Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA); the purified myosin fraction was also used as an antigen in four animals at a concentration lower than other antigens; four were injected with normal saline and FCA; other four had no injection. Five histological changes, namely necrosis, phagocytosis, central nuclei, inflammation and vacuoles, in the quadriceps femoris muscle were compared by quantitative analysis. The group immunised with myosin B fraction showed necrosis, phagocytosis and inflammation more frequently than those immunised with other preparations (p〈0.05). The changes were more frequent in the strain 13 than in Hartley (p〈0.05).

Notes: Summary The quadriceps femoris muscles of experimental allergic myositis, in strain 13 guinea pigs immunised with rabbit myosin B fraction, were subjected to histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies. They demonstrated a variety of degenerative changes of muscle fibres, infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages along with deposition of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and complement factor 3 on the surface of the muscle fibres. One third of the infiltrating cells were macrophages with acid phosphatase activity in the cytoplasm. The serum IgG of the model had an affinity for the surface of normal guinea pig muscle fibres and for thick filaments and other organelles. Its affinity for the heavy and light chains of myosin, actin, troponin T and for other proteins was shown by the immunoblotting method combined with one- and two-dimensional electrophoreses.

Notes: Summary Ultracytochemical localizations of cyclic nucleotide-metabolizing enzymes, namely adenylate cyclase (AC), guanylate cyclase (GC) and cyclic 3′,5′-nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE), have been demonstrated in the human term placenta. AC activity was found positive on the basal plasma membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast and on the pinocytotic vesicle of the fetal capillary endothelial cell. GC activity was observed to be strong on the plasma membrane of the microvilli of the syncytiotrophoblast. The cAMP PDE activity was shown positive both on the basal plasma membrane and on the microvillous membrane, while cGMP PDE activity was exclusively confined to the microvilli of the syncytiotrophoblast. These observations suggest that the syncytiotrophoblast plays an important role in the cyclic nucleotide metabolism in the human term placenta and that there might be significant functional differences between its basal plasma membrane and its microvillous membrane.

Notes: Abstract A 41-year-old woman, who had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was admitted because of proteinuria, and rheumatoid and gastrointestinal symptoms just 1 year after onset. Renal biopsy revealed marked amyloid deposits of AA (amyloid A)-type. Genotyping of serum amyloid A (SAA) showed that she was homozygous for SAA1γ. Combined treatment with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone led to remission of both RA disease activity and proteinuria. Since the renal dysfunction arose from amyloidosis, arrested renal deterioration and a remission of proteinuria would result from a reduction of amyloid deposits. Therefore, early usage of immunosuppresive therapy such as a combined treatment with these two medicines would be useful against systemic amyloidosis secondary to RA, even if the patient has the risky SAA1γ/γ genotype.
