Notes: Absolutely calibrated measurements of the neutron yield are important for the evaluation of the plasma performance such as the fusion gain Q in D-D operating tokamaks. The time-resolved neutron yield is measured with 235U and 238U fission chambers and 3He proportional counters in the JT-60U tokamak. The in situ calibration was performed by moving the 252Cf neutron source toroidally through the JT-60 vacuum vessel. Detection efficiencies of three 235U and two 3He detectors were measured for 92 locations of the neutron point source in toroidal scans at two different major radii. The total detection efficiency for the torus neutron source was obtained by the averaging the point efficiencies over the whole toroidal angle. The uncertainty of the resulting detection efficiency for the plasma neutrons is estimated to be ±11%.

Notes: The first results of the performance test of the large negative ion source for a JT-60U negative-ion-based neutral beam injector (N-NBI) are presented. The ion source consists of a cesium seeded multicusp plasma generator, where negative ions are produced via volume and surface processes, a 110 cm×45 cm multiaperture extractor, and a three-stage electrostatic accelerator. After negative ion production and voltage holding tests in test stands, the ion source was installed in the N-NBI system and the full power test began. Up to now, the ion source has produced 400 keV, 5.9 A (2.4 MW) D− ion beams, the world highest D− current and beam power, with a pulse duration of 0.1 s. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The negative ion based neutral beam injection system for JT-60 has operated since 1996 injecting neutral beam into JT-60 plasmas. A power flow measurement in the beam line and ion source with a water calorimeter had shown that 40%–50% of accelerated beam particles were intercepted on the two accelerator grids and the grounded grid at an ion source gas pressure of 0.2–0.3 Pa. Much of the beam loss was not caused by stripping loss of the negative ions, but rather by direct impingement of the negative ions onto the grids. After reducing the acceleration area by masking the edge area (about 13% of the extraction area) of the accelerator grid so as to minimize the edge effect of magnetic field in the arc chamber, the loss in the accelerator decreased by roughly 25%. In comparing a deuterium beam with a hydrogen beam, the neutral beam power with deuterium is lower by 30% than that of hydrogen at the same arc power, although the heat load onto the grounded grid does not change so much. The power deposition ratios along the beamline were as follows: the beam scraper in the ion source tank and the neutralizer cell received about 3% and about 7%, respectively, of the accelerated beam power, while the ion dumps for both D− and D+ received 20%–30% in total, and 30%–34% reached the neutral beam calorimeter. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Capability of beam-energy control during a beam pulse has been demonstrated in the JT-60 neutral beam injection system. In addition to the acceleration voltage, the acceleration current and magnetic field separating residual ion beams were simultaneously varied. A preprogram control was adopted to cope with the relatively long time constant of the magnetic field due to the eddy current induced in the magnet core. The overall time constant is about 0.4 s. Beam-energy control was first tested in the prototype injector unit for JT-60 and then applied in JT-60 heating experiments. By advancing the idea demonstrated here, it is possible to design future neutral beam systems with real-time beam-energy control that follows target plasma evolutions.

Notes: Development of the negative-ion sources has been conducted to realize a high power neutral beam injector for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). A high negative-ion current density of 31 mA/cm2 (H−) at a very low pressure of 0.1 Pa has been produced in a cesium seeded multicusp plasma generator which has the same concept of the ITER source. For a vacuum insulated accelerator, a voltage holding experiment of long distance vacuum gaps up to ∼1.8 m has been performed. It was clarified that the transition region of product pressure distance (pd) from the vacuum breakdown to the gas discharge is about 0.2 Pa m which is high enough from the operating region of the ITER source. A prototype vacuum insulated accelerator was fabricated based on the experiment and tested. A high-energy H− beam acceleration up to 970 keV, 37 mA, and 1 s has been successfully demonstrated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Novel, streaklike disruption features restricted to the plane of diffraction have recently been observed in images obtained by synchrotron radiation diffraction from undoped, semi-insulating gallium arsenide crystals. These features were identified as ensembles of very thin platelets or interfaces lying in {110} planes, and a structural model consisting of antiphase domain boundaries was proposed. We report here the other principal features observed in high resolution monochromatic synchrotron radiation diffraction images: (quasi)cellular structure; linear, very low-angle subgrain boundaries in 〈110〉 directions, and surface stripes in a 〈110〉 direction. In addition, we report systematic differences in the acceptance angle for images involving various diffraction vectors. When these observations are considered together, a unifying picture emerges. The postulate of thin {110} antiphase boundaries leads to an understanding not only of the streak-like diffraction features but of the other principal features as well. For the formation of such regions we propose two mechanisms, operating in parallel, that appear to be consistent with the mesoscopic structure observed by a variety of techniques.

Notes: The relationship between H. pylori infection and body mass indices is controversial.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection and body indices, and to examine the effect of H. pylori eradication therapy on body indices.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Nine-hundred and thirty-two employees of an industrial corporation were examined for H. pylori infection and body mass indices. Three hundred and two H. pylori-positive cases diagnosed with chronic gastritis by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or radiography underwent eradication therapy. Body mass indices, serum total cholesterol levels and symptom scores were obtained before and at 12 months after eradication therapy.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:There was no significant difference in body weight, body mass index (BMI) or serum total cholesterol level between the H. pylori-positive and H. pylori-negative groups. However, body weight and BMI increased significantly 12 months after eradication of H. pylori infection. In contrast, there was no significant difference in body weight and BMI 12 months after eradication therapy in the non-eradication group. Serum total cholesterol levels did not change after eradication therapy in either the eradication or non-eradication groups.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:Eradication of H. pylori infection induced an increase in BMI in industrial workers with chronic gastritis in Japan.
