Notes: Abstract  Immunosuppressants cyclosporin A (CsA), FK506, and KM2210 modulated colony formations of murine hematopoietic progenitor cells. In a 4-h treatment with CsA, 10 μg/ml increased the formation of colony-forming units of mixed lineages (CFU-Mix) but decreased the formation of highly proliferative potential colony-forming units (CFU-HPP); 1 μg/ml of CsA increased the formations of CFU-HPP, CFU-Mix, and colony-forming units of granulocytes/macrophages (CFU-GM); 0.1 μg of CsA increased the formation of CFU-Mix and burst-forming units of erythroid lineage (BFU-E). Lower doses of CsA appeared to induce an increase in various colony formations. FK506 increased CFU-HPP and CFU-Mix formations at lower doses. Another immunosuppressant, KM2210, increased CFU-HPP and CFU-GM formations but decreased CFU-Mix and BFU-E formations. In a 24-h treatment, 10 μg/ml and 1 μg/ml of CsA inhibited all the colony formations, but 0.1 μg/ml of CsA increased CFU-Mix, CFU-GM, and BFU-E formations. Similarly, 100 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml of FK506 decreased all the colony formations but 1 ng/ml of FK506 increased CFU-HPP and CFU-GM formations. KM2210 inhibited all the colony formations. These findings showed that lower doses of CsA and FK506 appeared to increase the colony formations, although higher doses of these drugs decreased the colony formations, similar to the findings in a 4-h treatment. On the other hand, KM2210 showed opposing effects on colony formation with 4-h and 24-h treatments.

Notes: Abstract We present the calculation of surface electromagnetic radiation to all orders from a spatially modulated, oscillating dipole layer sandwiched between two dielectric media. The results properly include the macroscopic local field factors. In specular reflection direction, we show that the total radiation is partitioned into a term which is the zeroth-order counterpart to the higher-order diffraction and a term related only to the properties of two adjoining bulk media. The results unify the calculations by Shen and Heinz and McIntyre [1, 6, 7]

Notes: Abstract Deep inelastic collisions in light systems formed with12C,14N and16O projectiles and different target nuclei have been studied at incident energies between 5 and 7 MeV/u. A detailed analysis is presented for the results of the16O+27Al reaction at 80.6 MeV incident energy which is based on trajectory calculations and the transport theory. The questions of angular distributions and the interaction time, the energy dissipation and the fragment deformation as well as the element-distribution and the effect of the nuclear structure are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Using interfacial force microscopy (IFM), we investigated the tribological behavior of hexadecanethiol monolayers on Au and films of octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS), perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS) and dodecane on Si. We observe a strong correlation between hysteresis in a compression cycle (measured via nanoindentation) and friction. Additionally, we suggest that the amount of hysteresis and friction in each film is related to its detailed molecular structure, especially the degree of molecular packing.

Notes: Strong intraparticle diffusion resistance was observed and the apparent effectiveness factors were measured for the hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropanal (HPA) to 1,3-propanediol (PD) over Ni/SiO2/Al2O3 catalyst pellets at 45 to 80°C and 2.60 to 5.15 MPa in a stirred reactor with a spinning basket. A mathematical model was proposed to describe the intraparticle diffusion and to estimate the effective diffusion coefficients of HPA, PD and hydrogen under reaction conditions by a maximum likelihood function of the apparent effectiveness factors of HPA and PD. The calculated concentration distributions of HPA, PD and hydrogen in catalyst particles reveal an excess of hydrogen at 80°C and higher temperatures, but an excess of HPA at 45°C. It results in a weak dependence of the consumption formation rate of HPA and PD on the partial pressure of hydrogen at high temperature.

Notes: Polymers of methacrylate and methacrylamide derivatives of cholic acid were prepared by free radical polymerization in solution. To verify the stereoisomeric effect of the monomeric units, certain properties of the resulting polymers were compared, including conversion rate, molecular weight, and glass transition temperature. The 3β-epimers of the methacrylates and methacrylamides are to polymerize more easily than the 3α-epimers. Water absorption experiments showed that the methacrylamide polymers are more hydrophilic than the methacrylate polymers and that the polymers from the 3β-epimers have higher hydrophilicity than those made from the 3α-epimers. The free acid forms of the polymers were also prepared by selective hydrolysis of the methyl ester group of the cholic acid moiety which resulted in improved hydrophilicity of the polymers.
