    Notes: We have observed large differences in the lasing wavelength and threshold current for [11¯0]- and [110]-striped AlGaInP lasers that are fabricated from a single wafer grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. With the laser stripe aligned parallel to the [110] direction, the lasing wavelength is about 6 nm shorter than that with the [11¯0] stripe. The threshold current (Ith) of the [110]-striped laser is 10 mA higher than that of the [11¯0]-striped laser. The differences are found to be well explained by the splitting of the valence band due to the (111) ordering in the AlGaInP lasers.

    Notes: A tunable optical switch has been studied of a symmetric self-electro-optic effect device based on Wannier–Stark localization (WSL) in GaAs/AlAs superlattices. This device is driven by two different wavelengths for a signal beam and a control beam. Clear bistability and/or triple stability are demonstrated by controlling the illumination wavelengths. The tunability of the switching properties is clearly explained by the WSL mechanism.

    Notes: Polymer optical fiber amplifiers (POFA) of graded-index (GI) type, which have a gain in visible region, were successfully prepared by the interfacial-gel polymerization technique. The gain of 27 dB was observed at 591 nm signal wavelength with 690 W launched pump power at 532 nm in a GI POFA with 0.5 m length.

    Notes: Two cases of atopic asthma caused by acid protease produced by Candida albicans are reported. Both patients had high levels of serum IgE antibodies against the acid protease and showed positive conjunctival and immediate bronchial responses when challenged with the protease. Significant histamine release was detected in both patients when their peripheral leukocytes were challenged with the protease antigen. These findings clearly showed that C. albicans acid protease is the causative allergen of atopic asthma.

To characterize the anti-arrhythmic properties of a new calcium antagonist, monotepil, AJ-2615, the preventive effects of AJ-2615 were compared with those of the existing calcium antagonists, diltiazem and verapamil, in experimental models of arrhythmia.2. AJ-2615 (0.1–3.0 mg/kg, i.v.) suppressed ventricular arrhythmias induced by adrenaline (10 μg/kg, i.v.) in rats. AJ-2615 (0.1 mg/kg per min for 2 min, i.v.) also suppressed atrial tachycardia induced by aconitine (0.01% aconitine solution) in rats.3. In these activities, AJ-2615 was comparable to or more potent than diltiazem and verapamil which are widely used for the treatment of arrhythmia.4. In pro-arrhythmic activity, AJ-2615 was less potent than diltiazem and verapamil.5. These results suggest that AJ-2615 would be a safer anti-arrhythmic agent, with less proarrhythmic liability than diltiazem and verapamil.

    Notes: Effects of soft lining materials on the growth and/or acid production of Candida albicans were investigated using a simplified method monitoring the pH change in the growth medium. Reverse sigmoidal pH curves were observed with all samples and, as compared with acrylic, all soft lining materials inhibited fungal growth or acid production in the following way, i.e. delay of the beginning of a rapid and linear decline in pH, decreases in the rate of linear change in pH and increases in minimum pH.Further examinations using a surface-modified glass tube revealed that the order of Candida growth agreed with the relative hydrophobicity and adherence capacity of substrates, suggesting that this adherence capacity affected the yeast growth on their surfaces.Besides adherence capacities of substrates, the powder, liquid and plasticizer of some soft lining materials directly inhibited Candida growth. Thus, the results obtained here revealed that several factors within soft lining materials affected Candida growth and/or acid production.

    Notes: Abstract. A study was undertaken in 1987 to determine the prevalence of infectious panercatic necrosis virus (1PNV) infection in the lake trout population of Cornwall Lake. Alberta, Canada, and its pathogenicity to cultivable salmonid fish. Virological examination indicated that 44.4% of the adult lake trout in the lake, which is situated in a remote northern region of Alberta, were infected with the virus, mainly in the pyloric caeca and intestine. Virus was not detected in kidney, leucocytes, liver or gonads. In experimental immersion infection of brook trout fry, the virus caused a cumulative mortality of up to 74% in 30 days, beginning at 10 days post-infection. Pyloric caeca, intestine and to some extent gills were found to be early sites of viral replication. The virus was less pathogenic to rainbow trout causing a cumulative mortality of 10% and the survivors were IPNV carriers for at least 3 months. The virus did not cause mortality in young lake trout, the natural host, but the infected fish carried the virus during the experimental period of 30 days.

    Notes: The fine structure of the egg envelope and micropyle was studied in unfertilized and developing eggs of the flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel), the Alaska pollack Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas), the Japanese tilefish Branchiostegus japonicus (Houttuyn) and the porgy Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel). The outer envelope surface of the unfertilized egg was wrinkled, while the inner surface was folded. The micropyle of the unfertilized egg consisted of a shallow vestibule and a distinct canal. The micropylar region of the inner surface of the envelope had a conical- or bowl-shaped protrusion. In developing eggs, the thickness of the envelope decreased and showed smooth outer and inner surfaces which indicated that it had been stretched tangentially at the time of the perivitelline space formation. The lumen of the micropylar canal was invariably occupied with envelope material. We postulate that the blockage of the micropylar canal is a result of the stretching of the envelope. The closure of the micropyle inhibits sperm and external pathogens from penetrating into the perivitelline space and seems to be involved in both the permanent prevention of polyspermy and the protection of the developing embryo from bacterial infection.

    Notes: The micropylar canal of the chum salmon egg was almost completely closed following egg activation caused by incubation in a hypotonic salt solution (HSS) for I h. The closure occurred in both inseminated and parthenogenetically activated eggs. Incubation of isolated envelopes from non-activated eggs in HSS or perivitelline fluid (PVF) did not induce any modification in micropylar structure, indicating that normal organization of the egg is essential for inducing closure. To reduce the volume of the perivitelline fluid, the eggs were activated in PVF or HSS containing 8 mM Dextran, Although the envelope showed hardening, closure of the micropyle was not observed in these eggs. The wall of the micropylar canal, however, possessed a slightly rough surface. Following activation in a Ca-free hypotonic salt solution with 10 mM EDTA, hardening of the egg envelope was completely inhibited. Although such eggs possessed an apparent perivitelline space, neither closure of the micropylar canal nor roughening of the canal surface were detected. We conclude that the synergistic action of perivitelline turgor pressure and perivitelline material is responsible for the closure of the micropyle.
