    Notes: Although many binary heavy rare-earth alloy systems have been studied extensively, there has been little work reported on the Dy-Lu system. The properties of single-crystal DyxLu1−x films grown by molecular beam epitaxy are reported. SQUID magnetometer and neutron diffraction measurements on samples with x=0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 show that the samples order helimagnetically with Néel temperatures of TN=90, 105, and 120 K, respectively. The helical turn angle was mapped as a function of temperature for each of the three alloys. Magnetic x-ray scattering, the first in an alloy, was observed at the (002)± positions at 15 and 60 K in the x=0.4 sample using resonant exchange scattering of synchrotron radiation at the Dy LIII edge.

    Notes: Devices have been patterned from enhanced sandwich material as well as more conventional giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sandwich material. The enhanced GMR sandwich consists of essentially adding a Cu spacer and a synthetic antiferromagnet layer to either side of a conventional sandwich stack. While devices patterned from simple sandwich material are always high resistance in the zero field bias state and decrease in resistance in an applied field, similar devices fabricated from enhanced sandwich material exhibit more complex characteristics. Depending upon the bias current density, the zero field biased state may be either low or high resistance for this structure. This effect could be useful for applications such as current or magnetic field sensing. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) to be a successful new memory technology, very dense cells with high output are necessary. As bit sizes shrink, it becomes advantageous to employ memory modes in which the uniaxial anisotropy lies along the length of the bit. For bits smaller than approximately 0.2 μm in width, curling across the bit becomes small, and the magnetization may be treated as a uniform single domain. We have modeled "pseudo spin valve" MRAM cells in the single-domain approximation. Calculations in this size regime for asymmetric giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sandwich material reveal that switching thresholds are sensitive to bit size. Submicron cells 0.4 μm×2.2 μm in size have been patterned from asymmetric GMR sandwich material and switching thresholds compare favorably with the single-domain model. These "pseudo spin valve" memory cells are very promising for nonvolatile, high speed, high-density memories. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: There is increasing evidence that the opioid inhibition of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion is mediated, at least in part, by catecholaminergic mechanisms. This study determined the effects of selective manipulation of noradrenergic and adrenergic systems on the ability of opiate receptor blockade to induce the release of LH in adult male rats.Selective depletion of hypothalamic noradrenaline levels by 80% following 6-hydroxydopamine infusions into the central tegmental tract did not alter the 2- to 3-fold increase in serum LH levels following opiate receptor blockade with naloxone (2.5 mg/kg). In contrast, both selective depletion of hypothalamic adrenaline by prior treatment with the phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase inhibitor, LY134046 (2 × 50 mg/kg) and non-selective depletion of all three catecholamines with α-methyl-p-tyrosine (250 mg/kg), abolished the naloxone-induced increase in LH.These results suggest that the inhibition of LH secretion by endogenous opioid peptides is influenced by catecholaminergic neurotransmission and further support the view that adrenaline rather than noradrenaline or dopamine is of importance in this context.

    Notes: Recent studies have suggested a functional link between cortical cholinergic output and attentional task demands, whereby acetylcholine (ACh) release is regulated according to the outcome of ongoing behaviour. To explore this hypothesis we measured ACh efflux in the rat medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) during between-session manipulations of the cognitive demands of an attentional task. Rats were trained to detect visual stimuli in a five-choice serial reaction time task (5-CSRTT) which involves sustained and divided attention. Following habituation to tethering and implantation with a microdialysis probe in the mPFC, rats were tested in the 5-CSRTT for three consecutive days, with different lengths of stimulus duration. During performance of the 5-CSRTT we measured robust, reproducible, task-related increases in ACh release in the mPFC across all sessions. Variations of the stimulus duration from the standard 0.5 s resulted in the predicted behavioural effects (reductions and increases in choice accuracy with 0.25 s and 5 s, respectively), but there was no evidence of either greater changes in ACh release in the more demanding condition or smaller changes in the less demanding condition. By contrast, in the session with 5-s stimulus duration there was a positive correlation between prefrontal cortical ACh efflux and the total number of trials completed. In summary, the present study shows that ACh efflux in the rat mPFC is increased during performance of a 5-CSRTT, but has found no evidence to support a specific relationship between cholinergic cortical output and attentional performance.

    Notes: The present study investigated the effects of excitotoxic lesions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) on dopamine (DA) and excitatory amino acid (EAA) function in the nucleus accumbens core using in vivo microdialysis in freely moving rats. As a postsynaptic marker of neuronal function, the nuclear levels of the transcriptional factor CREB and its active phosphorylated form, CREB-P, were measured in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), and in the core and shell subregions of the nucleus accumbens of sham and lesioned animals. PFC-lesioned animals exhibited a greater locomotor response to novelty and amphetamine administration (125–500 μg/kg i.v.). No change was observed in extracellular levels of glutamate or saturable d-aspartate binding (a marker for the high-affinity EAA transporter) in the nucleus accumbens of PFC-lesioned animals. Extracellular levels of DA were comparable in sham and lesioned animals under tonic conditions, however, following amphetamine administration, DA efflux was significantly attenuated in lesioned animals. No correlation was observed between microdialysate levels of amino acids and the attenuated dopaminergic response to amphetamine in lesioned animals. Further, no effect of the lesion was found on nuclear CREB protein in saline- and amphetamine-treated rats. The density of CREB-P immunoreactive nuclei, while remaining unchanged in the VTA, increased in the nucleus accumbens shell following amphetamine treatment in lesioned animals. The results show that an important modulatory role of the PFC on the behavioural response to novelty and amphetamine is associated with the level of immediate-early gene regulation rather than levels of extracellular DA and amino acids in the ventral striatum.
