Notes: Precise and reproducible correlations between environmental γ-ray count rates (GRR) with rain precipitation rates (RPR) and snow precipitation rates (SPR) have been measured to be 0.18±0.02 and 4.3±0.04 (counts/s)/(mm/h), respectively. The GRR, observed with two 12.3 cm3 NaI detectors, also exhibit a diurnal cycle (period of 1.01±0.03 day, maximum around sunrise and location dependent amplitude) and a seasonal cycle (smaller amplitude and maximum in mid-February). Increased GRR during precipitation have been observed at ground level, but the effects of the diurnal cycle and other noise are reduced by more than 20 at 15 m above ground. An improved signal-to-noise ratio, response time of less than one hour and precise correlations between the peaks in GRR and precipitation rates enable real-time determinations of RPR and SPR to better than 1 mm/h. The relative insensitivity of these correlations to other meteorological conditions enables GRR to serve as remote and environmentally stable sensors of RPR and SPR. The time-dependence of GRR is consistent with that expected from variations in the presence of radon and radon progeny in the atmosphere. Change in the amplitude of the diurnal cycle may serve as a monitor of radon concentration. A γ-ray detector integrates over a large volume with good time resolution and thus may be responsive to real-time changes in radon concentrations due to increased exhalation from tectonic activity. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of a Ti seed layer on the magnetic properties and microstructure of Co77Cr19Ta4 was studied in Co77Cr19Ta4/Ti/M (M=Co91Zr3Nb6, Fe, Co) double-layered perpendicular recording media. A thin Ti film of ∼5 nm enhanced the c-axis alignment perpendicular to the film plane, resulting in a large perpendicular anisotropy Ku and the best magnetic properties under the present experimental conditions. The coercivity at this Ti thickness (3–3.7 kOe) was approximately half of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy field Hk estimated from the Ku value, even with the present thick 50 nm CoCrTa. The recording performance using a single-pole-type writing head showed that media with a 5 nm Ti layer had higher recording sensitivity compared to media without Ti layers, and a higher SN value at densities greater than 200 kFRPI. No significant loss of recording resolution due to the nonmagnetic Ti space between the CoCrTa and the back layers was observed by the use of the 5 nm Ti film. Moreover, the results for media with Fe back layers indicated that a thinner back layer with a high flux density can be used without any reduction of recording sensitivity and resolution. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high-current ECR source has been developed for oxygen implanters for use in fabricating separation by implanted oxygen (SIMOX) substrates. The new source has the following features: (1) high-current density (150 mA/cm2) and large extracted current (more than 200 mA), (2) stable and long lifetime operation (more than 200 h), (3) high O+ ratio (more than 80%), and (4) low-divergence beam. The improved performance is obtained by incorporating the following: (1) Localized high-density plasma generation at the center of the plasma chamber. (2) A newly developed multilayer window to satisfy two requirements: efficient coupling of the microwave with high-density plasma and high resistance to high-speed backstream electrons. (3) Optimized combination of plasma chamber length and axial magnetic field distribution. (4) Sophisticated compact magnetic circuit that yields the optimum magnetic field for obtaining high-density plasma. An industrial-version ECR source was developed for production use on EATON NV-200 implanters. The source was installed on an NV-200 and used to implant oxygen ions to Si wafers. Good performance compared to a duopigatron source was obtained in terms of beam transport efficiency and reliability of source operation.

Notes: A low-pressure plasma spraying technique for depositing high Tc Y-Ba-Cu-O thick films has been developed. Films with a thickness range of 20–100 μm have been prepared by using Y0.3Ba0.7CuOx powders. After post-annealing in oxygen for 1 h at 950 °C, the films, which were deposited on a nimonic alloy substrate heated at 650 °C during spraying, exhibited a zero resistance temperature of 90.6 K with a transition width (90%–10%) of 2 K and a critical current density (77 K, 0 T) of 690 A/cm2.

Notes: An ECR source has been built for production use on Eaton's NV200 oxygen implanter. It can be retrofitted in place of the duopigatron normally used on that machine. This article reports results of 200 continuous hours of operation of the source, producing 95 mA of O+ ions, on a special test stand which emulates the injector of the NV200. Currents up to 200 mA at 45 kV were briefly obtained on this stand, the upper limit being set by thermal capacity of the beam dump. The ECR source was installed on an NV200 and used to implant wafers at 200 keV. Its performance is compared to that of the duopigatron source under similar conditions.

Notes: summary  Patients with cleft palates eventually require definitive fixed or removable dental prostheses after the maintenance of arch alignment and occlusal relationship during adolescence. This case report presents application of a resin composite veneered fixed partial denture utilized as a definitive prosthesis for a bilateral cleft palate patient after stable occlusion had been established orthodontically. The composite veneered long span fixed partial denture provides adequate aesthetics and function.

Notes: Titanium-based alloys form a surface reaction layer when cast. This study investigated the effect of the surface reaction layer on the cytotoxicity of novel Ti-based binary alloys. The cytotoxicities of the novel alloys were compared with commercially pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb. Cast discs with or without the reaction layer were first tested for cytotoxicity, then for elemental release into cell-culture medium. The elements released into the extracts were measured by means of an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer. The commercial and novel binary Ti-based alloys showed no statistically significant cytotoxicity, although some trends were noted for several alloys. The presence of the reaction layer did not significantly alter the cytotoxicity. These favourable biocompatibility results show that these novel alloys have promise for use in dental restorations.

Notes: summary  The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V-XCu (1, 4 and 10 wt% Cu) alloys were examined. The castings for each alloy were made in a centrifugal titanium casting machine. Two shapes of specimens were used: a dumbbell (20 mm gauge length × 2·8 mm diameter) for mechanical property studies, and a flat slab (2 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm) for metallography, microhardness determination and X-ray diffractometry. Tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation and microhardness were evaluated. After tensile testing, the fracture surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The tensile strengths of the quaternary alloys decreased from 1016 MPa for the 1% Cu alloy to 387 MPa for the 10% Cu alloy. Elongation decreased with an increase in the copper content. The 1% Cu alloy exhibited elongation similar to Ti-6Al-4V without copper (3·0%). The results also indicated that the copper additions increased the bulk hardness of the quaternary alloy. In particular, the 10% Cu alloy had the highest hardness and underwent the most brittle fracture. The mechanical properties of cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy with 1 and 4% Cu were well within the values for existing dental casting non-precious alloys.
