Notes: Abstract The effects of the light-dark (LD) cycle and its inversion on the susceptibility of mice to lead were investigated. Groups of mice were injected once with a high (200 mg Pb/kg body weight) or low (10 mg Pb/kg body weight) dose of lead acetate at one of four-hourly intervals, i.e., 09.00 h, 13.00 h, 17.00 h, 21.00 h, 01.00h, and 05.00 h, on the days before and after a phase shift in the LD cycle. The main indices used to measure the susceptibility of the mice were dying rate and percent mortality of ICR mice following injection together with the Pb concentration (Pb-B) and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in the blood. In the present study, we ascertained the following facts: (1) Dying rate (time to death following injection) and Pb-B exhibited a circadian rhythm with a peak initiated by injection in the dark period. (2) Injection with a low dose of lead within a few days after an LD inversion significantly decreased the level of ALAD activity and increased the Pb in the blood in comparison with control animals kept under a non-inverted LD cycle. Both the dying rate and the percent mortality following a high dose of lead, however, were hardly affected.

Notes: Abstract Samples of synthetic diaplectic anorthite glass (38 GPa shock pressure), thermal glass and synthetic anorthite crystals were investigated using infrared spectral methods at one atmosphere and high pressures (near 4 GPa). Band positions and pressure derivatives for the Si-O asymmetric modes in the region 1,300–900 cm−1 indicate that the diaplectic glass has more structural similarities with the crystalline material than with thermal glass even though the overall infrared spectral characteristics suggest a glassy state.

Notes: Abstract Raman microprobe spectra were made on three post shock, diaplectic plagioclase feldspars. Optical and X-ray diffraction studies indicated that feldspars maintained a partially or totally crystalline state after having passed through the mixed phase zone of Hugoniot response to shock waves (15–38 GPa). The appearance of uniquely glass-type spectra occurs at different shock pressures for each specimen according to its atomic structural arrangement, below 38 GPa for mosaic structured labradorite, near 40 GPa for anorthite and above 50 GPa for the highly ordered low albite. The diaplectic anorthite and labradorite glasses give spectra which indicate the presence of two glass types. Shifts in the band envelope frequencies compared to spectra of fused glass and statically pressure densified glass suggest that these glasses have specific structural arrangements. These differences suggest that the shock and fusion glass-forming processes are not exactly identical. The results from material shocked in the mixed phase region of Hugoniot response show that the phase transitions are effected at different pressures depending upon the feldspar structural type.

Notes: Abstract Females heterozygous for the X-linked urea cycle disorder, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency have a significant risk of developing hyperammonaemia. Diagnosis of this genetic defect in a proband is the essential starting point for family studies. By an immunohistochemical analysis of the liver specimens fixed in 10% formalin, we confirmed heterozygous status for OTC deficiency in two female patients, a 15-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl, who died of hyperammonaemia. Since most affected males lack cross reactive materials (CRM), an immunochemical analysis should be useful for the diagnosis of most heterozygous females.

Notes: Abstract The stiffness matrix of a 4-nodes insoparametric element for the two dimensional finite element analysis is evaluated using the symbolic mathematics systems, called REDUCE. The results are compared with those obtained by numerical integration. It is shown that there exist some differences between the numerical values of the stiffness matrix by symbolic and numerical integrations. The differences become smaller as the integration points of the numerical integration increases, which means that the results obtained by symbolic integration give accurate values. The stiffness matrix in elastic-plastic state is also evaluated using symbolic mathematics, and it is shown that the results agree with those obtained by numerical integration. It is pointed out that there is a possibility to decrease the CPU time by using the symbolic mathematics system.

Notes: Abstract Pressureless-sintered SiC pieces and SiC single crystals were joined with foils of reactive metals at 1500° C (1773 K) for titanium and zirconium foils or at 1000° C (1273 K) for Al/Ti/Al foils. Bend testing at various temperatures up to 1400° C (1673 K), optical and electron microscopy, and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis studies were carried out on the specimens. From the results, it was concluded that the fairly high bond strength of titanium-foil joined SiC specimens might be attributed to the formation of a Ti3SiC2 compound, since good lattice matching between SiC and Ti3SiC2 was obtained in the SiC single crystals. Also in the Al/Ti/Al-foil joined SiC, high bond strength was obtained, but it decreased steeply at 600° C (873 K) because of a retained aluminium phase. The bond strength in the zirconium-foil joined SiC was low.

Notes: Abstract Shock-loading experiments are performed on single-crystal specimens of BaZnGeO4 (BZG) between 13 and 51 GPa using a propellant gun and a two-stage light gas gun. Observation by an optical microscope reveals that all the shocked specimens are made of fragmented blocks of 10 ∼ 100 μm in size. X-ray analyses indicate that the samples shocked to pressures above 41 GPa became a polycrystalline state of BZG with a weakly textured structure. A small amount of dissociation products of BaGeO3 (pyroxene type) and ZnO (wurtzite type) are detected in this pressure range. Between 27 and 19 GPa, a new phase which is thought to be produced by considerable deformations in the ring structure consisting of ZnO4 and GeO4 tetrahedra is observed. Below 19 GPa, shocked specimens are brought into a well aligned mosaic structure, but no significant change in the crystal structure is detected.

Notes: Abstract Diffusion couples of Al2O3 single-crystal, sapphire, and Nb polycrystal were heat-treated in the temperature range 1873 to 2073 K under pressure in the range 3 to 15.2 MN m−2 for various times up to 3.6×103 sec. Tensile testing at various temperatures up to 1873 K in a vacuum of about 10−3 Pa, Knoop hardness testing at room temperature, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis studies were carried out on the specimens. From the results, it was concluded that the fairly high bond strength of a Al2O3-Nb interface might be attributed to the formation of a thin NbO x layer, which had grown epitaxially on the Al2O3 surface. Lattice matching between Al2O3 and NbO x phases was also considered.
