Notes: New types of focusing lenses for relativistic electron beams (REBs) are proposed, and preliminary experimental results are obtained. The principle of the lenses is as follows: When REBs are injected into the small apertures of cylindrical superconducting lenses, self-magnetic fields of the REBs are perfectly confined in a region between the REBs and the wall of the lenses. The REBs are focused by those compressed fields. The superiority of superconducting lenses was shown using foilless REB diodes which were operated at 0.15-Torr Ne and had high-Tc , cylindrical superconductor anodes made of Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds (axial lengths of 30 and 145 mm and an inner diameter of 20 mm). The focused REBs (0.8 kA, 270 keV, pulse widths of less than 5 ns) had main beam diameters less than 2 mm.

Notes: Abstract Between June 1984 and April 1985, five patients (4.2%) had tricuspid regurgitation detected on pulsed Doppler echocardiography among 119 patients with Kawasaki disease. The grade of tricuspid regurgitation was moderate in three and mild in two patients; conventional cardiac examinations revealed no evidence of this complication. All patients had associated coronary artery aneurysms except one, but no patients developed subsequent myocardial infarction. The occurrence of tricuspid regurgitation following Kawasaki disease has been considered to be causally related to the carditis, a frequent complication during the acute febrile period of the illness. The present data indicate that tricuspid regurgitation is an additional cardiovascular complication of Kawasaki disease and that Doppler echocardiography is useful in detecting this disorder.

Notes: Summary Four autopsied cases of tardive dyskinesia manifesting oral hyperkinesia revealed markedly inflated neurons in the cerebellar dentate nucleus (DN), which had not been described previously. The inflation of the neurons was proved to be statistically significant (P〈0.01) by morphometric study. The nuclei were usually situated in the central portion of the cytoplasm. This inflated change was different from both central chromatolysis and grumose degeneration of the DN, typically observed in progressive supranuclear palsy and dentatorubropallidolysian atrophy, and seemed to be easy to miss without careful observation, since neuronal loss and gliosis were very mild in the DN. Among a few autopsied cases of tardive dyskinesia reported previously, degeneration of the DN was described in only two. It is believed, however, that the inflated neurons of the DN may not be so rare and may be related to the occurrence of some involuntary hyperkinesia, especially oral hyperkinesia following some neurotoxic disorders and/or neuroleptic medications.

Notes: Summary Human and rat α-calcitonin gene-related peptides (CGRPs) caused relaxation of porcine coronary arterial strips precontracted by 10−5 M of prostaglandin (PG) F2α at low concentrations. pD2 values for human and rat CGRPs in endothelium-preserved strips were 8.41 ± 0.03 (n = 5) and 8.49 ± 0.03 (n = 5), respectively. The same concentrations of CGRPs relaxed the endothelium-depleted preparations. CGRPs were much more potent and had steeper concentration-response curves than isoproterenol, nitroglycerin (GTN), isobutyhnethylxanthine (IBMX), verapamil and nifedipine. Like isoproterenol, GTN and IBMX, but in contrast to the calcium antagonists, the relaxing potencies of human and rat CGRPs were greatly reduced in the strips precontracted by 50 mM of KCI. The relaxation caused by human CGRP was not affected by treatment with propranolol (10−6 M) or cimetidine (10−5 M). Human CGRP (1.6 × 10−8 M) caused a significant (about 2-fold) elevation of the content of cyclic AMP in coronary tissue but did not cause any change in the content of cyclic GMP. CGRP-like immunoreactive fibers were found to be localized in the adventitia but not in the media or intima of the coronary artery. These results indicate a direct and endothelium-independent potent relaxant action of CGRP in coronary vessels. This relaxation could be caused by a mechanism not shared by calcium antagonists but associated with the rise in cyclic AMP.

Notes: Summary This paper is a report on our studies on superinfections in respiratory tract infections treated during the years 1981–1984. The isolated strains ofStaphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecium and glucose non-fermentative gram-negative rods such asPseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant to third-generation cephem antibiotics. These organisms proved to be widely distributed in hospitals and were frequently isolated from the sputum, excised lung and cardiac blood. The colonization of the sputum by bacteria in respiratory tract infections before, during and after treatment with third-generation cephem antibiotics revealed a tendency for these organisms to appear after treatment. Among the gram-positive cocci,S. faecium was most resistant to these antibiotics, followed byS. faecalis, S. epidermidis andS. aureus in that order. The incidence of resistant isolates in 1984 exceeded that in 1983, suggesting an annual increase in resistant bacteria.

Notes: Summary Three patients presented a characteristic retinopathy presumbly induced by light arising from operating microscope during extracapsular cataract extraction combined with intraocular lens insertion. The operating microscope was equipped with video-recorder. Light sources were tungsten bulb. All cases were asymptomatic and an inspection at the post-operative control examination led to the detection of this type of retinopathy.

Notes: Abstract Stability constants of Eu/III/ and Th/IV/ with heteropolyanion, P2W18O 62 6− , have been determined by means of the solvent extraction technique. It was found that Eu/III/ forms only 1∶1 complex and Th/IV/ forms 1∶1 and 1∶2 complexes. The stability constants are: Eu/III/: 1g β1 = 6.71±0.15; Th/IV/: 1g β1 = 11.3±0.3 and 1g β2 = 17.8±0.3, at pH 5.00 and the ionic strength of 0.7OM NaCl. The values suggested the complexes would be of inner-sphere type.

Notes: In the polarized Raman spectra of K3Mn(CN)6 and K3Cr(CN)6, soft modes are observed in both the roomtemperature and the low-temperature phases. The frequencies of these modes decrease as the transition temperatures [205 K for K3Mn(CN)6 and 215 K for K3Cr(CN)6] are approached from both sides. Unambiguous spectroscopic evidence for the second-order displacive phase transition was obtained on the basis of the soft mode behaviour in both crystals. High-pressure Raman spectra of K3Cr(CN)6 were measured up to 35 kbar using a diamond anvil cell. A pressure-induced phase transition occurs at ca 10 kbar.
