    Notes: A compact pinhole camera is found to be useful for observation of a spatial distribution of hot ions by imaging energetic charge-exchange neutral atoms. One can obtain images of neutral atoms and of x rays in the same geometry only by selecting filtering foils at the pinhole opening of a single camera. Easy comparison between the images associated with distributions of ions and electrons is quite beneficial for physical analyses of plasmas. The imaging technique is expected also to be useful to determine space–time-resolved energy spectra of hot ions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electronic amplification gain of a microchannel plate (MCP), as employed for detector and image amplifier of an x-ray pinhole camera, tends to decrease as the output current increases, posing problems both in quantitative analyses and in construction of a three-dimensional emissivity distribution. We report that the output-current dependent MCP gain is described in a simple empirical formula that is determined by an in situ calibration experiment using a steady-state low-temperature discharge plasma. We examine the validity of the formula affirmatively in correcting raw data of x-ray images of magnetically trapped hot plasma. It is also demonstrated that the correction leads to a three-dimensional distribution of soft x-ray emissivity in a quadrupole-mirror-trapped hot plasma that is consistent with other indirect measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In conventional infrared (IR) thermographic cameras it is normally assumed that the ambient temperatures of optical objects are the same as the temperature determined at the camera head. In increasing cases of application of thermography, this assumption is not always satisfied, and often leads to erroneous results. In this article, we propose a determination scheme of the true temperature of such objects in an explicit form of equation to be solved by combining the readout temperature of the camera with a response function of the camera to a blackbody. The equation can be used to determine optical properties of components in an IR system. It also works to evaluate the contribution coming from each element along the optical path. Though the scheme is written in a form applicable to a specific camera among commercial products, it can be modified so that conventional IR cameras are conveniently used for thermographic determination of the temperature of gray objects in exotic environments. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Suspensions of rainbow trout erythrocytes in different physiological salines were compared with respect to their haematological and filtration properties.A method is described for the suspension of erythrocytes in Cortland saline which has proved suitable for studies of their mechanical properties over periods of several hours.Significant differences were found between whole blood samples taken during cannulation and after several days recovery, particularly mean cell volume, frequency distribution of red cell volumes and the pore passage time through nucleopore filters. These differences were also found using red cell suspensions of the same bloods. The pore passage time of whole blood sampled during cannulation or its suspensions is less than that of recovery blood although its mean cell volume is greater.

    Notes: Summary Flavonoids, (−)-epigallocatechin (1), myricetin (2) and quercetin (3), were investigated for inhibitory effects onE. coli DNA polymerase I and T7 bacteriophage RNA polymerase. In both DNA and RNA synthesis,1 and3 inhibited enzyme reactions by non-competitive and mixed type inhibition respecitively, with regard to template DNAs. Myricetin (2) inhibited DNA and RNA polymerase reactions by mixed type and competitive type inhibition, respectively, with template DNAs. It was suggested that2 interacts with covalently closed/circular DNA.

    Notes: Abstract. Background: To describe computed tomographic (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), ultrasonographic (US), and angiographic findings of retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma with emphasis on CT findings. Methods: Five CT, four US, four angiography, and two MR studies were obtained in five patients with pathologically proven retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma. Results: Tumors were larger than 10 cm (n = 4), well-cimcumscribed and heterogeneous (n = 4), and with massive intratumorous calcifications (n = 3) on plain CT or US. Tumors showed heterogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT scans (n = 4) and moderate hypervascularity with heterogeneous staining on angiography (n = 3). Tumors were essentially hypointense on T1-weighted MR images (n = 2) and heterogeneous hyperintense on T2-weighted MR images (n = 2). Plain CT showed a fat-dense structure in a tumor in one patient. Conclusions: The radiologic findings of large expansile heterogeneous masses in the retroperitoneum, especially with massive calcifications, were considered to be typical of malignant mesenchymomas.     Notes: Abstract  The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of intraperitoneal (i.p.) instillations of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and/or interleukin-2 (IL-2) on ascites formation and the survival time of nude mice with malignant ascites, produced by i.p. inoculation of human ovarian cancer cells. When the nude mice were treated with medium alone, ascites was observed in all mice 28 days after tumor inoculation. When the mice were treated with cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin) alone, G-CSF alone or IL-2 alone, it took 35 days for the ascites to form in all mice. When cisplatin was combined with G-CSF or IL-2, one of ten mice did not form ascites during the observation period. Surprisingly, when G-CSF and IL-2 were simultaneously administered, ascites formation was not observed in any mice. Although i.p. treatment with cisplatin alone significantly prolonged the survival time, compared to medium alone, the lytic activity of spleen cells against HRA cells was significantly suppressed. When G-CSF or IL-2 was combined with cisplatin, the suppression by cisplatin was eliminated and subsequently resulted in a prolongation of the survival time. When G-CSF was combined with IL-2, both the peritoneal and splenic macrophages/monocytes were stimulated and the splenic lytic activity was about double that following treatment with G-CSF alone on IL-2 alone, suggesting that complete inhibition of ascites formation results not only from a significant increase of the peritoneal macrophages but also from enhancement of the lytic activity. Two mice, died from dissemination of tumor in the abdominal cavity, but eight mice survived without tumor for more than 90 days. As confirmed by monitoring body weight and hematocrit, G-CSF and IL-2 seemed to have no adverse effect. From these results, we conclude that a combination therapy with G-CSF and IL-2 might be of clinical use for inhibiting large amounts of ascites, which may inhibit therapeutic effects for ovarian cancer patients.

    Notes: Summary Cerebellar primordia of different ages (embryonic days of 14 to 20) were transplanted into cerebella of normal syngeneic adult rats (Fischer 344). After 1–12 months (mostly 5–6 months), the host brains were examined by light and electron microscopy. In about 80% of our successful experiments, grafted Purkinje and/or granule cells migrated into the host molecular layer. Some granule cells migrated down along host Bergmann glia, reminiscent of their normal developmental migration route. Other granule cells migrated along astroglial processes that ensheathed capillary walls. Some grafted Purkinje cells were also located ectopically in the host molecular layer. They were identified as graft origins autoradiographically. This migration seemed to be encouraged under conditions where the subjacent host Purkinje cells had been lost. Where the grafted Purkinje cells were located on top of the host molecular layer, their primary dendrites faced vertically downwards into the host molecular layer. However, the position of the apical poles of migrated Purkinje cell bodies in the deeper aspect of the molecular layer varied considerably, suggesting that the orientation of the Purkinje cell dendrites is probably determined by the availability of afferent fibers. Thus, the present study has demonstrated that Purkinje and granule cells can migrate from embryonic cerebellar grafts into the molecular layer of the normal, adult host rat cerebellum.

    Notes: Abstract We report brain MRI findings in four patients with typical Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) and correlate them with clinical manifestations. MRI was interpreted as normal in two patients; cerebral and cerebellar atrophy was seen in the other two. On T2-weighted spin-echo images, two patients had high-signal lesions bilaterally in subcortical white matter, thalamus and brain stem. In one patient, the white matter lesion extended into the deep cerebral white matter and the cerebellum was also affected. The other also had bilateral high-signal lesions in the globus pallidus. There was little correlation between neurological deficits and MRI findings. A review of the literature revealed that 10 of the 13 patients with typical KSS previously studied had bilateral subcortical white-matter lesions on T2-weighted images; at least 7 also had high-signal lesions in the brain stem, globus pallidus, thalamus or cerebellum. Although MRI may be normal or show atrophy, the characteristic finding in KSS is a combination of the high-signal foci in subcortical cerebral white matter and in the brain stem, globus pallidus or thalamus.
