Description / Table of Contents:
The mechanism of metal oxidation at high temperaturesAfter a short introduction on the mechanism of the oxidation of metals with compact and pore-free oxide layers governed by rate-determining diffusion processes through the oxide layer (parabolic rate law), the deviation due to the rate determining phase-boundary reactions is discussed (linear rate law). Because of the technical importance of zirconium as reactor material, especially, the oxidation of zirconium is of predominant interest. The oxidation, however, is rather complicated due to the high solubility of oxygen in the metal and the strong temperature dependence of the oxygen-iron partial conductivity in the ZeO2 layer. A clear answer on the influence of the neutron and the γ-flux on the oxidation rate is not yet available.Subsequently, the mechanism of inner oxidation and of the oxidation of carbides and carbon-containing alloys is discussed. The paper is concluded by a report on phenomena similiar to passivity during the oxidation of liquid silicon and, furthermore, on the influence of exchange reaction on the selective formation of oxide layers.
Notes:
