Notes: Summary Four cases of S.S.L.E are reported. The electron microscopy findings show: 1. Tubulary inclusion bodies: They appear in three cases out of four, either in neuronal and glial nucleus or in axis cylinders. Their morphological features are similar to the nucleocapsides of myxoviruses and particularly measles-virus. 2. Other different types of nonspecific inclusions: nuclear bodies, cristalline-like rods and fibrillar bundles which may be considered as the result of a nuclear metabolic disorder, osmiophilic particles which may be seen as the result of a cellular intracytoplasmic hyperactivity. The tubules are found whatever the duration of the disease (3 months up to 5 years) may be. This might indicate that there is no autosterilization of the virus in the C.N.S. during the course of S.S.L.E. According to the most recent papers, such a disease might be interpreted as an infection indirectly induced by measles-virus with an unknown immunologic or metabolic mechanism.

Notes: Summary One case of malignant tumour of the left nasal cavity is reported in a woman 56 year old, affected by the disease 24 years. Numerous recurrences appeared and various histological diagnoses were performed. At the last surgery, the tumour invaded the ethmoïd and was a typical olfactory esthesio-neurocytoma. By electron microscopy, mature ganglion cells with dense cored vesicles (neurosecretory granules) were densely packed. Neuritic processes with microtubules were rarely normal in size and their content was most often abnormal; furthermore dystrophic axons were noted in great number.

Notes: Summary Autopsy specimens from six patients with clinically diagnosed herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis were studied. Since immunocytochemistry has been reported to be more reliable and successful method to identify HSV as the etiologic agent, antitype 1 HSV (HSV1) and antitype 2 HSV (HSV2) and the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method were applied to brain paraffin sections. Positive immunostaining was observed in front-orbital, mediobasal temporal lobes, cingulate gyrus, and insula. The staining was bilateral but predominant on one side. In neurons, the cytoplasmic staining was prominent in perikarya and processes, less often observed in nuclei, rarely seen in nuclear inclusions. The positive staining was intense in oligodendrocytes and macrophages, in both nuclei and cytoplasm. In two cases astrocytic processes were stained strongly. Perivascular lymphocytes were always negative. Positive reactions were obtained with both anti-HSV1 and anti-HSV2 but weaker with anti-HSV2. This results suggests that, because of its high sensitivity, ABC method permits viral antigen detection not feasible with other methods. However, this method lacks of accuracy for HSV typing mainly because of probable antigens changes resulting from tissue processing.

Notes: Summary One case of meningiothelial meningioma with “hyaline inclusions” (colloid-bodies or pseudopsammomas) as noted by Cushing and Eisenhardt (1938) and by Kepes (1961–1975) is reported by light and electron microscopy. Two types of these structures, either homogeneous or polymorphic, surrounded by microvilli are described and regarded as signs of secretory differentiation of tumor cells. In addition to Kepes' description, the authors show, at high magnification, the polymorphic material including homogeneous component, lamellar structures, microvesicles and dense bodies. The endocellular overproduction of the various types of “hyaline inclusions” and the nature of their material are discussed.

Notes: Summary A study on hexachlorophene encephalopathy in mice and baboons is reported. By light microscopy, a severe spongiform lesion of the central nervous system (CNS) was localized in the white matter, without myelin breakdown or cellular reaction. By electron microscopy, the myelin alteration was characterized by wide intralamellar spaces or “splitting” developed in the intraperiod line of compact sheaths. The acute changes described were induced by administration of the drug by the digestive or cutancous routes at various dosage levels in an aqueous solution or in talcum powder. The toxic effects depended on the age of the animals, the survival times and the concentrations of hexachlorophene, i.e., 6%, 3%, and 0.5%. The findings are compared with previous reports on the neurotoxicity of hexachlorophene and other chemicals in humans and experimental animals. Hexachlorophene cannot be recommended for use in young infants because of its neurotoxicity in very low doses as demonstrated in the present report.

Notes: Abstract Objective: The absorption kinetics of paracetamol is dependent on gastric emptying and its measurement was proposed as a non-invasive method to estimate gastric emptying rate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the intraindividual variability of paracetamol absorption kinetics after a semi-solid meal. Methods: The pharmacokinetics of paracetamol was studied on two occasions in 15 healthy volunteers without Helicobacter pylori antibodies. A 1-g dose of paracetamol was given as a solution together with a standardised semi-solid meal and the subjects stayed in the supine position. Results: For most of the subjects, the time course of paracetamol concentrations was similar on the two occasions. The intraindividual variability was low, with coefficients of variation of 38.3%, 8.0% and 3.8% for time to maximum plasma concentration, maximum concentration and area under the plasma concentration – time curve until 6 h, respectively. Conclusion: The assessment of paracetamol absorption kinetics is reproducible when the drug is given together with a semi-solid meal in Helicobacter pylori-negative healthy subjects.
