Notes: We have developed the highly efficient neutron detector system MANDALA for the inertial-confinement-fusion experiment. The MANDALA system consists of 842 elements plastic scintillation detectors and data acquisition electronics. The detection level is the yield of 1.2×105 for 2.5 MeV and 1×105 for 14.1 MeV neutrons (with 100 detected hits). We have calibrated the intrinsic detection efficiencies of the detector elements using a neutron generator facility. Timing calibration and integrity test of the system were also carried out with a 60Co γ ray source. MANDALA system was applied to the implosion experiments at the GEKKO XII laser facility. The integrity test was carried out by implosion experiments. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A technique for recording and retrieving small marks beyond the optical diffraction limit was proposed. The basic experiment with this technique was also carried out at a constant linear velocity of 2.0 m/s, rotating a disk with a multi-layered structure of Sb and GeSbTe, which were separated by a thin film of SiN. By use of the optically nonlinear property of the Sb thin film, carrier to noise ratio of more than 10 dB was obtained from recorded marks of 90 nm, using an optical system with the laser wavelength of 686 nm and a numerical aperture of 0.6. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. Enzyme activities and contents of manganese and copperzinc superoxide dismutase (Mn-, Cu/Zn-SOD) and oxygen free-radical scavengers were determined in the myocardium (right, left ventricle) and brain (cerebral cortex, hippocampus) of 15 and 31 week old stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).2. In 15 week old SHRSP myocardium, both Mn- and Cu/Zn-SOD activities were higher but in 31 week old SHRSP, these were lower than that in Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Further, correlation between Mn-SOD content and activity in 31 week old SHRSP myocardium showed that specific activity was lower than that in WKY.3. In 15 and 31 week old SHRSP cerebral cortex and hippocampus, SOD content and activity showed a tendency to be lower than that in WKY.4. These results indicate that enzymatically inactive or low-active Mn-SOD protein exists in SHRSP myocardium, and that the alteration of SOD may be one of the causative factors for the vulnerability of the myocardium and brain against O2-radicals.

Notes: Summary Temperature distribution during a fatigue process was examined under cyclic deflection in the non-linear region. The cyclic deflection caused a remarkable and local rise in temperature by the heating due to viscosity of air-dried wood. The appearance of the peak in temperature versus the logarithmic cyclic number was explained on the basis of viscosity change due to moisture movement and vaporization by heating during the fatigue process. The change of the temperature distribution was related to the heat transfer and the heat capacity of wood.

Notes: Summary For oven-dried wood applied non-linear deflection, the temperature rising AT was constant after the initially slight temperature rising, and then arose immediately before fatigue failure. Moreover, there was not the rapid reduction of dynamic stress as observed for moist wood. On the other hand, the process to fatigue failure for various moist wood depended upon the moisture content. For heating vs. moisture content, the heating increased with moisture content up to 13 to 20%, while it decreased gradually above 20%. The processes to fatigue failure at more than 13% moisture content were similar to one another. These results were explained on energy balance between the heating due to flexibility of moist molecules in wood substances and the energy consumption for moisture movement and vaporization. The present results supported the mechanism of fatigue behavior in the non-linear region which was proposed in the previous report.

Notes: The algorithm of parallelized conjugate gradient method for solving large-scale linear equations is investigated. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by solving sparse and full matrices on distributed memory type of parallel computer containing 296PUs. It is shown that the speed-up ratio of the parallel computation of sparse matrix is saturated at several ten PUs due to large broadcasting time of data among PUs.

Notes: Summary Deposits similar to corpora amylacea were observed by electron microscopy within myelinated axons in the peripheral nerves in a case of familial spastic paralysis. Ultrastructurally the deposits consisted of randomly interlacing short filaments which were closely related to glycogen granules present in the periphery of the deposits. A possible relationship between the filamentous structures and glycogen granules is discussed. The significance of this inclusion and of related bodies is also discussed.

Notes: Summary In a study of experimental autolysis of peripheral nerves of normal Wistar rats, crystalloid inclusions similar to Hirano bodies were observed. They occurred in the nuclei and cytoplasms of Schwann cells and in myelinated axons. They first developed after a 12-h autolysis and increased in number and size with time. Their fine structure, localization, and morphogenesis are discussed in relation to the autolysis of the cellular organelles.

Notes: Summary Abnormal Schwann cell inclusion is reported in biopsied peripheral nerve in a cases of infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy. In addition to non-specific dystrophic changes of the axons, the Schwann cells contained several distinct bodies which were composed of stacks of irregularly disposed membranes; in some instances, transformed Schwann cell cytoplasm was distinded with similar bodies. This change has not been reported on this condition and its significance is briefly discussed.
