Notes: Abstract The efficiency of chlorine evolution from dilute brines (0.5–0.1m) was studied on RuO2 and IrO2 coated Ti anodes at 20°C and 70°C. Efficiencies are generally much higher than on graphite electrodes. However at low current densities at 70°C the efficiency on RuO2 is considerably lower than on IrO2.

Notes: Abstract Anodic or cathodic processes in which protons are released or consumed, respectively, lead to local pH changes at the electrode surface. The phenomenon is important in several branches of metal finishing, in corrosion, electro-organic synthesis and other branches of applied electrochemistry, as well as being a factor which can invalidate mechanistic investigations. The concept of ‘pHs’ (near-surface pH) is examined, as are the experimental techniques which have been used to measure it. Many of these are inherently weak. Published results are shown to be largely discrepant, both in respect of the magnitude of the effect and even its incidence. Attempts to treat the phenomenon theoretically are briefly summarized.

Notes: Abstract The electrodeposition of copper-silver and copper-nickel powders from aqueous ammoniacal solutions at a continuously scraped rotating cylinder cathode is described. Ag-Cu powders can be prepared under these conditions, but the individual particles are inhomogeneous and the extent of this inhomogeneity is examined. Surface areas (from BET) and particle size distributions are reported, and the morphology is considered. Cu-Ni powders deposited under these conditions are heavily contaminated with oxide/ hydroxides and this is attributed to an increase in near-cathode pH.

Notes: Summary The action of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs indomethacin, tiaprofenic acid, diclofenac and meclofenamate on vascular and plateletcyclooxygenases was studied by measuring the arachidonic acid-induced thromboxane A2 (TXA2)-formation of washed human platelets and prostacyclin (PGI2)-formation of bovine coronary artery rings. TXA2 was bioassayed as RCS on rabbit aorta strips, PGI2 in terms of its antiaggregatory activity on ADP-induced aggregation of human platelet-rich plasma. All of the substances studied produced concentration-dependent inhibition of PGI2- and RCS-release. The IC50 [μM] in inhibition of RCS-formation was 0.019 for indomethacin, 0.070 for tiaprofenic acid but 44.9 for meclofenamate and 63.2 for diclofenac. The IC50 [μM] in inhibition of PGI2-release was 0.42 for diclofenac, 0.63 for indomethacin and 0.99 for tiaprofenic acid. The data suggest (1) high sensitivity of human platelet-cyclooxygenase against indomethacin and tiaprofenic acid, (2) different sequence of the substances studied in inhibiting arachidonic acid-induced TXA2- and PGI2-formation. The possible therapeutic value of selective inhibition of platelets and vascular cyclooxygenases in discussed.

Notes: Abstract The water absorption of a dental silicate cement was measured both in de-ionized water and in pH controlled phosphate buffers of several ionic strengths. Uptake is found to be related to ionic strength. Water loss was studied using thermogravimetry. Water loss is seen to be a continuous process from ambient temperatures to in excess of 500° C. The implications of the findings are considered not only from a clinical viewpoint but also in relation to past reports of solubility of this material which were uncorrected for water uptake. The usefulness of the concepts of “evaporable” and “non-evaporable” water are considered and the results are examined to assess the importance of drying temperature in carrying out solubility measurements.

Notes: Abstract The author grew CdS single crystals by his own method which is described here in addition to other methods. The material was either prepared by the author or commercial luminescence-pure material was used. The amount of impurities in the commercial material was an order higher than in the author's own material. It was found that the physical properties (e.g. hole density) are worse in large single crystals than in crystals with a mosaic structure. For this reason it is thought that some of the properties are caused by stoichiometric deviations and other by defects in the crystal lattice. In this case impurification plays only a secondary role.

Notes: Abstract Dislocation etching of GaSe single crystals was investigated by using a dilute chromic-sulphuric acid mixture, when conical etch pits were revealed on the (0001) surfaces. At the apices of spiral growth hills, bunches of spiral dislocations were revealed, proving that it is not a single screw dislocation of large Burgers vector, but a bunch of co-operating screw dislocations that were responsible for the spiral growth formations of large step-height. In the case of GaSe crystals, grown by vapour transport methods, dislocation densities of 102 to 106 cm−2 were found. The Bridgman crystals investigated were completely free from non-basal dislocations.
