Notes: Summary Effects of 10 MeV-electron radiation on thiamine dichloride in crystalline form and in solution, and on thiamine in dried whole egg are described. Both in the dry state and in aqueous solutions, radiation induced reactions continue to affect thiamine over a considerable period of time after irradiation. Thiamine losses decrease in the order: dry thiamine dichloride, aqueous solution, hydrochloric acid solution, dried whole egg.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A pulverized mixture ofAgaricus species known to accumulate cadmium, mixed 15∶85 with standard rat diet, was fed to a group of growing rats. The mixture contained 3.87 μg Cd/g dry weight. A control group received the standard rat diet alone (0.08 μg Cd/g). During the feeding period of 6 weeks the animals of both groups excreted about 90 % of the ingested cadmium in the faeces. In comparison to the control group, the experimental group accumulated much more cadmium in liver, kidneys, and remaining carcass. While it is concluded that the bioavailability of cadmium contained in mushrooms is not less than that of cadmium contained in other feeds and foods, most mushroom species do not contain more cadmium than other vegetables. In humans the average cadmium intake from the total diet is considerably below the tolerable level. Generalized warnings against consumption of mushrooms are therefore not considered necessary.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Beginning on the 25th day of life and for 2 weeks thereafter Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a casein diet containing 10% of gum guar. The animals were given.14C algal protein or14C algal protein hydrolysate by stomach tube and the radioactivity in some tissues and tissue proteins was determined 3 h after the application. Radioactivity in blood and in respiratory CO2 was measured up to 3 h and 6 h, respectively, after the application. The results indicate no effect of gum guar on the utilization of the protein or of the amino acids of the protein hydrolysate.

Notes: Abstract A case of successful obliteration of a bleeding splenic artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to necrotizing pancreatitis is reported. The material used for embolization was stainless steel coils. A variation of the technique is introduced. Instead of occluding the pseudoaneurysm cavity itself, embolization only of the afferent vessel is advised.

Notes: Summary Magnetic property variations in marine, lacustrine and loess-paleosol sequences have proved to be useful proxies in climate change studies. However in order to correctly interpret the record of the magnetic property variations it is absolutely necessary to have a good understanding of the cause of the observed variations. Most of the ambiguity in loess-paleosol studies is in distinguishing the role of pedogenesis from other climatic factors. Studying the mineral magnetic properties of the protected cave sediments which have not undergone pedogenesis allows us to determine the degree to which detrital input is climatically driven. These results will help us better understand the variations observed in the surficial loess-paleosol sequences. This study reports mineral magnetic data collected from entrance facies sediments deposited during the early Wurmian glacial stage in the Kůlna Cave. The entrance facies sediments consist of loess-like silts with varying amount of talus. The magnetic susceptibility record from these sediments shows higher values in layers originating in colder climates which is different to that commonly observed in surficial loess deposits. Higher values of magnetic susceptibility in Kůlna sediments are probably due to higher concentrations of ferromagnetic minerals (magnetite and maghemite) and due to an increased proportion of superparamagnetic grains. The magnetic mineralogy and the grainsize distribution (grains larger than superparamagnetic) appear not to change throughout the studied profiles. Higher magnetic susceptibility accompanied by an increase in the superparamagnetic fraction observed in the sediments deposited during colder periods can be explained by an increased input from a pedogenic source when the vegetation cover was reduced and the erosion rate increased.

Notes: A GC method for the determination of oxygenated additives in reformulated gasolines (RFG) is described. The method uses on-column injection and atomic emission selective detection of oxygenates using the 777 nm NIR emission line. Detection limits are approximately 10 ppm oxygen. Results compared well with other techniques, such as GC/FTIR.
