    Notes: Density fluctuations in low-collisionality, low-beta (β∼0.1%), currentless plasmas produced with electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] have been studied using a 2 mm microwave scattering diagnostic. Pulsed gas puffing is used to produce transient steepening of the density profile from its typically flat shape; this leads to growth in the density fluctuations when the temperature and density gradients both point in the same direction in the confinement region. The wave number spectra of the fluctuations that appear during this perturbation have a maximum at higher k⊥ρs (∼1) than is typically seen in tokamaks. The in–out asymmetry of the fluctuations along the major radius correlates with the distribution of confined trapped particles expected for the ATF magnetic field geometry. During the perturbation, the relative level of the density fluctuations in the confinement region (integrated over normalized minor radii ρ from 0.5 to 0.85) increases from ñ/n∼1% when the density profile is flat to ñ/n∼3% when the density profile is steepened. These observations are in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations for helical dissipative trapped-electron modes (DTEMs), which are drift-wave instabilities associated with particle trapping in the helical stellarator field; they suggest that trapped-electron instabilities may play a role in constraining the shape of the density profile in ATF, but have little effect on global energy confinement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) density fluctuation reflectometer system consists of two individual reflectometers operating in the 30–40 GHz band. Each reflectometer consists of a tunable microwave source and a quadrature phase detector connected to the same antenna system. This arrangement allows two-frequency operation along the same radial chord for radial coherence measurements. The technique used in making radial coherence measurements is discussed and the results of such experiments are given. Initial experiments have shown high coherence when the frequencies of the two reflectometers are tuned close together and a clear loss of coherence as the radial separation of the cutoff layers is increased by increasing the frequency separation of the two reflectometers. Recent results have shown that local measurements of density fluctuations in plasmas with electron cyclotron heating (ECH) are possible and that detailed structure can be seen in the fluctuation spectra. In addition, radial correlation lengths have been found to be from 0.5 to 1.0 cm in ECH plasmas, with some frequency structures having correlation lengths up to 3 cm. In plasmas with neutral beam injection (NBI), the radial correlation lengths in the edge region have been found to be approximately 0.1–0.2 cm.

A four-channel flexible antenna design was chosen to monitor fluctuations within the wave number range of 3〈k⊥〈20 cm−1 and to locate the scattering volume anywhere in the stellarator minor cross section. Special attention was paid to the system calibration and to the normalization of the k spectra. Analysis of the diagnostic noise showed that the main source of spurious signal was a scattering from high-level edge turbulence driven by the second-harmonic radiation from the gyrotron used for plasma heating. This spurious signal was suppressed using waveguide filters and rearrangement of the microwave circuit elements. Evidence in support of direct scattering from a well-defined plasma volume was found. Good correlation of the scattered waves' intensity with the density scale length was observed. Use of a dual-homodyne circuit configuration made is possible to determine that the plasma density fluctuations were propagating in the electron diamagnetic direction. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Polyunsaturated fatty acids are needed for normal neonatal brain development, but the degree of conversion of the 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid precursors consumed in the diet to their respective 20-and 22-carbon polyunsaturates accumulating in the brain is not well known. In the present study, in vivo 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to monitor noninvasively the brain uptake and metabolism of a mixture of uniformly 13C-enriched 16-and 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters injected intragastrically into neonatal rats. In vivo NMR spectra of the rat brain at postnatal days 10 and 17 had larger fatty acid signals than in uninjected controls, but changes in levels of individual fatty acids could not be distinguished. One day after injection of the U-13C-polyunsaturated fatty acid mixture, 13C enrichment (measured by isotope ratio mass spectrometry) was similar in brain phospholipids, free fatty acids, free cholesterol, and brain aqueous extract; 13C enrichment remained high in the phospholipids and cholesterol for 15 days. 13C enrichment was similar in the main fatty acids of the brain within 1 day of injection but 15 days later had declined in all except arachidonic acid while continuing to increase in docosahexaenoic acid. These changes in 13C enrichment in brain fatty acids paralleled the developmental changes in brain fatty acid composition. We conclude that, in the neonatal rat brain, dietary 16-and 18-carbon polyunsaturates are not only elongated and desaturated but are also utilized for de novo synthesis of long-chain saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol.

    Notes: Spectral-based signal-processing techniques for characterizing fluctuation data from plasma discharges in the Advanced Toroidal Facility fusion experiment are described. The analysis process moves from wave form display and spectral analysis of single discharges to coherence filtering and database techniques for identifying coherent fluctuations. These analysis techniques are used to distill large volumes of spectral data from many signals per discharge (for many discharges) into simple forms suitable for comparison with the global variation of plasma parameters.

    Notes: The data system for the advanced toroidal facility (ATF) is a logical extension of the system used for the Impurity Studies Experiment ISX-B. Based on the ISX-B concepts and hardware, it extends them to provide support for long-pulse or steady-state operation of ATF. The system is now network based rather than shared memory based and can dynamically add or remove processors. The hardware consists of a pair of VAX 8700 CPUs and an assortment of MicroVAX front ends. This hardware acquires all data, generates all control waveforms, and provides trending and logging services for the safety interlock and control systems. These systems are based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) which are independent of the data system. The software consists of three major components: a master scheduling and monitoring system (SAMS) that provides synchronizing services and allocates files and memory; a signal-based data and file management package (DMG) that provides data access services; and the ORNL CAMAC driver package. All diagnostics are supported by data acquisition and analysis software (either generic or specialized) that is based on and shared by these services.

    Notes: Edge equilibrium, turbulence and transport related plasma parameters from the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] torsatron, the ZT-40M [Fusion Technol. 8, 1571 (1985)] reversed-field pinch, the Phaedrus-T [Nucl. Fusion 32, 2040 (1992)] tokamak, the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) [Nucl. Technol. Fusion 1, 479 (1981)], and the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1990 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 9] have been obtained using a standardized Langmuir probe array and a consistent set of data analysis packages. Additional data from some other devices have also been furnished via private communications and incorporated from published results. Experimental results over a wide range of parameters are compared and the turbulence contribution to edge transport are assessed. Certain physical properties that are relevant to the modeling of edge turbulence are identified: namely, shear decorrelation of turbulence, the role of resistive dissipation and electron parallel thermal conduction, radial mode structure in sheared magnetic field, and electromagnetic contribution to the parallel Ohm's law.

    Notes: The Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] has completed experiments focusing on microwave scattering measurements of density fluctuations and transport studies utilizing the modulation of dimensionless parameters. Microwave scattering measurements of electron density fluctuations in the core of low-collisionality electron cyclotron heated (ECH) plasmas show features that might be evidence of trapped electron instabilities. Starting from gyro-Bohm scaling, the additional dependence of confinement on the dimensionless parameters ν* and β (collisionality and beta) has been investigated by modulating each of these parameters separately, revealing the additional favorable dependence, τE∝τgBν*−0.18β+0.3.

    Notes: Recent experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (IAEA, Vienna, in press)] have emphasized the role of magnetic configuration control in transport studies. Long-pulse plasma operation up to 20 sec has been achieved with electron cyclotron heating (ECH). With neutral beam injection (NBI) power of ≥1 MW, global energy confinement times of 30 msec have been obtained with line-average densities up to 1.3×1020 m−3. The energy confinement and the operational space in ATF are roughly the same as those in tokamaks of similar size and field. The empirical scaling observed is similar to gyro-reduced Bohm scaling with favorable dependences on density and field offsetting an unfavorable power dependence. The toroidal current measured during ECH is identified as the bootstrap current. The observed currents agree well with predictions of neoclassical theory in magnitude and in parametric dependence. Variations of the magnetic configuration in discharges heated by ECH alone and by NBI change plasma transport and plasma profiles. Magnetic fluctuations respond to the concomitant pressure profile variations. Comparative studies of edge fluctuations in the Texas experimental tokamak (TEXT) [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (IAEA, Vienna, in press)] and the ATF stellarator showed remarkable similarity in the levels of fluctuations and the existence of a velocity shear layer.
