Notes: Abstract Chordee without hypospadias is found in a small number of patients. Surgical treatment differs according to the length of the urethra. Sometimes a maldeveloped short urethra requires transection to achieve good straightening of the penis. The authors present two such patients in whom a transverse preputial island-flap, as described by Duckett for the treatment of hypospadias, was used with good results.

Notes: Summary An eddy effect of tropical deep convection on the large-scale momentum, resp vorticity budget is investigated. The process is specified by a simple parameterization approach which is based on a concept of rotating clouds exerting a momentum on the large-scale flow. The cloud rotation is associated with the thermal properties of a cloud ensemble by the principle of conservation of potential vorticity. A decomposition of cloud classes is applied in consistency with the thermodynamical parameterization scheme of Arakawa and Schubert (1974). The parameterization is tested with observations of GATE74, Phase III. The data are processed on a B/C-scale grid (55km) in a region within 9N and 16N, and between 21W and 27W, and with a vertical resolution of 41 levels. The parameterization results correspond to the observed patterns, especially in situations with strong large-scale wind shear. The findings suggest that certain large-scalle flow regimes provoke convective scale momentum generation rather than redistributing large-scale momentum by convective circulations.

Notes: Abstract Far infrared reflectivity measurements are performed on a series of GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well (MQW) heterostructures with systematically varied thicknesses of the constituent layers. In addition to the artificial anisotropy we observe two distinct bulk-like “Reststrahlen” regions. The widths of the GaAs-like and the AlAs-like “Reststrahlen” bands strongly depend on the relative thicknesses of the constituent layers of the MQW heterostructures, in excellent agreement with the predictions of the effective-medium theory.

Notes: Summary The efficacy of extended release felodipine 10 mg (ER) o.d., a new dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, and 25 mg hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) o.d. have been compared in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial in 28 mildly to moderately hypertensive subjects (supine diastolic blood pressure, BP, ≥95 mm Hg and ≤110 mm Hg on three separate occasions). Both drugs significantly reduced systolic and diastolic BP in the sitting position felodipine from 157.1/93.8 mm Hg at baseline to 133/78.9 mm Hg 2.5 h after medication and to 138/82.7 mm Hg after 2 weeks of treatment, and HCTZ from 156/95.6 mm Hg to 147/88.4 mm Hg 2.5 h after medication and to 149/89.5 mm Hg also after 2 weeks. A decrease of the same magnitude in standing systolic and diastolic BP was observed after both treatment regimens with the exception of diastolic BP 2.5 h after dosing with HCTZ, which was not significantly lower. At all times (2.5 h and 2 weeks), the reduction in systolic and diastolic BP was greater after felodipine compared to HCTZ. Heart rate was significantly increased after felodipine in both the sitting and standing positions, and both 2.5 h following medication and after 2 weeks of treatment. The difference between the regimens was significant only 2.5 h after dosing. Overall, felodipine 10 mg ER o.d. was superior to 25 mg HCTZ o.d. in lowering BP.

Notes: Abstract We present the results obtained from systematic studies of positron creation for a series of heavy-collision systems, with united chargeZ u =Z 1 +Z 2 ranging fromZ u =164 (Pb + Pb) toZ u =184 (U+U) at bombarding energies close to the Coulomb barrier, using the Orangeβ-spectrometer at GSI. For each collision system studied, the dominating continuous distributions due to quasiatomic and nuclear positron emission are determined accurately. This is essential in obtaining the characteristics of the still unexplained monoenergetic positron lines which appear in the energy range between 200 keV and 400 keV. Our results are compared with coupled-channels calculations for quasi-atomic positron creation. The latter describe quite well the global features of the measured spectra, but overestimate systematically their absolute values. From the comparison, a common normalization factor of about 0.75 can be established for the calculated spectra. In particular, the dependence onZ u of the measured emission probabilities was found to follow a power law (∝Z u 195±1), in fair agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Notes: Abstract Enantiomer separation of (6Z,9Z)-cis-3,4-epoxynonadecadiene and (3Z,9Z)-cis-6,7-epoxynonadecadiene could be achieved using chiral high-resolution gas chromatography and a cyclodextrin-bond column. (3Z,9Z)-(6R,7S)-Epoxynonadecadiene was identified from ovipositor extracts ofColotois pen-Naria, while inErannis defoliaria the 6S,7R-enantiomer was found. In field trapping tests pure synthetic enantiomers caught only conspecific males of these species. (3Z,6Z,9Z)-Nonadecatriene was found in both species, while the presence of (3Z,6Z,9Z)-heneicosatriene was indicated inC. Pennaria only. A 10∶10∶3 blend of (3Z,9Z)-(6R,7S)-epoxynonadecadiene, (3Z,6Z,9Z)-heneicosatriene, and (3Z,6Z,9Z)-nonadecatriene was found to be optimal for catchingC. Pennaria, whileE. Defoliaria males were optimally caught by a 1∶1 mixture of (3Z,9Z)-(6S,7R)-epoxynonadecadiene and (3Z,6Z,9Z)-nona-decatriene. (6Z,9Z)-(3S,4R)-Epoxynonadecadiene was identified from ovipositor extracts ofAgriopis (Erannis) aurantiaria. In field tests the pure enantiomer proved to be a highly specific sex attractant for both the late autumn/early winter flyingA. Aurantiaria and the late winter/early spring flyingA. Leucophearia. Males ofAgriopis marginaria, which fly in late winter/early spring, were attracted to (3Z,9Z)-(6S,7R)-epoxynonadecadiene. The addition of (3Z,6Z,9Z)-nonadecatriene to theS,R-enantiomer increased captures. Optimal catches were recorded with a 10∶3 epoxide-hydrocarbon blend. Enantiomer specificity in all species was confirmed in EAG measurements.

Notes: Abstract We present the results obtained from a series of ρ+ρ−-coincidence measurements in heavy-ion collisions using the double-Orangeβ-spectrometer at GSI. The collision systems U+U, U+Pb, and U+Ta were investigated at bombarding energies close to and slightly above (U+Ta) the Coulomb barrier. For all systems studied, very narrow (FWHM−20 keV) ρ+ρ− lines were observed in the sum-energy spectra, with kinetic energies ranging from ∼555 keV to ∼810 keV, superimposed on a continuous distribution mainly due to uncorrelated ρ+ρ− emission. Particularly in the U+Ta system, a pronounced sum-energy line appears at ∼634 keV, predominantly in deep-inelastic collisions. In some cases (e.g. U+Pb) the line characteristics is consistent with a two-body decay mode of an emitter which moves with the c.m. velocity of the colliding ions. However, other lines, and in particular the 634 keV line (U+Ta), exhibit a rather isotropical opening-angle distribution whereas their energy is unequally shared between positrons and electrons, thus being in clear disagreement with this scenario. In general, the data preclude an emission from the separated (moving) nuclei, and, in the latter cases, provide evidence that the e+e−-pair decay occurs in the vicinity of the Coulomb field of a third heavy (positively charged) partner having only a small transverse velocity (|v|⊥〈0.02c)
