Notes: Abstract The critical collapse pressure of gas vesicles isolated from Anabaena flos-aquae decreased from 0.557 to 0.190 MPa when GvpC, the hydrophilic 22 kDa protein present on the outer surface of the gas vesicle, was removed by rising in 6 M urea. Recombinant GvpC was purified from inclusion bodies, produced in an E. coli strain containing an expression vector bearing the gene ecoding GvpC from A. flos-aquae, and then solubilised in 6 M urea. This recombinant GvpC became bound to gas vesicles that had been stripped of their native protein, when the urea was removed by dialysis; the amount which bound increased with the concentration of GvpC present. The critical pressure of these reconstituted gas vesicles increased to 0.533 MPa, 96% of the original value. These results indicate that the function of GvpC is to increase the strength of the structure.

Notes: Abstract The efficacy and safety of tacrolimus- and cyclosporine-based immunosuppressive regimens were compared in a prospectively defined subgroup of kidney transplant recipients from the European, open, multicentre, 2 : 1 randomised, parallel group study. Patients were stratified as high risk for immunological events if they had a panel-reactive antibodies grade greater than 80 % and/or a previous transplant functional for less than 1 year. The primary efficacy variables evaluated were the incidence of acute rejection, steroid usage and patient and graft survival. Safety was assessed based on adverse events and laboratory evaluations. At 1 year, the tacrolimus group (n = 22) had a lower incidence of biopsy-proven acute rejection (31.8 %) and a higher graft survival (86.0 %) than the 11 patients in the cyclosporine group (54.5 % and 72.0 %, respectively). The frequencies of adverse events were similar between the two groups. The tacrolimus regimen appears more beneficial for high risk patients than cyclosporine.

Notes: Abstract By optical interference and VUV spectroscopy the doublet system of SbI 5p 26s was investigated, so that now the hyperfinestructure of all 8 levels of 5p 26s (A- andB-splitting constants) are known. From the analysis we receive a spin-orbit parameter ζ5p =3,538(57) cm−1 and from the hyperfine-analysis single electron splitting constantsa 5p 01 =52.4(4.6),a 5p 10 =−1.6(7.3),a 5p 12 =72.3(2.3),a 6s 10 =91.7(4.1),b 5p 02 =−49.6(1.1) andb 5p 11 =30.4(3.2) (all values in mK). For all calculations in the fs- and hfs-analysis the 5p 26s 2 D 3/2 has to be excluded (see discussion). With the figures given above the quadrupole moment121 Q(5p 26s)=−0.44(3) barn was obtained. It is in good agreement with the121 Q(5p 3). For the core-polarization by the 5p electron in the innerfieldns-shells (n=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and the unpaired 6s electron a field of +500(300) kG was obtained.
