Notes: Summary Various observations of diffuse meningocerebral angiomatoses, which cannot be satisfactorily classified with the common phakomatoses, have been reported. They may occur at any age, with familial accumulation or sporadically. Divry and van Bogaert were the first to draw attention to such conditions in adults, where meningo-cerebral angiomatoses seemed to be combined with sudanophilic leukodystrophy. However, subsequently the latter was considered to be due to hypoxic damage to the white matter. In other observations, the severe damage to the grey matter was more evidently of hypoxic origin. Observations on two newborn individuals, sporadic examples of diffuse meningo-cerebral angiomatosis and with severe necrotic changes in the grey and white matter, are reported and discussed. Published reports on the various age-related forms are summarized and a general designation is suggested, which includes the various observations under a general heading. A parallel will be drawn between the meningo-cerebral angiomatosis and Foix-Alajouanin's disease.

Notes: Summary Female rats were infected with E. coli 0.25 by intravesical instillation. After 4 weeks, significantly higher bacterial counts (bladder puncture and renal homogenates) were found in estradiol treated rats (0.5 mg/kg/week) than in solvent controls, but the proportion of antibody-coated bacteria was significantly (P〈0.01) lower in bladder urine and renal homogenates. There was no influence of estrogens on renal histology or ureteral width. The results are compatible with an effect of estrogens on local immune response in the urinary tract.

Notes: Abstract The efficacy of endoscopic correction of reflux with the use of Teflon has been proven, but there are safety concerns because of granuloma formation and particle migration. Using glutaraldehyde cross-linked (GAX-) bovine collagen as an alternate biomaterial, animal experiments were performed with 6 female pigs and 20 beagle dogs. Primary and experimentally-induced vesicoureteral reflux was treated by endoscopic injection of bovine GAX-collagen (Zyplast) submucosally at the ureteric orifice. Radiographic controls after 6, 8, or 12 months revealed successful reflux correction in 14 of 19 treated ureters of dogs. After the animals were killed, pathohistological evaluation demonstrated persistence of the collagen depot at the site of injection even after 12 months, although not in all cases, without inflammatory or foreign-body tissue reaction. No evidence of particle migration was found. Invasion of fibroblasts and fibrocytes into the collagen depot and capillary vessel formation appeared the same after the different time intervals, and there was no difference between the two animal species. The biocompatibility of purified bovine GAX-collagen makes it an alternative to Teflon for reflux correction.

Notes: Summary This case report describes a case of an ectopical decidua formation in the ovary of a pregnant woman. It is pointed out that intensive regressive alterations of this so-called deciduoma may possibly lead to false diagnoses. The subject of its development is discussed with reference to the pertinent literature.

Notes: Summary Pathomorpliological comparative studies on structural damage to rat cardiac muscle following administration of hypertensin and arterenol, with and without pretreatment with reserpine to empty the catecholamine reserves were performed. The question is whether and to what degree angiotensin induced cardiac damage, which is viewed microscopically as the so-called epinephrine myocarditis, can be regarded as an indirect catecholamine effect. The following could be deduced: 1. Hypertensin causes a damage pattern similar to that of arterenol as seen under the light microscope and corresponds to the so-called epinephrine myocarditis. 2. The electron microscope demonstrates definite differences in the pattern of damage to the myocardium: hypertensin affects primarily the mitochondria, while arterenol affects the myofibrils. 3. Hypertensin and arterenol damage mainly the subendocardial tissue of the left heart: hypertensin affects more the region of the base of the left ventricle, arterenol more the region of the left ventricle apex. 4. Pretreatment with reserpine blocks the damaging effects of hypertensin in the rat heart for 12 hours. After 24 hours the full picture of the damage pattern has reappeared. Arterenol is lethal to animals pretreated with reserpine. 5. The pathogenesis of the damaging effects of hypertensin on rat cardiac muscle is discussed.

Notes: Summary A hitherto undescribed cardiac malformation, characterized by persistence of the primitive aortic conus and normal positioning of the great vessels, is reported and used to discuss the theory of bulbar resorption and the hypothesis of conal growth. The persistence of the primitive aortic conus is explained by the absence of bulbar contraction. The present selective inhibition of bulbar involution in normal positioning of the great vessels shows it to be a phenomenon formally independent of the transposition. Thus, the concept explaining the formal genesis of transposition is explained by arrest of torsion of the bulbar truncus is reconfirmed.

Notes: Summary The purpose of our studies was to learn whether hypertension and diabetes mellitus in men and women between 60 and 69 years of age cause a narrowing of the lumen of the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery and whether further factors inherent in the artery might influence the degree of arteriosclerosis. In 15 men and 15 women between 60 and 69 years of age with hypertension or diabetes mellitus, or without either we made 360 cross-sections of the artery, measured the percentage narrowing of the lumen, and statistically analyzed the 1440 measurements with an electronic computer and varianceanalysis. The following results seemed especially interesting: 1. Men and women between 60 and 69 years of age with hypertension or diabetes show the same degree of arteriosclerotic narrowing of the lumen as do those without hypertension or diabetes. These illnesses do not significantly affect the lumen size. 2. In men there proved to be a correlation between sex and degree of narrowing of the coronary artery. Perhaps the correlation is related to the fact the material studied from the men was non-homogeneous. 3. The region along the course of the vessel influences the narrowing of the lumen only in women, not in men. 4. The position of the arteriosclerotic plaque as regards a vascular branch shows a significant correlation with the narrowing of the lumen in women but not in men. 5. “Repetition of measurements” shows in men and women a significant effect on the narrowing of the lumen. 6. It is recommended that the model presented be applied to similar studies.

Notes: Summary The arrangement of the musculature at the aortal conus is eminently important for the interpretation of a riding aorta in the Eisenmenger complex. In the case discussed, a muscular bar coursing into the right ventricle to the crista supraventricularis was present between the annulus aortae and the VSD despite a riding aorta. This anomalous muscular connexion between the conus aortae and the right ventricle owes its existence to a primary heterotopia of the aorta caused by a premature arrest of the vectoral bulbus torsion. The subannular muscle tissue was of bulbometampullar origin.
