Description / Table of Contents: Summary Auer bodies in acute leukemia were studied by means of light and electron microscopy and cytochemistry. The fine structure of the finely granular lamellar bodies which are several microns long is described. The electron microscopic aspect of Auer bodies supports the concept of their development from azurophil granules. A few leukocyte granules containing concentrically or parallel arranged double membranes were observed. In most of the Auer bodies acid phosphatase activity can be shown.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This is a report of a case of double paraproteinemia IgAK and IgMK with Bence Jones proteinuria of kappa type. In the bone marrow of the patient nodule-like arranged infiltrations of lymphoid cells were found besides a diffuse increase of polymorphous plasma cells, whereas bones structure of the pelvis revealed changes typical for Paget's disease. In accordance with immunological, histological and immunofluorescence examinations it must be assumed that IgA paraproteins are produced in the plasma cells whereas the IgM paraproteins would originate from lymphoid cells. As a consequence of this a true biclonal gammopathy has to be considered. The possible nature of origin of biclonal and monoclonal double paraproteinemias is discussed.

Notes: Summary The development of a miniature headpiece with which action potentials can be recorded from single neurones in the visual pathway of freely moving toads is described (Figs. 2, 3, and 4). At first two questions were posed: (1) Do the retinal „off” and „on-off” ganglion cells respond when the toad casts a shadow on the retina while its eye is closed? (2) In view of the fact that toads do not perform any involuntary eye movements to help them receive information about the stationary environment, are there eye movements that are synchronized with respiration to act as a „substitute”? 1. During eye closure, the retinal „on-off” and „off” ganglion cell-classes III and IV respectively (Figs. 5A and B), are inhibited presumably by efferences from the CNS (Figs. 5C1, C2 and 6). Thus the brain of the toad receives through these ganglion cells information about changes in brightness exclusively of the surroundings. 2. When a toad sits quietly, the retinal class II, III and IV ganglion cells are not activated by a stationary visual stimulus. Under these circumstances the cells remain silent even during respiratory pressure changes in the buccal cavity. Thus the initial conclusion is that the toad receives no information about the patterned, stationary environment via the retino-tectal projection when it is sitting quietly in the present situation.

Notes: Abstract Let (A,G, α) be aC*-dynamical system withG a topological group. Let π be a representation ofA. We will show that there exists a quasiequivalent representation $$\hat \pi $$ to π which is a covariant representation, if and only if the folium of π is invariant under the action ofG and this action is strongly continuous.

Notes: Abstract Let {A, ℝ d ,α} be aC*-dynamical system, where ℝ d is thed-dimensional vector group. LetV be a convex cone in ℝ d and $$\hat V$$ its dual cone. We will characterize those representations ofA with the properties (i)α a ,a∈ℝ d is weakly inner, (ii) the corresponding unitary representationU(a) is continuous, and (iii) the spectrum ofU(a) is contained in $$\hat V$$ .

Notes: For a quantum field in a thermal equilibrium state we discuss the group generated by time translations and the modular action associated with an algebra invariant under half-sided translations. The modular flows corresponding to the algebras of the forward light cone and a space-like wedge admit a simple geometric description in two-dimensional models that factorize in light-cone coordinates. At large distances from the domain boundary compared to the inverse temperature, the flow pattern is essentially the same as time translations, whereas the zero temperature results are approximately reproduced close to the edge of the wedge and the apex of the cone. For each domain there is also a one-parameter group with a positive generator, for which the thermal state is a ground state. Formally, this may be regarded as a certain converse of the Unruh effect. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the book of Haag [Local Quantum Physics (Springer Verlag, Berlin, 1992)] about local quantum field theory the main results are obtained by the older methods of C*- and W*-algebra theory. A great advance, especially in the theory of W*-algebras, is due to Tomita's discovery of the theory of modular Hilbert algebras [Quasi-standard von Neumann algebras, Preprint (1967)]. Because of the abstract nature of the underlying concepts, this theory became (except for some sporadic results) a technique for quantum field theory only in the beginning of the nineties. In this review the results obtained up to this point will be collected and some problems for the future will be discussed at the end. In the first section the technical tools will be presented. Then in the second section two concepts, the half-sided translations and the half-sided modular inclusions, will be explained. These concepts have revolutionized the handling of quantum field theory. Examples for which the modular groups are explicitly known are presented in the third section. One of the important results of the new theory is the proof of the PCT theorem in the theory of local observables. Questions connected with the proof are discussed in Sec. IV. Section V deals with the structure of local algebras and with questions connected with symmetry groups. In Sec. VI a theory of tensor product decompositions will be presented. In the last section problems that are closely connected with the modular theory and that should be treated in the future will be discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
