Notes: We observed the presence of the novel pituitary protein „7B2” and its release in the bovine adrenal medulla. The 7B2 concentration (mean ± SEM) in extracts of the bovine adrenal medulla was 952 ± 155 pg/mg tissue (n = 6). 7B2 was distributed in the chromaffin granule fraction prepared from the bovine adrenal medulla and was released by high K+ and/or nicotine from cultured cells of the bovine adrenal medulla. Co-release of 7B2 with catecholamine induced by nicotine from the cultured bovine chromaffin cells was also observed. In an analysis of the bovine adrenal medulla chromaffin granule fraction on gel permeation chromatography, there was a major peak with an apparent molecular weight of 45,000, whereas a major peak with an apparent molecular weight of 20,000 was found in that on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. On reverse-phase HPLC, a major peak with a retention time of 35 min was observed in the bovine chromaffin granule fraction and in the bovine anterior pituitary extract. These findings indicate that 7B2 is a secretory protein in the bovine adrenal medulla. The possibility that 7B2 might be released with catecholamine, possibly in response to stress, warrants investigation.

Notes: LiClO4⋅3H2O has been found to be 90° phase-matchable for ultraviolet generation at 0.2660 μm at a crystal temperature of 30.6 °C. A peak power as high as 28 MW with an average power of 2.2 W was obtained in a 1.5-cm-long crystal. Sellmeier's equations and nonlinear constant of this crystal are reported. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We evaluated the magnitude of broadening factors of ground-state exciton absorption peaks in In1−xGaxAsyP1−y/InP (x=0.47y) multiple quantum wells (MQW's) with about 10 nm wells. The absorption peaks broadened with a decrease of y. Analyzing the absorption peak broadening with increasing temperature, the thermal broadening factor at 300 K was found to be about 9 meV and composition independent. Analyzing the photoluminescence linewidth at 4.2 K, it was found that composition fluctuations in the well caused an inhomogeneity of the exciton energy level of 4.4 meV for the y=1.0 MQW and 7.5 meV for the y=0.6 MQW, being the greatest contributors to inhomogeneous broadening. We conclude that the exciton absorption peak broadening with a decrease of y is primarily due to the increase of composition fluctuations.

Notes: Electron cyclotron emission measured vertically through the center of a tokamak plasma yields detailed information about the electron velocity distribution. A diagnostic developed for this purpose on Alcator C tokamak uses specialized focusing optics to obtain a well-collimated viewing chord, a compact viewing dump made of Pyrex or Macor to reduce the effects of wall reflection and depolarization, and a rapid-scan polarizing Michelson interferometer InSb detector system for the spectrum measurement; all constrained by the limited access and the compact size of Alcator C. Results of diffraction analysis are used to evaluate the theoretical performance of the optical system.

Notes: Compact, vacuum-compatible submillimeter viewing dumps, whose design parameters were based on the results of simple ray calculations, have been fabricated from Pyrex, Macor, and alumina. The measured performance of the dumps agrees qualitatively with calculated results. The absorption is somewhat lower than expected, but still acceptable (≥99% absorption for Pyrex and Macor). In an electron cyclotron plasma emission experiment on Alcator C tokamak, comparison of the emission spectra with and without the dump shows that the dump in this configuration is effective in suppressing the unwanted radiation by approximately 90%. The additional reflection is believed to be due to a portion of the antenna pattern missing the dump.

Notes: Nonthermal electron distribution functions, arising during lower hybrid heating and current drive, have been measured on Alcator C tokamak using vertical electron cyclotron emission and also bremsstrahlung x-ray emission. The methods used for deconvolving the distribution from the radiation measurements are summarized and examples are given of results from different types of plasma, illustrating the present capabilities of the techniques. The cyclotron emission results are consistent with the x-ray analysis but provide additional information, particularly at lower energies (30–100 keV). The x rays are less ambiguous at high energy and give good forward/backward asymmetry diagnosis. The quality of information appears to be already adequate for a quantitative comparison with theory, but further experimental improvements seem possible.

Notes: In the Fock–Bargmann space, the complete harmonic-oscillator basis for the three-cluster system is constructed. The indices of the reduction U(6)&supuline;U(2)×U(3) are chosen as the quantum numbers. The Pauli-forbidden states are eliminated by the orthogonal transformation of basis functions. The basis states are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions and the spherical Wigner functions. Their simple form allows one to solve the problem of calculating the matrix elements of the microscopic Hamiltonian needed for the study of three-cluster systems within the algebraic version of RGM. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An AlGaN/GaInN heterostructure has been fabricated by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. We observed room-temperature (RT) violet stimulated emission from an optically pumped double heterostructure (DH) using GaInN as an active layer. The peak wavelength of the stimulated emission at RT from Al0.17Ga0.83N/Ga0.91In0.09N DH is 402.5 nm, and the threshold of excitation power density is about 0.13 MW/cm2.

Notes: A technique for measuring negative-ion density in high-density plasmas used for materials processing has been developed; negative ions were detected by measuring the electron-density perturbation caused by laser photodetachment using a millimeter-wave open resonator. The measured negative-ion density for an inductively-coupled C4F8(5%–20%)/Ar plasma with electron densities around 1011 cm−3 at a pressure of 25 mTorr was comparable to the electron density. The results suggest that species produced via dissociation of C4F8 attaches electrons as effectively as C4F8. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
