    Notes: Abstract The behaviour of two rectangular midwater trawls, the RMT 1+8 and the RMT 1+8M, is described. The RMT 1+8 consists of a pair of rectangular nets contained within the same frame-a small mouth area RMT 1 of mesh size 320 μm and a larger RMT 8 of mesh size 4.5 mm. The RMT 1+8M is a multiple version of the RMT 1+8, combining three RMT 1s and three RMT 8s within the same frame. An expression is developed to describe the dependence of mouth angle on speed for the RMT 1+8 when towed horizontally. Theoretical estimates of the changes in mouth angle with speed agree well with experimental observations. Within normal towing speeds the RMT 1+8 is sensitive to changes in speed; this sensitivity is especially marked in the RMT 1. Between speeds of about 2.6 and 8.0 knots the RMT 8 does not alter its mouth angle with changes in speed; this behaviour is not shown by the RMT 1—at least within a practical speed range. The performance of the RMT 1+8M cannot be completely described by the theory developed for the RMT 1+8 and possible explanations for this are discussed. The multiple net is considerably less sensitive to changes in towing speed; all three nets of each type have similar mouth angles at a constant speed. Variations in warp load with speed for both trawls are described.

    Notes: Abstract In batch and continuous fermentations, the reduction in corrosion of SAE 1018 mild steel and 304 stainless steel caused by inhibition of the reference sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfovibrio vulgaris by a protective, antimicrobial-producing Bacillus brevis biofilm was investigated. The presence of D. vulgaris produced a thick black precipitate on mild steel and a higher corrosion rate in batch cultures than that seen in a mono-culture of non-antimicrobial-producing Pseudomonas fragi K upon the addition of SRB to the aerobic P. fragi K biofilm. In continuous reactors, the polarization resistance R p decreased for stainless steel and increased for mild steel upon the addition of SRB to a P. fragi K biofilm. Addition of either 200 μg/ml ampicillin, chloramphenicol, or ammonium molybdate to batch and continuous reactors after SRB had colonized the metal was ineffective in killing SRB, as inferred from the lack of change in both R p and the impedance spectra. However, when ampicillin was added prior to SRB colonization, the growth of SRB was completely inhibited on stainless steel in continuous reactors. Prior addition of ampicillin was only able to delay the growth of SRB on mild steel in continuous reactors. External addition of the purified peptide antimicrobial agent gramicidin S prior to the addition of SRB also inhibited the growth of SRB on stainless steel in continuous reactors, and the SRB were also inhibited on stainless steel in both batch and continuous reactors by producing gramicidin S in situ in a protective biofilm when the gramicidin-S-overproducing strain Bacillus brevis 18 was used.

    Notes: A double-blind between-patient study was carried out to compare the efficacy of pentazocine 40 mg. and pethidine 100 mg. and 50 mg. for the relief of pain during labour. After the first injection pentazocine 40 mg. and pethidine 100 mg. produced a comparable degree of analgesia. The second injection of pentazocine 40 mg. was not as effective as the second injection of pethidine 100 mg. but this may be because the duration of action of pentazocine is shorter. Side effects were not very serious with either drug, but vomiting was more common after pethidine injections; hallucinations occurred in some instances after the higher doses of pethidine.
