Notes: Summary A twenty-five years old man was found to have simultaneous total deficiency of thyroxine-binding globulin (“thyropexin”) and hereditary hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). The thyroxine-binding capacity (RT3U), thyroid hormone levels, PB127I, PB131I and TBG (RIA) in serum were very low and TBG cap was zero. Trapping of radioiodine in the thyroid was enhanced. Clinically, the patient appeared euthyroid. The case seems to be similar to another one described earlier by Ingbar. An investigation of the family showed that in one uncle and two nephews of the patient thyropexin was absent whilst the mother, one sister and one female cousin had partial thyropexin deficiencies. One of these nephews also suffers from asymmetric septal hypertrophy (ASH), the mother of the propositus has a non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Notes: Summary A review of the case histories of 44 patients showed an increasing incidence of C-cell carcinoma with an increasing amount of “occult” familiary tumors diagnosed at young age. Early diagnosis is important: lymph node metastases, which occur frequently and early, are decisive with regard to prognosis. The important diagnostic methods for family screening, sporadic (palpable) tumors and follow-up are stimulation of s-calcitonin (Pentagastrin), ultrasonography, CMT and selective venous catheterization. The presence of an MEN II syndrome should be known preoperatively. Surgical strategy has to take into account the differences between sporadic and familiary tumors and early stages in the familiary form. In occult tumors total thyroidectomy should also be performed together with an appropriate lymph node dissection.

Description / Table of Contents: Deoxyribonucleic acid has been extracted from phage D4 by different techniques: compression, heating, alkalinization, etc. The corresponding aqueous solutions have been studied as functions of different physical factors (concentration, pressure temperature, pH, ionic strength, etc.) by viscometry, by flow birefringence, and by ultraviolet absorption. The biological activity of the phages in the course of these different treatments has also been determined. All the solutions studied were strongly polydispersed. For each one, the mean DNA particle length, the optical anisotropy, and the degree of polydispersion have been determined. These results have been compared to those of DNA of calf thymus. The disagreement between the particle dimensions of the phages and those of free DNA particles has been discussed, and an interpretation is proposed for the apparent contradictions.
