    Notes: Prior studies have noted a pain relieving effect of baroreceptor stimulation and of higher tonic blood pressure in animals and humans. The present study used a new technique for the controlled, noninvasive stimulation of human carotid baroreceptors (PRES). PRES baroreceptor manipulation was delivered to both normotensive subjects (n= 11) and medication-free labile hypertensive subjects (n= 10) during both thermal and mechanical pain. Consistent with prior research, hypertensives had a higher threshold for thermal pain than did normotensives. PRES baroreceptor manipulation had no significant effect on thermal pain threshold for either group. For the mechanical pain model, the opposite results were obtained; group pain threshold did not differ, but there was a significant PRES baroreceptor stimulation effect of increasing pain threshold for both groups. Results are discussed in terms of specific features of the stimuli, dampening of pain in hypertensives, and adaptation to pain.

    Notes: The relationship between slow cortical potentials (SCPs) and response speed was investigated by training subjects to induce different cortical shifts by means of a biofeedback procedure. During two identical experimental sessions trials with visual feedback of the actual DC-shifts alternated with reaction time trials without feedback. In reaction time trials only the signal for the required change in polarity was provided. At the end of the signal interval an immediate button-press was required to stop a hissing noise. Two groups of 10 subjects each were investigated, one group receiving feed back from the left precentral recording(C3) and the other from the right precentral recording (C4). Results showed that subjects achieved control over their SCPs. At the end of the training period in the second session significant differences in SCPs between trials of the different required polarities were observed, during feedback trials as well as during reaction time trials without feedback. Subjects responded faster during trials in which a change toward more cortical negativity was required as compared to trials requiring less negativity.

    Notes: The present experiment investigates the influence of an unexpected change from an escape paradigm to uncontrollability on slow cortical potentials (SCPs) and autonomic responses (heart rate, skin conductance, and EMG). Two groups of 10 male students each participated in a reaction time experiment; subjects heard one of two warning stimuli (WS) of 6 sec duration, which signaled one of two imperative stimuli (IS), an aversive noise or a neutral tone. Subjects in the experimental group could escape the IS by pressing a microswitch within 300 msec after the onset of the IS. This possibility to escape was interrupted after an experimental period of 40 trials for another period of 40 trials, during which the IS lasted for 5 sec irrespective of the actual motor response of the subject. Yoked control subjects received WS and IS in the same sequence and length as the matched experimental partner but without having any experience of control of the IS.During the WS-interval all subjects showed a two-component negative shift of SCPs. In response to the uncontrollable aversive IS during the second experimental period, experimental subjects showed a marked postimperative negative variation (PINV). No comparable PINV was found in response to the neutral IS or in the yoked control subjects. The PINV was, furthermore, more pronounced in subjects who showed a larger differentiation in the late component of the negative shift between the aversive and the neutral WS during the first 40 trials.

    Notes: The arterial baroreceptors constitute an essential sensory link for the short-term regulation of blood pressure and may also influence higher cortical function. The present study was undertaken to evaluate previous reports of such a cortical influence under conditions of psychologically controlled, mechanical baroreceplor stimulation. This control was achieved by use of PRES (phase-related external suction), a modified neck suction technique. PRES applies short suction bursts that have a different impact on baroreceptors depending on their timing within the cardiac cycle and has the advantage that subjects cannot easily discriminate between conditions of stimulation and inhibition. Electroencephalograms were recorded from 22 subjects during PRES manipulations. A surface-negative shift of about 10 μV developed during the cuff manipulations. Over frontal-central regions, this shift was smaller during baroreceptor stimulation than during inhibition. These data provide support for the proposal that baroreceptor activation influences cortical activity.

    Notes: Symptom-specific psychophysiologiocal responding was assessed in 20 chronic back pain patients, 20 patients suffering from temporomandibular pain and dysfunction, and 20 matched healthy controls. Surface EMG from the lower and upper back, the masseter, and the biceps muscles, and heart rate and skin conductance level were continuously recorded during adaptation, resting baseline, and stressful and neutral imagery phases. Univariate and multivariate analyses of variance were performed on raw data as well as data corrected for autocorrelation. The results showed significantly higher EMG reactivity which was lateralized to the left side at the patients site of pain but not distal sites. This hyperreactivity was observed only during stressful imagery. The healthy controls displayed a significantly higher response in heart rate, but skin conductance level was not significantly different. The results are interpreted as indicative of idiosyncratic muscular response patterns to personally relevant situations at the site of pain in patients suffering from chronic muscular pain.

    Notes: The present study investigated the relationship between lateralized sensorimotor activation and lateralized elevation of electrodermal activity. Within a two-stimulus reaction time paradigm skin conductance responses (SCRs) were recorded from both hands, while subjects awaited and performed unilateral sensorimotor tasks. A tactile warning stimulus was applied 6 s prior to a tactile imperative stimulus either to the same or to the contralateral hand; the imperative stimulus was associated with a choice reaction time task.Task-dependent lateral asymmetry with larger skin conductance responses contralateral to the involved hemisphere indicated contralateral facilitatory processes rather than inhibition. This asymmetry disappeared with repeated stimulation (across trials). Only right-hand (left hemispheric) tasks proved to be sensitive to habituation.The asymmetry, recorded in slow brain potentials (SPs), assured that lateralized cortical processing was induced through the present experimental arrangement. The brain potentials specified the time course of lateralized processing, exhibiting larger late negative shifts at the precentral areas contralateral to the hand involved in the sensorimotor task and larger early negativity and a more pronounced positive evoked potential (late positive complex, LPC) contralateral to the hand stimulated by the tactile warning stimulus.

    Notes: It has been hypothesized that activation of the baroreceptor reflex arc, by its central nervous inhibitory effects, is involved in an operant learning mechanism of blood pressure elevation. The present study investigated the effects of mechanical stimulation of the baroreceptors in the carotid sinus on pain threshold and electrical brain activity in two groups of humans with different tonic blood pressure levels. In normotensives, baroreceptor stimulation lowered pain threshold as compared to a control condition, while borderline hypertensives tolerated more intense electric stimulation when baroreceptors were activated. A marked reduction of the contingent negative variation in anticipation of the aversive stimulation accompanied baroreceptor stimulation, probably a consequence of baroreceptor afferent impulses exerted via brainstem centers to cerebral cortex. The distribution of the potential change across the scalp depended on the tonic blood pressure, indicating differences in brain functioning between normotensives and borderline hypertensives.The present results suggest that the hypothesis of an operantly-conditioned blood pressure elevation under stress may be valid only in subjects with a predisposition for essential hypertension.

    Notes: Two concurrent measures of the evoked startlé response, the elicited blink reflex and the event-related potential, were measured while individuals viewed pictures that varied in pleasure and arousal. Replicating previous findings, the blink response was modulated by picture pleasantness, with larger reflexes elicited in the context of viewing unpleasant versus pleasant pictures. However, the probe P3 was primarily modulated by picture arousal, with smaller P3 responses elicited when viewing affective (pleasant or unpleasant) than when viewing neutral pictures. Both modulatory effects were sustained for probes presented in a subsequent picture imagery period. These data suggest that two measurable responses to the same startle probe are differentially modified by emotional context, with blink magnitude varying with pleasure and probe P3 varying with stimulus arousal.

    Notes: Event-related potentials to visually displayed pseudowords were registered from 13 individuals. In a differential conditioning paradigm, half of the pseudowords had previously been paired with a painful electric shock (shock words) and the other half had been presented without shock (nonshock words). Participants were asked to decide if the words had been presented during the conditioning phase or not. Larger N100 amplitudes and a more negativegoing slow wave 400–800 ms after word presentation were found for shock as compared with nonshock words. This effect was stronger over the left than over the right hemisphere. This left-lateralized negativity might reflect the activation of a cell assembly representing the memory of the learned word-shock contingency. Furthermore, the increased N100 amplitude elicited by shock as compared with nonshock words may be interpreted as an increased attentive facilitation for aversive pain-related information as a consequence of conditioning.

    Notes: Thirteen subjects were extensively trained on nine multiplication problems varying in difficulty. Practice was associated with a reaction time speed up and an attenuation of the problem size effect. The introduction of previously unpracticed problems led to a performance rebound to pretraining levels, indicating practice specificity. The event-related potentials were characterized by a late positive complex, followed by a positive slow wave. Offset latency of positive slow wave and preresponse amplitude at parietal electrodes showed practice specificity effects that systematically changed with practice and problem size, indicating an association with the load imposed on working memory. The peak of the late positive complex probably reflects task learning or adaptation effects because it was attenuated by practice predominantly at frontal electrodes, showed no practice specificity, and was not affected by problem size.
