Notes: Optical gain spectra of (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs quantum-well lasers operating in the 1.3-μm-emission-wavelength regime are measured and compared to those of a commercial (GaIn)(AsP)/InP structure. Good agreement of the experimental results with computed spectra of a microscopic many-body theory is obtained. Due to the contributions of a second confined subband, a spectrally broad gain region is expected for (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs at elevated carrier densities. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Dynamic simulations of an isotropic suspension of particles in a viscous gas are performed. The energy in the suspension decays with time as a result of viscous dissipation in the gas. The rate of viscous dissipation in sufficiently energetic suspensions, those with a high Stokes number, is consistent with the theory of Sangani et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 313, 309–341 (1996)] for homogeneous hard-sphere suspensions. As the suspension loses energy, the dissipation rate decreases dramatically and the particles cluster as indicated by the presence of many more near neighbors than would be found in a hard sphere distribution. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Starting from the hydrodynamic description of the positive column in a neon glow discharge, a numerical approach is used in order to study the nonlinear properties of ionization waves. Within the instability region of the homogeneous equilibrium state, a secondary instability of the Eckhaus type is found. Compared to the classical results, the plasma system shows some peculiarities, e.g., an asymmetric stability band and strong selection of periodic patterns. The dependency of the shape and the width of this band on the discharge parameters is investigated. The spatiotemporal dynamics connected with the transitions from the stability band to the instability region have been studied showing different behavior on the upper and lower border of the stability region. Normally a subcritical Eckhaus instability has been revealed. Moreover, at selected sets of plasma parameters the phenomenon of spatiotemporal intermittency is found. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Conditions for the onset of irregular wave dynamics are derived from a theoretical description of ionization waves in a glow discharge by means of amplitude equations. It is shown that the Benjamin–Feir condition of the cubic Ginzburg–Landau equation is a necessary but not sufficient condition for loss of stability of plane waves in a higher order amplitude equation. The onset conditions are numerically evaluated in the case of a neon discharge. Experimental findings concerning the onset of chaotic wave dynamics near the critical point agree very well with the theoretical predictions. This example reveals physical relevance of higher order nonlinearities close to the critical point. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In recent Petawatt laser experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, several hundred joules of 1 μm laser light in 0.5–5.0-ps pulses with intensities up to 3×1020 W cm−2 were incident on solid targets and produced a strongly relativistic interaction. The energy content, spectra, and angular patterns of the photon, electron, and ion radiations have all been diagnosed in a number of ways, including several novel (to laser physics) nuclear activation techniques. About 40%–50% of the laser energy is converted to broadly beamed hot electrons. Their beam centroid direction varies from shot to shot, but the resulting bremsstrahlung beam has a consistent width. Extraordinarily luminous ion beams (primarily protons) almost precisely normal to the rear of various targets are seen—up to 3×1013 protons with kTion∼several MeV representing ∼6% of the laser energy. Ion energies up to at least 55 MeV are observed. The ions appear to originate from the rear target surfaces. The edge of the ion beam is very sharp, and collimation increases with ion energy. At the highest energies, a narrow feature appears in the ion spectra, and the apparent size of the emitting spot is smaller than the full back surface area. Any ion emission from the front of the targets is much less than from the rear and is not sharply beamed. The hot electrons generate a Debye sheath with electrostatic fields of order MV per micron, which apparently accelerate the ions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The positive oxide charge (Qox) and the concentration of nonradiative recombination defects (Nit) at a thin anodic oxide/p-Si interface are probed in situ by pulsed photovoltage and photoluminescence techniques during electron injection. Qox and Nit decreased strongly due to electron injection. The observed effect is suggested to be inverse to the negative-bias-temperature instability. Defect reactions at the anodic oxide/p-Si interface are discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Measurements of the magnetic field noise and the spatial correlation of the noise were made in a typical laboratory environment using two three-axis fluxgate magnetometers. The magnitude of the magnetic field noise was found to be approximately 100 pT/Hz at 10 Hz with a correlation of 90% at a separation of 1 m between the two sensors. The correlation was significantly reduced from noise induced eddy currents near large metallic surfaces. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe the design procedure for and realization of microwave bandpass filters that use two direct-coupled cylindrical cavities. Use of rectangular-to-circular waveguide transitions scrounged from commercial waveguide variable attenuators solved two problems: how to mate the filters to our microwave system that used rectangular waveguide and how to realize filters cheaply and quickly that could be used at different frequencies by changing only a small number of easily fabricated parts. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
