    Notes: Yield, proximate and fatty acids composition of white and dark meats and whole carcasses were determined in spent hens fed flax or canola seeds, fish meal and a control diet. Live weights and percent carcass cut-up yield were not affected by the diets fed. However, hens fed flax seed diets contained significantly (P〈 0.05) lower levels of cholesterol in the dark meat than the control group. The inclusion of oil seeds, in particular flax seeds in the hens diet, enriched the meats with omega-3 fatty acids (C18:3ω〉3; C20:5ω3; C22:5ω3). Omega-3 fatty acids enriched poultry meats from spent hens could be useful in the development of “health oriented” further processed poultry products.

    Notes: An entirely physical model is proposed to explain a wide range of seemingly conflicting observations of plasma-charging damage. Unlike other authors who largely ignored the role of substrate potential, we carefully track both the gate and the substrate potentials to explain the origin of the electric field developed across the thin oxide during plasma exposure. Central to this model is the fact that the surface floating potential tracks the plasma potential. Thus a nonuniform plasma drives the gate potential to a nonuniform distribution. Another important idea of this model is the continued adjustment by both the gate and the substrate of their potentials to satisfy the charge balance requirement of plasma system. The interaction between saturated ion-current, asymmetric electron-current, and the Fowler–Nordheim tunneling current produces a complex dynamic for the movements of the gate and the substrate potentials. This complex behavior of the gate and the substrate potential allows many of the reported observations in the literature to be explained logically. We explored three types of charging effect and their damage characteristics. They are dc effect, ac effect, and transient effect. The separation of dc and ac effect is artificial. They exist simultaneously and add to each other to cause more serious damage than by themselves. The model predicts antenna effects from all three types of charging effects. Unique to the ac antenna effect are saturation behavior, the oxide thickness ratio dependence, and the rf bias-frequency dependence. The effect of ON/OFF transient is explored quantitatively using the concept of effective exposed substrate area. The combination of large antenna ratio and rapid turn-off of plasma causes severe damage to gate-oxide. Magnetic field in general will worsen the charging damage. The reason for that is explained. Plasma uniformity is the most important factor governing charging damage, but is not the only factor. Plasma uniformity extending beyond the edge of the wafer is important. Mere showing that the plasma is uniform across the most part of the wafer is misleading.

    Notes: Summary Background Epidemiological evidence indicates that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is directly linked to the increase of both incidence and mortality of melanoma. However, the genetic changes caused by UV radiation that lead to melanoma formation remain poorly understood. Recently, a potential tumour suppressor gene ING1 (inhibitor of growth 1) was shown to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis in the presence of p53. We have demonstrated that the expression of ING1 is induced after UV irradiation and that ING1 enhances the repair of UV-damaged DNA. Objectives To investigate if ING1 plays a role in melanoma formation. Methods We examined p33ING1 expression levels in 14 melanoma cell lines. Results We found that p33ING1 is overexpressed at both mRNA and protein levels in melanoma cell lines compared with normal melanocytes. Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis showed band shifting in two melanoma cell lines. DNA sequencing confirmed that there were nucleotide alterations in the ING1 gene in Sk-mel-24 and Sk-mel-110 cell lines. Two silent nucleotide alterations in exon 1a were detected in Sk-mel-110. In Sk-mel-24, the A→G nucleotide alteration at codon 260 resulted in an amino acid change from Asn to Ser, while seven other nucleotide alterations were silent. To determine if the silent nucleotide alterations in these two melanoma cell lines were due to polymorphism, SSCP analysis of ING1 gene was performed in 25 healthy volunteers. No band shift was observed in the SSCP analysis, suggesting that the nucleotide alterations in the melanoma cell lines are unlikely to be due to polymorphism. Conclusions Taken together, our data demonstrate that ING1 is overexpressed, but infrequently mutated, in melanoma cell lines.

    Notes: Low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of aluminum using triethylamine alane (TEAA) is reported. This liquid source combines the chemical advantages of adduct precursors such as solid trimethylamine alane (TMAA), with the processing and handling advantages of liquid precursors such as triisobutyl aluminum (TIBA). High-purity Al films were deposited on TiN and thin in situ evaporated Cu and Ti films, which serve as activators for nucleation of Al. The electrical resistivities of the Al films on TiN were close to the 3 μΩ cm of sputtered Al. In the case of depositions on Cu, the Cu diffuses readily into the Al and serves to improve the electromigration resistance of the latter. The Al deposition rates using TEAA are 2–4 times those using TIBA at 250 °C, although the TEAA process is not fully optimized at this point and further work is needed to improve the film morphologies.

    Notes: A polarization-independent acoustically tunable optical filter is described, with 1.3 nm bandwidth and 145 nm tuning range demonstrated about a center wavelength of 1525 nm. Filtered and unfiltered beams exit from different ports of this 2×2 integrated-optic structure fabricated on a LiNbO3 substrate. The filter conversion efficiency was 97% for unpolarized light, limited by imperfect splitting of the directional-coupler polarizing beamsplitters. Using an unpolarized, 105-nm-wide light-emitting diode as the optical source, 16 dB isolation of the filtered port was achieved, both with respect to the nearest nulls and the remote background spectrum.

    Notes: To explore the ultimate threshold current limit in long-wavelength semiconductor lasers, InxGa1−xAs/InP strained-layer single quantum well laser diodes were studied for the first time by optically pumping with a 0.8 μm laser diode. Low-threshold (≤92 A/cm2) cw operation was obtained and the lasing wavelength (1.62 μm) corresponding to the transition from the first quantization state of a 25 A(ring) In0.8Ga0.2As well was observed. By taking the carrier collection efficiency (≤77%) into account, the actual threshold current density could be as low as 70 A/cm2.

    Notes: Background : Colorectal cancer screening by guaiac faecal occult blood test has been shown to reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer in Western populations. The optimal faecal occult blood test, whether guaiac or immunochemical, for colorectal cancer screening in the Chinese population remains to be defined.Aim : To compare the performance characteristics of a sensitive guaiac-based faecal occult blood test (Hemoccult SENSA) and an immunochemical faecal occult blood test (FlexSure OBT) in a Chinese population referred for colonoscopy.Methods : One hundred and thirty-five consecutive patients who were referred for colonoscopy and who met the study inclusion criteria took samples for the two faecal occult blood tests simultaneously from three successive stool specimens, with no dietary restrictions. All tests were developed and interpreted by a single experienced technician who was blind to the clinical diagnosis. The sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value for the detection of colorectal adenomas and cancers were estimated for the two tests.Results : The sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value for the detection of significant colorectal neoplasia (adenomas ≥ 1.0 cm and cancers) were 91%, 70% and 18% for Hemoccult SENSA and 82%, 94% and 47% for FlexSure OBT. The specificity and positive predictive value were significantly higher for FlexSure OBT than for Hemoccult SENSA (P 〈 0.001 and P = 0.016, respectively). Combining the positive results from both faecal occult blood tests did not improve the accuracy.Conclusion : The positive predictive value of the immunochemical faecal occult blood test for the detection of significant colorectal neoplasia was 29% better than that of the sensitive guaiac-based test. This may relate to the Chinese diet and requires further study. The poor specificity of the sensitive guaiac-based test, without dietary restriction, makes it less useful for colorectal cancer screening in a Chinese population.
