    Notizen: Abstract The trajectories of para-and ferromagnetic particles with velocities between 0.04 and 2.5 cm s−1 have been investigated in an HGMS model system with axial configuration. A single-wire system has been observed by a TV system. The trajectories were compared with the ideal (inviscid flow) and laminar (viscous flow) model. The results agree with laminar flow model.

    Notizen: Abstract The free-electron concentration as a function of the temperature is analyzed differentially for silicon with oxygen-related donors formed by annealing at 430 °C. The analysis yields defect levels atE c−0.25 eV,E c−0.14eV, andE c−0.055 eV assuming the degeneracy factors to be unity. The corresponding defect level concentrations are approximately proportional to the annealing time. Their formation rates are between 1 and 3×1010cm−3s−1 at 430 °C annealing temperature.

    Notizen: Abstract In three groups of patients levels of cefotaxime in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were determined. Therapeutic value and efficacy are discussed in meningitis patients. Nine concentrations of cefotaxime in lumbar and ventricular CSF out of 19 in a group of seven neurosurgical patients with mild to moderate impairment of the blood-CSF-barrier were higher than 0.5 μg/ml. In seven determinations in a second group of six patients with no or very little dysfunction of the blood-cerebrospinal-fluid barrier only twice cefotaxime was not detectable in lumbar CSF. Concentrations of cefotaxime in 25 determinations of lumbar or ventricular CSF in six patients with bacterial meningitis ranged from 1.1 μg/ml to 19.2 μg/ml. Treatment with cefotaxime alone was successful in a patient withE. coli meningitis and ventriculitis after infection of a ventriculo-atrial shunt and in another patient with pneumococcal meningitis and penicillin allergy. The other four patients with bacterial meningitis were treated successfully by antibiotics including cefotaxime.

    Notizen: Summary The activity of the liver enzymes G6Pase, G6PDH and ME was studied in rats of 2–9 weeks old by histochemical means. In addition, G6PDH and ME activity was quantitatively determined in homogenates. In the 2nd and 3rd week G6Pase is similarly distributed in both sexes: while in the periportal zone high activity is demonstrable, the perivenous zone shows only low activity. After this period a nearly homogeneous distribution pattern becomes evident in all animals. Sex difference occurs after the 6th week: in the livers of male rats the periportal “maximum” is sometimes combined with a second peak in the perivenous area, in females a steep gradient emerges with high activity in the periportal zone and a low one in the perivenous zone. In the first postnatal weeks G6PDH activity is very low in parenchymal cells, but very prominent in Kupffer cells. Around the 5th week there is an increase, predominantly in the perivenous zone of both sexes. While there is again a further decrease demonstrable in male rats, the G6PDH activity of female rats rises to high adult values. This increase seems to be restricted to the perivenous zone. ME can be demonstrated at first in leucocytes. In the course of the 3rd week there is an increase of activity in both sexes: ME is demonstrable in parenchymal cells of the perivenous area and in scattered hepatocytes of the periportal area. In male rats, the perivenous activity is diminished towards the end of the investigation period, in females, however, a high activity remains in the perivenous zone. The data show that in females the activity of NADP dependent enzymes is high in the perivenous zone, so it may be assumed that a lipogenic area is situated around the terminal efferent vessels. Because of the sex difference this area may be hormone-dependent. The lipogenic area is situated opposite to the gluco(neo)genic area which corresponds to the periportal zone.

    Notizen: Abstract The dominant suppressor Su(var)b 101 and the dominant enhancer En(var)c 101 were found to affect significantly white variegation in a strongly variegating line of the w m4 chromosome (w m4h ) which has been used as standard rearrangement for a genetic dissection of position-effect variegation (Reuter and Wolff, 1981). Both mutations were also shown to affect position-effect heterochromatisation in T(1;4)w m258-21 and variegation in all the rearrangements tested (white, brown, scute and bobbed variegation). These results suggest that the genes identified encode functions essential for the manifestation of gene inactivation in position-effect rearrangements. It seems also reasonable to assume that in all the rearrangements tested identical heterochromatisation processes lead to inactivation of the genes whose phenotype is variegated.

    Notizen: Summary A total of 437 acute psychiatric inpatients were investigated with the help of a questionnaire containing DSM-III diagnostic criteria for schizotypal as well as for borderline personality disorder and criteria of the Flexible System for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. All patients were also independently diagnosed according to the ICD-9. The clinical ICD-9 diagnoses were compared with the diagnoses given on the basis of the three operational criteria sets mentioned. Patients fulfilling the operational criteria for schizotypal personality disorder were clinically diagnosed as mostly schizophrenic, and there was also a considerable overlap between the two groups of patients, those fulfilling the operational criteria for schizotypal personality disorder and those fulfilling the criteria of the Flexible System for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. Schizotypal personality disorder does not seem to be a clinical entity in the sense of a traditional personality disorder. The majority of patients diagnosed as borderline personality disorder received a clinical diagnosis of a personality disorder. The DSM-III criteria of borderline personality disorder discriminated satisfactorily against schizophrenia as diagnosed by the Flexible System and as diagnosed according to ICD-9. On the other hand, there was no relationship between the borderline personality disorder diagnosis and any single of the ICD-9 personality disorder types. The patients fulfilling the criteria of the borderline personality disorder were equally distributed across all ICD-9 personality disorder types. They were also significantly younger than both the non-borderline and the ICD-9 personality disorder patients. The relationship between borderline personality disorder criteria and age might thus be of a greater relevance than the relationship between these criteria and a clinical type.

    Notizen: Abstract An investigation was made of the sensitivity and specificity of four-layer radio-immunoassays (RIA) in the detection of adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus types A and B, as well as para-influenza virus types 1, 2 and 3 from nasopharyngeal aspirates of 146 patients with acute respiratory disease. The sensivity of RIA was comparable with that of tissue culture isolation if the total number of positives is considered. The difference may have been caused both by a higher efficiency of the RIA for detection of inactivated or non-cultivable agents and by a higher efficiency of tissue culture methods if the samples contained only small amounts of antigen. Differences between the two antigen detection systems were found in particular with respiratory syncytial virus and influenza B virus. At present, the use of tissue culture isolation together with RIA is the optimal routine laboratory procedure for the diagnosis of respiratory infections.
