Notes: We discuss an acoustic loss mechanism in surface-acoustic wave resonators on 36° YX-cut lithium tantalate substrate. Recent acoustic field scans performed with an optical Michelson interferometer reveal a spatially asymmetric acoustic field atop the busbars of a resonator, giving rise to acoustic beams which escape the resonator area and lead to undesired losses. Here, we link the phenomenon with the inherent crystalline anisotropy of the substrate: the shape of the slowness curves and the asymmetry of the polarization for leaky surface-acoustic waves, propagating at an angle with respect to the crystal X-axis. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Static magnetic and spin wave properties of square lattices of permalloy micron dots with thicknesses of 500 and 1000 Å and with varying dot separations have been investigated. A magnetic fourfold anisotropy was found for the lattice with dot diameters of 1 μm and a dot separation of 0.1 μm. The anisotropy is attributed to an anisotropic dipole–dipole interaction between magnetically unsaturated parts of the dots. The anisotropy strength (order of 105 erg/cm3) decreases with increasing in-plane applied magnetic field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Obduktionsfall eines 45jährigen Mannes.
Notes: Summary An autopsy case of a 45-year-old man is presented. The man had sustained a minor head injury in a traffic accident 11 years ago previously and 5 years later had a cerebral infarction due to thrombosis of the carotid artery. There was histological evidence of a traumatic lesion of the vessel wall. Several contradictory expert opinions were rendered regarding the questionable causal relationship between occlusion of the artery and the previous trauma. In the court of appeal, an agreement was arrived at between the widow of the deceased and the third-party insurance of the person responsible for the accident.

Notes: Summary Embryogenic and non-embryogenic long-term callus cultures of hexaploid wheat exhibit differences in the organization of their mitochondrial genome. Embryogenic and non-embryogenic fractions of callus cultures initiated from immature embryos of the wheat cultivar “Chinese Spring” have been isolated and subsequently subcultured. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments using labelled cloned wheat mitochondrial DNA fragments have shown that the mitochondrial DNA organization of embryogenic subcultures derived from embryogenic parts of “Chinese Spring” calli is closely related to that of the initial “Chinese Spring” calli, while non-embryogenic subcultures derived from non-embryogenic fragments of “Chinese Spring” calli exhibit a mitochondrial DNA organization similar to that found in non-embryogenic calli derived from cultivar “Aquila”. In addition, somatic tissue cultures initiated from three other non-embryogenic wheat cultivars (“Talent”, “Thésée” and “Capitole”) display mitochondrial DNA arrangements similar to those found in cultivar “Aquila”. These results strongly suggest that, in wheat callus cultures, a particular mitochondrial genome organization is correlated with the ability of cultured cells to regenerate whole plants.

Notes: Abstract  Krüppel (Kr), a member of the gap class of Drosophila segmentation genes, encodes a zinc finger-type transcription factor. After blastoderm formation, Kr is expressed in various spatially and temporally restricted patterns of the developing embryo, including a subset of muscle precursors. By virtue of Krüppel in vitro binding sites, we identified a putative Kr target gene, termed KrT95D. It encodes a novel protein which contains evolutionarily conserved regions. KrT95D is expressed in spatially restricted patterns throughout embryogenesis. Kr and KrT95D expression overlap in several locations including muscle precursor cells, the tip cell of the Malpighian tubules and the ventral midline cells of the central nervous system. Results from the analysis of the KrT95D expression pattern in Kr loss-of-fuction and Kr gain-of-function embryos suggest that Kr activity is not essential for KrT95D expression in most locations of the embryo, except in the muscle precursors VO5.

Notes: Abstract We assessed high-resolution MRI of the lacrimal system with conjunctival contrast enhancement in patients with suspected stenosis. We studied 18 patients with epiphora affecting 22 eyes, using a surface coil, before and after conjunctival and intravenous Gd-DTPA. Stenosis or obstruction of the ducts was found in 18 of 22 cases: at canalicular level in 3 cases, at the sac in 7 cases, and in the nasolacrimal duct in 8 cases. Periductal pathology following surgery to the maxillary sinus or dacryocystorhinostomy was seen in three cases. In conjunction with the findings on syringing and/or conventional dacryocystography, the narrowing was classified as stenosis or obstruction.

Notes: Abstract Northern analyses and reverse transcription-polymerase chain-reaction (RT-PCR) experiments, followed by PCR amplification product sequencing, were performed on total mitochondrial (mt) RNAs from wheat seedlings and tissue cultures. It was shown that the rps13 gene, which encodes ribosomal protein S13, and the atp6 gene, which encodes subunit 6 of the ATP synthase complex, were co-transcribed. However, rps13 transcripts were virtually undetectable in seedlings under conditions where atp6 transcripts appeared abundant. In addition, markedly higher steady state transcript levels were observed in tissue culture. Expression of the mitochondrial rps13 gene was confirmed by showing that its transcripts were edited. Slight differences between editing patterns of tissue-culture and whole-plant transcripts were found. Taken together, these results suggest that in vitro culture could disturb the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression.
