Notes: Summary In a cooperative adjuvant chemotherapy study of osteosarcoma (COSS-80), 192 patients were registered from December 1979 to March 1982. Fortyone patients have been excluded from study because of their nonadjuvant situation, therapy-limiting clinical conditions, or inadequate diagnosis. One hundred and fifty-one patients have been randomized to receive either the drug combination bleomycin+cyclophosphamide+dactinomycin (BCD) or cisplatinum (CPL) within a course of sequential multidrug chemotherapy including adriamycin (ADR) and high dose methotrexate (HDMTX). After exclusion of 51 patients with some deviation in history and/or management 100 selected patients were randomized once more to receive in addition or not fibroblast interferon after preoperative chemotherapy and surgical removal of the primary tumor. Patients were stratified for age and sex and for site and extension of tumor as well in both randomizations. Median follow up is now 12 (1–16) months. The expected 2-year disease free survival (DFS) rate of the total doubly randomized group is 78% and of the single randomized group 76%. No difference could be discerned between recombined groups receiving BCD vs CPL or interferon vs no interferon. The effect of preoperative chemotherapy on the tumor was evaluated clinically and by histopathologic grading; 66/85 (78%) patients were judged clinically as responders with pathohistologic verification of this finding in 71% of these cases. No adverse effect arose from delaying definite surgery for preoperative chemotherapy, but initial application of chemotherapy as well as planning, preparing, and performing of the surgical procedure have been facilitated. The majority of patients received some kind of limb-salvage treatment without local recurrences so far. A statistically insignificant but intriguing tendency for a slightly higher incidence of pulmonary metastases after resection as opposed to amputation could be detected. Similar to observations in the previous study COSS-77.

Notes: Summary Twelve osteosarcomas treated according to the COSS 80 protocol (preoperative chemotherapy, resection) were studied by light and electron microscopic, histochemical, and autoradiographic methods. Evidence of regressive and necrotic changes was found in many tumor cells, but the alterations were unspecific. Viable tumor cells of high malignancy were also observed regularly, often at the S phase. As the tumor regression continued, a strong reaction of the mononuclear phagocyte system was manifested by the presence of macrophages and giant cells.

Notes: Summary Rapidly fatal acute monocytic leukemia occurred in an 11-year-old boy 33 months after the beginning of irradiation and chemotherapy for nonmetastatic pelvic Ewing's sarcoma. At autopsy, no recurrent primary disease was seen. An analysis of this case together with a review of the literature suggests therapy-related leukemogenesis. Thus, the decline in mortality rate for childhood cancer may be accompanied by an increased incidence of second neoplasms in cured children having the potential of a normal life span.

Notes: Abstract Tensile strength data of fused silica optical fibres was analysed without making any a priori assumptions regarding the flaw density distribution. Based on the strength data of short length specimens (0.05 to 0.6 m), predictions of the strengths of long length specimens (500 to 1100 m) were in good agreement with actual data. The advantages of a fundamental approach to the statistical analysis of failure of optical glass fibres compared with the more widely used Weibull statistics are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The fatigue behaviour of a polymer-coated fibre and a silicon oxynitride-coated fibre was measured in water between 25 and 90° C by the dynamic fatigue test technique where strength is measured as a function of stressing rate. The results are analysed in terms of stress corrosion theory. It was found that the silicon oxynitride coating reduced fatigue significantly, but caused a large reduction in strength of the fibre. The implications of these results to the design of optical fibre communication cables, where a high reliability must be assured, is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary (1) The loss of hair cells after pure tone exposure at the critical level of intensity shows an exact correlation to the frequency, the time of sound exposure, and time of recovery as regards the quality and quantity. (2) The total extent of the damage of sensory cells has to be estimated higher than the hair-cell loss as observed under the light microscope. Although an improvement of the function of the organ of Corti was determined electrophysiologically from the 5th to the 10th day of recovery, the hair-cell degeneration was progredient during this period. (3) The hair-cell damage is apically more strongly marked from the area of damage than basically. (4) Depending on the experimental conditions there are considerable degenerative alterations in the nerve fibres and in the connective apparatus of the organ of Corti besides hair-cell losses and damages.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract The effectiveness of proof testing as a method of improving component reliability was studied by comparing strength distributions of soda-lime-silica glass before and after proof testing. The effects of unloading rate from the proof stress, hold time at the proof stress, and proof test environment were examined. The results indicate that the proof test must be conducted with rapid unloading rates and good environmental control to be effective. The theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Theoretical estimates are made of strength distributions after proof testing. Assuming that the crack velocity can be expressed as a power function of the stress intensity factor,v=AK I n , an analysis of the amount of strength loss during a load cycle is presented for single-region crack propagation. For multi-region crack propagation, a numerical analysis is used to describe strength loss. In both analyses, the effects of environment and loading rate are studied. For single region crack propagation, the strength after proof testing can be represented by two Weibull curves: one with a slope ofm at high cumulative failure probability levels; the other with a slope ofn–2 at low failure probability levels. Truncation of the strength distribution always occurs as the result of proof testing; the truncation strength depends on the rate of unloading. Multi-region crack propagation results in a more complicated strength distribution after proof testing. Bimodal strength distributions occur as a consequence of region II type crack growth (i.e.n=0). Theoretical results confirm experimental findings that proof tests must be conducted at rapid unloading rates and with good environmental control to be effective.
