Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Concentrations of cobalt and calcium in the myocardium and in myocardial mitochondria of the rat were determined using neutron activation analysis. After intraperitoneal injections of a total dose of 50–60 mg CoCl2 during a period of 10–12 days the content of cobalt in the myocardium increased from normal 0.15 to 10.7 μg/g. At the same time calcium concentrations in the myocardium decreased from normal 265 to 148 μg/g. The calcium content of the mitochondria did not change. The shift in the ratio cobalt/calcium during treatment with CoCl2 may be quantitatively related to the resulting cardiac failure.
