Notes: Abstract An extended level scheme of109Sn is presented showing high-spin states up to Ex≈ 8 MeV and spins up toJπ=(41/2+). Their decay to the 5/2+ ground state has been observed identifying a 12.8 keV 7/2+ → 5/2+ transition. A half-life of T1/2=7(1) ns has been measured for the 17/2+ state atE x =2114 keV. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of shell-model calculations.

Notes: Abstract The neutron deficient nuclei98Ag,104Sn withT z =2 and103In,105Sn (T z=5/2) were studied in-beam following the reaction of 250 MeV58Ni+50Cr. Neutron and charged particle (p, α) gatedγγ-coincidence spectra were used to identify these nuclei, which are populated with yields between 0.05% and 2% of the total residue cross section, and to determine their level schemes. In a comprehensive shell model study various approaches for the residual interaction were used to describe these newly and several previously studied neutron deficient nuclei. As a result predictions for the neutron single particle energies for100Sn are obtained and used to discuss the next generation of experiments.

Notes: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopic (RIMS) measurements for trace analysis and spectroscopy of 237Np, the ecologically most important isotope of neptunium, are described. The chemical procedure for the separation of neptunium from aqueous samples as well as the preparation of filaments for RIMS are outlined. Several two- and three-step excitation schemes have been investigated in order to find suitable conditions for the sensitive detection of 237Np. Using a three-step, three-color excitation and ionization scheme an overall detection efficiency of 3×10−8 was obtained, resulting in a detection limit of 4×108 atoms (160 fg) of 237Np. The hyperfine structure splittings of the levels under investigation, which influence the detection limit, were measured. A new method to determine the first ionization potential (IP) was applied to neptunium yielding a value of IP=6.2655(2) eV.

Notes: Abstract We report here on the development of a high-temperature laser ion source useful for trace analysis and other applications. It consists of a high temperature ionization chamber, three tunable dye lasers pumped by copper vapor lasers for stepwise resonant ionization and a Mattauch-Herzog mass spectrometer for the analysis of photo-ions. The principle of the laser ion source and its theoretical efficiency are discussed, where the efficiency of a laser ion source is the ratio of photo-ions extracted out to the number of atoms introduced into the cavity. Experimentally, an efficiency of 2×10−3 has been achieved for technetium. The scheme of gated detection is described which is used for suppressing isobaric background of molybdenum. The possible improvements are briefly mentioned for achieving isotopic analysis of 108 atoms of 97,98Tc in the presence of 1015 atoms of molybdenum, as separated chemically from molybdenum ore. Such an analysis of technetium isotopes produced in molybdenite ore by a (v,e −) reaction, is expected to yield information about the solar neutrino flux.

Notes: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined for ultrasensitive detection and spectroscopy of very small samples of refractive elements. The method has been tested and applied to laser spectroscopy of 5×109 atoms (1.5 pg) of195Au (T 1/2= 183d) implanted at the ISOLDE online mass separator with 60 keV into graphite. A pulsed thermal atomic beam was formed by laser desorption with a 10 ns Nd∶Yag laser pulse. Subsequently the atoms were photoionized in a three-colour, three-step resonant excitation to an autoionizing state. The selectivity was enhanced by a time-of-flight measurement of the photo ions. In resonance, one ion was detected per 105 atoms implanted resulting in a gain in detection efficiency by three orders of magnitude in comparison to the use of a continuous atomic beam. In the course of the experiments several unknown autoionizing states were found, and the lifetime of the 6d 2 D 3/2 state of gold was determined to beτ=10.7(6) ns.

Notes: Abstract High spin states of146Gd, populated in heavyion induced reactions, have been investigated by means of in-beamγ-ray spectroscopy using the Compton-suppressed germanium detector arrays OSIRIS and ESSA30. 35 new levels and 47 new transitions could be placed in the level scheme. In addition to the extension to very high spins, a new cascade has been observed at intermediate spins.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure splitting and the isotope shift in the λ=266 nm transition of Pt isotopes within the mass range 183 ≦A≦ 198 have been determined by Resonance Ionization Mass Spectroscopy (RIMS) in combination with Pulsed-Laser Induced Desorption (PLID). The Pt isotopes were obtained at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE-3/CERN as daugthers of the primarily produced Hg isotopes. Magnetic moments, quadrupole moments, and changes in the mean-square charge radii are deduced and compared with results of a particle-triaxial rotor model and mean field calculations. Good agreement with experimental data (including nuclear level schemes and transition probabilities) can only be obtained if triaxial shape is admitted. The calculations yield a smooth transition in the shape of odd-A Pt nuclei from a slightly deformed, nearly oblate195Pt via triaxial197-187Pt to a strongly deformed nearly prolate177Pt.

Notes: Abstract The neutron-deficient nuclei100,101Cd were identified for the first time in — beam following the reactions58Ni +46,48Ti and58Ni +50Cr at 230 MeV and 245 MeV bombarding energy of the58Ni beams. Theγ-decay of the isotopes100,101,102Cd was studied inpγ, ppγ,nγ, nnγ, andnγγ prompt and delayed coincidence spectra. Isomers were found with spin and half life {ie1-01}=8+, T1/2=52(5) ns in100Cd, {ie1-02}=(19/2+), T1/2=4.6(4) ns in101Cd and {ie1-03}=8+, T1/2=56(4) ns in102Cd. In a PAD experiment theg-factor of the {ie1-04}=8+ isomer in100Cd was measured to be g=1.24(6). Using the reaction36Ar +70Ge at 135 MeV energy of the36Ar beam, theg-factor and the quadrupole moment of the {ie1-05}=8+ isomer in102Cd were measured to be g=1.29(3) and Q=87(10) fm2, respectively. The spectroscopic results are discussed within a shell model approach using a100Sn core, which accounts well for the electromagnetic properties of the proton aligned isomers. The structure of the spherical neutron states, dominated by the close lying vd5/2, g7/2 orbitals, and the gradually developing quadrupole collectivity are reproduced by the shell model calculations.

Notes: Abstract Excited states of the nuclei127Xe and125Xe have been investigated in the inverse kinematic reactions48 Ca(82 Se,(3.5)n) at 275 MeV beam energy with the OSIRIS multidetector system at the VICKSI-accelerator of the HMI Berlin. The level scheme of127Xe was extended up to a level of tentative spin (51/2−). Two excited bands of 3QP-character were observed. For125Xe these structures were extended towards higher spins. Experimental Routhians of selected bands are presented.
