    Notizen: Mass/charge spectra of secondary ions produced under energetic (∼MeV/amu) Ar ion impact on gaseous and frozen H2O targets are measured using a magnet-type mass spectrometer. The ion spectra are found to be quite different between these target phases. Multiply charged Oi+ ions with charge states i=2–6, as well as fragmented H+, O+, and OH+ ions, are clearly observed in the gas target, whereas the production of multiply charged ions is strongly suppressed in the frozen target. The most intense ion species is the parent H2O+ ion in the gas target; the H3O+ ion in the frozen target. The most outstanding feature in the frozen target is that the production of cluster ions of the type (H2O)nH+ (n=1–31), and their intensities, decreasing as the cluster size n increases, show anomalies between n=4 and n=5 and also around n=20, 21, and 22. Negatively charged cluster ions with formula (H2O)nO− and (H2O)nOH− are also efficiently produced in the frozen target.

    Notizen: A high-speed rotor which is characterized by a mechanical precession eliminator and by a magnetic suspension has been constructed. In this instrument, a cylindrical rotor 2 cm (0.02 m) in diameter and 20 cm (0.2 m) long was made of aluminum. The moment of inertia of this rotor was approximately 86 g cm2 (8.6×10−6 kg m2) about the long axis. A stable rotation of 120 000 rpm was obtained in air as well as in vacuum. The rotor was suspended vertically by a set of suspension magnets at the top of the rotor and a set at the bottom. In addition, the bottom of the rotor is flexibly supported by a ruby bearing which moves smoothly on a plate but is constrained by friction. When precession of the rotor begins, the frictional force eliminates the precession intrinsically. Measurements of slowing rate for the revolution were made at several different air pressures. There is good agreement with the theory.

    Notizen: The dc and ac conductivity of single crystal and glass of Li2B4O7 have been measured at various temperatures. It has been shown that these materials are mixed conductors in which electronic and ionic conduction coexist. In the single crystals, both the electronic conduction and ionic conduction along the c axis are much smaller than that perpendicular to the c axis. The anisotropy in the electronic conduction is considered to be due to the conduction by the π electron of the BO3 layer located on the (001) crystallographic plane. The anisotropy in the ionic conduction is also considered to be due to the diffusion of Li ions and/or protons between the BO3 layers. The thermal activation energies of the electronic conduction were 0.65 eV for glass, 1.61 eV for the crystal parallel to the c axis, and 0.78 eV for the crystal perpendicular to the c axis. The activation energy of the ionic conduction was 0.46 eV for the crystal perpendicular to the c axis.

    Notizen: Following the discovery of a first-order phase transition in annealed KOH-doped ice at 72 K, which was identified as the order–disorder transition associated with the proton positions, a structural study has now been made. Powder neutron diffraction measurements on KOD-doped D2O above and below the phase transition, together with x-ray diffraction measurements, reveal a partial ordering of the hydrogen atoms at low temperatures. The equilibrium structure of ice at low tempertures has orthorhombic symmetry, space group Cmc21, with the same lattice as the high-temperature Ih (P63/mmc) modification. The structure is polar and there is evidence that the ordered domains are less than about 40 A(ring) in dimension.

    Notizen: Nuclear spin lattice relaxation time T1 of 19F and 7Li in the solid and liquid phases of lithium tetrafluoroberyllate (Li2BeF4) were measured in the temperature range between 250 and 630 °C by means of pulse NMR technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance absorption spectra were also measured by use of a spectrometer. T1 of 19F and 7Li in the solid phase decreases exponentially as the temperature is increased. The temperature dependence of T1 of 7Li can be attributed to the diffusion of Li nuclei with an activation energy of 1.03 eV while T1 of 19F can be explained by the dipole interaction modulated by the diffusion of F ions with an activation energy of 1.23 eV. In the liquid phase T1 of 19F goes through a minimum at about 550 °C and is expressed as T1−1∝τ/(1+ω2τ2) in terms of a correlation time, τ. We obtained τ=5×10−16 exp (1.08/kT) s. It is suggested that the relaxation mechanism of 19F in the liquid phase is due to the dissociation of F ions from BeF4 complex ions and the long distance diffusion of the F ions in the liquid.

    Notizen: To elucidate the nature of dentine hypersensitivity, the effects of plaque control on the patency and occlusion of dentinal tubules were investigated systematically in situ using human dentine slabs embedded in partial dentures. The dentine slabs were divided into three groups. In group I, the dentine slabs were kept in an oral cavity without plaque control. In group II, plaque was removed mechanically by brushing. Plaque control was carried out chemically using chlorhexidine in group III. After being kept in the oral cavities for 1, 2 and 3 weeks, the slabs were removed from the partial denture, followed by SEM observation to determine the morphological changes of the dentinal tubules. When no attempt was made to remove plaque, the diameter of tubule orifices increased to 390% of the original values within 3 weeks. In contrast, dentinal tubules were found to be occluded, i.e. the tubule orifices became 〈20% of the original value within 1 week when plaque control efforts were made, using either method of plaque control. We conclude that plaque control plays one of the key roles in the patency versus occlusion of dentinal tubules, and thus in the aetiology and natural reparative process of dentine hypersensitivity.

    Notizen: The secreted protein MPB51 is one of the major proteins in the culture filtrate of Mycobacterium bovis BCG (BCG) and is a protein immunologically cross-reacting with the fibronectin binding 85 complex secreted by this bacterium. The gene encoding MPB51 (mpb51) was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Escherichia coll. The mpb51 gene was mapped downstream of the gene for 85A component with 179 bp spaces. The mpb51 gene encoded 299 amino acids, including 33 amino acids for the signal peptide, followed by 266 amino acids for the mature protein with a molecular mass of 27807.37 Da. This is the first complete sequence of MPB51. MPB51 showed 37–43% homology to the components of 85 complex. Two-dimensional electrophoresis of culture fluids of BCG and Western blotting indicated the existence of the other novel protein(s) which strongly cross-reacted with the α antigen (85B) and MPB51.

    Notizen: MPB70 is secreted in high concentrations by Mycobacterium bovis BCG substrain Tokyo (BCG Tokyo), but little by substrains Pasteur (BCG Pasteur) and M. tuberculosis. The gene encoding a MPB70 homologue secreted by BCG Tokyo was found at the upstream region of the gene encoding MPB70, with approximately 2.3 kilobase pairs (kbp) spacing: the same gene was also found in BCG Pasteur. This gene was cloned and sequenced from BCG Tokyo. The DNA sequence which contained a 663 base pair (bp) open reading frame beginning at position 1 and ending with a TAA codon at position 661 was found. Its theoretical molecular mass was calculated to be 22.068 kDa. This gene was highly homologous to the coding region of mpb70 and the deduced amino acid sequence was very similar to MPB83 reported by Harboe et al. It was speculated that the gene the authors characterized probably corresponded to the mpb83 gene.
