Notes: We describe results from highly charged ion extraction experiments at the Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) facility which is now operated at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory after transfer from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Requirements on ion source performance for the application of highly charged ions (e.g., Xe44+) in surface analysis and materials science are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure of liquid water in contact with a metallic planar wall is calculated for the central force water model which is a stoichiometric mixture of partially charged hydrogen and oxygen atoms interacting via effective spherical pair potentials. The density profiles near the wall are obtained from the Wertheim–Lovett–Mou–Buff equation where the bulk information enters through the direct correlation functions. In this approach image interactions which are characteristic for a metallic boundary, and which cannot be treated as a simple particle–wall interaction are considered within a mean-field ansatz. We discuss the structural properties of the interface layer for both cases, the charged and the uncharged wall, and compare the results to those for an unpolarizable boundary where the image forces have been switched off. The differential capacitance as function of the wall charge is seen to show a characteristic "hump" which can be related to the transition between two possible icelike water structures in front of the wall. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background  True local recurrence (LR) means clinically detectable regrowth of parts of the tumour which were not completely excised. In the literature the term ‘LR’ has been used in a vague and inconsistent manner that may include satellite and in-transit metastasis. Objective  The aim of this study was to establish clinical, histological and surgical risk factors for the manifestation of LR and to evaluate the prognostic significance of LR.Study design  Data from 3960 Stage I and II melanoma patients who visited the melanoma clinic of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Tuebingen from 1980 to 1999 were documented in a prospective manner. A retrospective comparative analysis of patients with and without LR was performed. Results  Of all patients 1·4% had a LR as a first recurrence and 1·7% had a LR in the course of the follow-up period. LR were most frequent after previous clinical or histological misdiagnosis and inadequate therapy. In the univariate analysis significant risk factors for LR-free survival were age, tumour surface area, locality, tumour thickness, level of invasion, histological type, associated naevus, surgery (one step vs. multiple steps) and compliance with recommended excision margins. In the multivarate analysis the factors locality (P 〈 0·0001), tumour thickness (P = 0·0086) and compliance with recommendations on excision margins (P = 0·014) were significant independent risk factors for the manifestation of LR. The overall survival of patients with LR as first progression did not significantly differ from the overall survival of the other patients with melanoma (P = 0·60).Conclusion  True LR is a rare event for which tumour locality, tumour thickness and surgery are independent risk factors. The occurrence of LR might not impair the prognosis of melanoma patients. However, in the published literature numerous definitions of ‘LR’, including lymphogenic metastasis, complicate comparison.

Notes: Background: This study assessed the hypothesis that a decreased exposure to childhood infectious diseases is associated with signs and symptoms of ‘atopic’ hypersensitivity diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed among 1368 Spanish and German first-year university students between 1997 and 1999, including self-administered questionnaire data and serological tests. Results: No association between the disease outcomes and hepatitis A, Helicobacter pylori infection and herpes simplex infection was observed in logistic regression analyses, adjusting for potential confounders (centre, sex, smoking, parental education). In contrast, vaccination against hepatitis B was associated with a decreased risk for the outcomes allergic rhinitis (OR 0.63, 95% CI: 0.42–0.95) and total serum IgE above 100 U/ml (OR 0.56, 95% CI: 0.39–0.81). Conversely, seropositivity to HBc antigen was significantly associated with high total serum IgE (OR 2.04, 95% CI: 1.34–3.06).Conclusions: Our study partly confirmed and partly contradicted previous evidence and hypotheses, respectively, concerning the role of the infections considered. The observation of a decreased risk in persons vaccinated against hepatitis B warrants further, prospective investigation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the winter of 1972/73 the rank-order of individually marked roe deer at an artificial feeding site was studied in the foothills of eastern Switzerland. The observed rank-order was almost linear and more or less stable throughout the winter. The only drops in rank were caused by casting of antlers and impairment through injury, whereas cleaning of antlers raised a buck's rank. Adult bucks dominated all other classes, and male fawns dominated almost all females The effects of age, antler size, distance from summer territory, and duration of stay in the feeding site area on rank were tested by rank correlations. In adult bucks, only distance from summer territory affected rank significantly, bucks from the vicinity being the most dominant. This result and the fact that the dominant bucks, who alone showed marking behaviour, were the most aggressive, suggest that roebucks are potentially territorial also in winter. Does were the higher in rank the earlier they were first observed visiting the feeding site, i.e. the more familiar they were with it. The rank of females was not affected by age. Occupied piles of food were sometimes successfully defended against higher ranking individuals.

Notes: Summary The variation in immune responses to standard inoculation of the hepatitis-B virus vaccine suggest that host factors influence response in ways that are not presently understood. We studied 25 low/nonresponding health care workers (anti-HBs titer 〈50 IU/l) after the third inoculation of an experimental hepatitis-B vaccine to determine their immune status (through lymphocyte phenotypes) and HLA type. After application of a fourth inoculation, the seroconverting subjects showed only low anti-HBs levels; three male subjects remained anti-HBs negative. Twelve months after the fourth inoculation only 9 of 25 subjects (36%) maintained anti-HBs titer 〉10 IU/l. Almost all subjects had normal B-cell and CD-4 and CD-8 counts and ratios. Relative to other European populations HLA-A-10 (P〈0.05), B-12 (P〈0.025), CW-5 (P〈0.05), DR-3 (P〈0.025), and DR-5 (P〈0.025) were increased, whereas DR-2 (P〈0.05) was decreased. However, after correction of theP-values for the number of HLA antigens determined, these differences were no longer significant. Furthermore, these HLA types were not the same as those reported in other studies (except for DR-3). We suggest that larger sample sizes or even not yet available immunogenetic markers will be required to prove an “immunogenetic background” in low/nonresponders, if it exists.

Notes: Summary We investigated the ability of urinary neopterin concentrations and T-cell subset data, and their ratios to discriminate between anti-HIV-1 seronegatives, seropositives, and AIDS cases. Using receiver-operated-characteristics curves, neopterin levels were shown to provide the best discrimination. Of the ratios derived from the single variables, neopterin per CD4+ cell counts and neopterin per CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio were superior to the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio. Multivariate analyses were performed using a generalized likelihood ratio approach as well as linear discriminant analysis. The combination of neopterin concentration and CD4+ T-cell count is well suited to discriminate between various stages of HIV-1 infection and, therefore, we recommend using more than one assay to evaluate disease progression.
