Notes: [Auszug] The experimental conditions were as follows. Synthetic peptide (10 mg) was added to the reaction system containing 0.2 ml. of rabbit renin1, 0.5 ml. of plasma from a normal rabbit as substrate and 2.0 ml. of 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution. The mixture was incubated at 37 C for 10 min and the ...

Notes: Abstract Purpose Several case reports indicate critical respiratory complications in relation to the double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT). A prospective survey for the airway problems in using the DLT is presented. Methods One hundred adult patients undergoing thoracotomy for lung cancer were investigated. Tube malposition and airway obstruction were searched using a fiber-optic scope. The endobronchial cuff was positioned just below the trachcal carina while the trachea was intubated with a DLT (Rüsch). The distances of displacement, from the tracheal carina to the bronchial cuff, were measured during anesthesia using an epidural catheter, which had marks every 5 mm. The distances for correcting the tube position were measured at both the bronchial cuff and the level of the teethPaO2,PaCO2 andSPO2 were also measured. Results Malposition (displacement over 5 mm from the correct position) was found in 42 patients, and 40 of them were in a withdrawal direction, occurring at the postural change and during one-lung ventilation, especially during manipulation of the lung hilum. Correcting distances at the level of the teeth were 15.3–3-times longer than those at the bronchial cuff. Airway deformities and gradual withdrawal of the bronchial cuff were found in association with surgical manipulation. Obstruction occurred at the tips of the tracheal tube in four patients and the bronchial tube in six patients, and at the tip of both in two patients. Hypoxemia (PaO2〈60 mmHg) occurred in four patients and hypercapnea (PaCO2〉60 mm Hg) in two patients. Conclusion Most of the DLT obstructions were associated with withdrawal malposition. Great attention to DLT displacement and airway deformity is advised.

Notes: Summary Batch cultures of tobacco cells induced from Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Bright Yellow-2 were carried out under oxygen-limited conditions using sucrose as the sole carbon source. Maintenance coefficients for sugar, m, and for oxygen, mO, were 0.02 mmol glucose/g cell dry weight/h and 0.09 mmol O2/g cell dry weight/h, and true growth yields for sugar, YG, and for oxygen, YGO, were 107 g cell dry weight/mol glucose and 61 g cell dry weight/mol O2, respectively. Balance equations based on electrons available from the culture suggested that the carbon-substrate consumed by the cells might be metabolized mainly in biosynthetic processes without the excretion of extracellular products.

Notes: Summary Changes in the amount of nucleic acid and nitrogen, and the relationships between these amounts and the growth rate of tobacco cells (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Bright Yellow-2) at different initial nitrogen concentrations in the medium, were examined in batch cultures. During culture in basal medium, the amount of intracellular nucleic acid expressed per unit of dry biomass was 36.3 mg RNA g−1 cell and 8.1 mg DNA g−1 cell at the beginning of batch culture. These values increased 2.5 fold for RNA and 1.5 fold for DNA during the exponential growth phase and then gradually decreased with the decline in the growth rate. Similar changes were also observed in the medium containing less nitrogen. The specific growth rate, μ (day−1), of the culture corresponded to the magnitude of the intracellular RNA content (mg RNA g−1 cell), and the linear relationship, RNA=38μ+23 was obtained. In addition, there were remarkable positive correlations between the total and protein nitrogen, and μ during the cultures. The mononucleotide composition of total RNA (AMP+UMP)/(GMP+CMP) which was suggested to be a convenient index of metabolic activity was nearly constant (0.78 to 0.80) during tobacco cell culture in the basal medium.

Notes: The effects of C3H8 on the microstructures of the films on Si (111) have beeninvestigated by changing the concentration of C3H8 from 0.5% to 5%. 3C-SiC film on Si (111)grown at the C3H8 concentration of 1% with relatively high flow rate of SiH4 (30 sccm) is singlecrystal and free from the contamination of W2C. By comparing the deposition rates of the films onSi (111) and Si (100) at different concentrations of C3H8, SiC growth on Si (111) is much moredependent on C3H8 concentration than that on Si (100). From these results it is suggested that SiCgrowth on Si (111) is strongly influenced by hydrogen radicals generated from C3H8 decompositionby the plasma and forms single crystal easier than on Si(100). It is expected that 3C-SiC epitaxialgrowth on Si (111) has higher deposition rate and lower substrate temperature than on Si (100). Thecrystallinity has been investigated by a reflection electron diffraction (RED) and a X-ray diffraction(XRD). The thickness and the surface roughness of the films were investigated by an ellipsometricmeasurement

Notes: In order to demonstrate the formation of 3C-SiC film on Si (111) at low substrate temperature, the effects of C3H8 on the crystallinity of the films on Si (111) have been investigated by changing the flow rate of C3H8 at the substrate temperature of 950 °C. Nearly single-crystalline 3C-SiC film grew under the ratio of the flow rate of C3H8 to the flow rate of SiH4 (C/Si) of 2 - 2.5. From these results, it is suggested that C/Si shifts into higher with decreasing the substrate temperature. The crystallinity has been investigated by a reflection electron diffraction (RED) and a X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thickness and the surface roughness of the films were investigated by an ellipsometric measurement

Keywords: Key words: Bronchial artery—Therapeutic embolization—Benign pulmonary diseases

Notes: Abstract Purpose: To clarify the immediate effect and long-term results of bronchial artery embolization (BAE) for hemoptysis due to benign diseases and the factors influencing the outcomes. Methods: One hundred and one patients (aged 34–89 years) received bronchial artery embolization with polyvinyl alcohol particles and gelatin sponge for massive or continuing moderate hemoptysis caused by benign pulmonary diseases and resistant to medical treatment. Results: After BAE, bleeding stopped in 94 patients (94%). The immediate effect was unfavorable in cases where feeder vessels were overlooked or the embolization of the intercostal arteries was insufficient. Long-term cumulative hemoptysis nonrecurrence rates after the initial embolization were 77.7% for 1 year and 62.5% for 5 years. In bronchitis (n = 9) and active tuberculosis (n = 4) groups, an excellent (100%) 5-year cumulative nonrecurrence rate was obtained. The rate was lower in groups with pneumonia/abscess/pyothorax (n = 8) or with pulmonary aspergillosis (n = 9) (53.3%, 1-year cumulative nonrecurrence). There were higher incidences of early recurrence among patients with massive hemorrhage or more marked vascularity and systemic artery–pulmonary artery shunt in angiography: however, these trends were not statistically significant Conclusions: BAE can yield long-term benefit in patients with hemoptysis due to benign diseases. Technical problems in the procedure had an impact on the short-term effect. The degree of hemorrhage or the severity of angiographical findings were not significant factors affecting the outcome. The most significant factor affecting long-term results was whether the inflammation caused by the underlying disease was medically well controlled.
