Notes: A significant improvement in the maximum output power of a 1.3 μm GaInAsP/InP laser with a semi-insulating current confinement structure is reported. The improvement has been achieved by interposing an n-type InP layer between a p-InP substrate and an Fe-doped InP layer. A maximum cw output power of 180 mW and a modulation bandwidth of 8.5 GHz have been obtained.

Notes: A maximum cw power of 90 mW at 25 °C was obtained for a GaInAsP/InP laser with a semi-insulating InP current blocking layer grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy on a p-type InP substrate, a 700-μm-long cavity, and an antireflection coating on the front facet. The 3 dB bandwidth was in excess of 6 GHz with a low parasitic capacitance of 15 pF despite the long cavity. The semi-insulating layer with the resistivity of 5×107 Ω cm was formed by doping only Fe. The current blocking characteristics of the blocking layer with the same configuration as the lasers were examined under various temperatures.

Notes: Critical temperatures Tc and critical currents Ic under uniaxial tensile loading have been studied on multifilamentary Nb3Al wires fabricated by a newly developed composite diffusion process. Both Tc and Ic are monotonically decreased with applied strain, showing reversible behavior up to fracture strains of the wires at about 1.3%. These characteristics may be attributed to the composite wire structure, namely to the small difference in thermal contraction between the niobium matrix and the Nb3Al filaments, as well as to the extremely small sizes of the Nb3Al filaments.

Notes: High-field critical current densities Jc and pinning behavior are discussed for Nb-63a/oTi, Nb-61.7a/oTi-3a/oHf, and Nb-64.7a/oTi-7.2a/oTa superconducting alloys. Jc properties for 8–12 T in these alloy superconductors under superfluid helium environments can be even superior to those in Nb3Sn at 4.2 K, when they are heavily cold-worked after final heat treatments. A temperature scaling law of the flux pinning force Fp is found to hold for these alloys in the form of FP=K [Bc2(T)]nbp(1−b)q, where Bc2 is the upper critical field and b≡B/Bc2. The peak reduced field, bm, in the Fp−b curve depends upon how the alloys have been processed. The origins of n, p, and q are discussed in terms of the processing condition.

Notes: Summary Determination of Calcium in Chlor-alkali Brine by Flow Injection Analysis A few milligrams of calcium in one liter of chlor-alkali brine were determined by flow injection analysis. When the calcium content was lower, the preconcentration and separation of calcium from sodium chloride with a chelating resin column was employed. The flow injection analysis was based on the exchange reaction between calcium and zinc complex of ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)tetraacetic acid (EGTA) in the presence of 2-(3,5-dibromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-[N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)amino]phenol(H2R): $$Ca^{2 + } + Zn(EGTA) + 2R \rightleftharpoons ZnR_2 + Ca(EGTA)$$ . Calcium (0.25–2.0 mg 1−1 in the presence of magnesium, iron(III), aluminum, copper(II), nickel, phosphate, chloride, sulfate and carbonate can be determined with a sampling rate of 40 h−1.

Notes: Abstract The effect of intraperitoneal administration of α-fluoromethylhistidine (α-FMH), a specific inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, at a dose of 100 mg/kg twice a day for 6 weeks on the sensitivity of histamine receptors in the guinea-pigs was examined. The histamine contents in the ileum, heart and brain after the treatment decreased to about 54%, 83% and 9–62% (depending on the region), respectively, of those of controls. However, there were no significant difference in the histamine-induced contraction of the ileum and atrium, the maximal binding (Bmax) and the dissociation constant (Kd) of [3H]-mepyramine binding to membrane fractions of the ileum and brain (except the cortex) and the increase of cyclic AMP formation induced by histamine in membranes of the heart and brain (except the cortex) between α-FMH-treated- and untreated animals. These results suggest that long-term histamine depletion dose not significantly affect the sensitivity of histamine receptors of guinea-pig except in the brain cortex.

Notes: Abstract The existence of a histidine decarboxylase (HDC)-immunoreactive diencephalo-spinal pathway in the rat was demonstrated using an antiserum raised against HDC from fetal rat liver. HDC-immunoreactive nerve cell bodies were numerous in the ventral and lateral caudal hypothalamus. More caudally, in the mesencephalon, no cell bodies were observed but fairly many, transversely cut nerve fibres, were found in association with the fasiculus longitudinalis medialis bilaterally. At the most caudal medullary level, these longitudinally passing fibres became displaced ventrally to a position just laterally to the pyramidal decussation. In the spinal cord the fibres were more dispersed and rather sparse in most areas. The existence of a diencephalo-spinal HDC-immunoreactive pathway was verified by analyzing material from rats which had received injections of the retrograde fluorescent tracer True Blue into the cervical spinal cord. True Blue fluorescence and HDC immunofluorescence were found to coexist in a subpopulation of the HDC-immunoreactive neurones in the hypothalamus.

Notes: Summary Histamine antagonists were infused into the third ventricle of the cerebrum in rats. All the H1-, but none of the H2-antagonists tested, induced initial feeding during the early portion of the light phase when histamine level was highest. No periprandial drinking was observed. Ambulation increased during feeding. The effect on feeding was attenuated when brain histamine was normally low during the early portion of the dark phase, or was decreased by α-fluoromethylhistidine. Hypothalamic neuronal histamine may suppress food intake through H1-receptors, and diurnal fluctuations of food intake may mirror neuronal histamine levels.

Notes: Summary To detect unruptured intracranial aneurysms, we performed cerebral angiography in five patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) who had no neurological deficits and no history of subarachnoid haemorrhage. Three of the five patients had unruptured intracranial aneurysms and two underwent surgery with no mortality or morbidity. Our review of the literature revealed that the surgical risk of unruptured intracranial aneurysms is smaller than the risk of bleeding in conservatively treated patients. We discuss the importance of an early diagnosis, and early operation for unruptured aneurysms in patients with polycystic kidney disease and stress the need for intensive care for their renal dysfunction and hypertension during and after the operation.
