Notes: Abstract A novel group II intron has been identified in the pea (Pisum sativum) mitochondrial genome. The gene harbouring this intron is identified as rps10 (encoding protein S10 of the small ribosomal subunit) by similarity to its known homologues in bacteria and in the mitochondrion of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. The rps10 gene is transcribed in pea, the intron is removed, and RNA editing in the rps10 reading frame increases similarity to its homologue in the M. polymorpha mitochondrion. Contrary to the situation in bacteria and Marchantia, rps10 is not part of a ribosomal-protein gene cluster in pea. It is flanked upstream by the genes trnF and trnP, encoding phenylalanine-and proline-accepting tRNAs, and downstream by cox1, encoding subunit 1 of the cytochrome-c-oxidase. Southern hybridization shows that sequences homologous to rps10 exist in potato mitochondria but not in mitochondria of Oenothera berteriana and Arabidopsis thaliana. The pea rps10 intron is homologous to introns in rrn26 and cox3 in the Marchantia mitochondrial genome, while the Marchantia rps10 gene lacks an intron.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary At the Psychiatric Department, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, a behavioral competency training (Verhaltenstherapeutisches Kompetenztraining) VKT is offered to patients with early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The primary objects of VKT are, (a) patient support in coping with the diagnosis of AD, (b) mobilization of the present personal activity ressources, and (c) minimization of depressive symptoms. The VKT consits of six therapymodules: 1. behavior analysis, 2. psychoeducation, 3. stressmanagement, 4. increase of pleasant activities, 5. enhancement of social competency, and 6. modification of depressive cognitive patterns. The VKT is derived from scientific findings that show the involvement of psycho-social factors in the genesis of AD. Inadequate coping-behavior, unescapable stress and resulting neurodegenerative effects, a low premorbid niveau of activity and the presence of premorbid depressive symptoms outline the necessity of psychotherapeutic treatment in AD patients.

Notes: Abstract The problem treated in this paper is the following.Let p 1,...,p k be idempotents in a Banach algebra B, and assume p 1+...+p k =0.Does it follow that p j =0,j=1,..., k? For important classes of Banach algebras the answer turns out to be positive; in general, however, it is negative. A counterexample is given involving five nonzero bounded projections on infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space. The number five is critical here: in Banach algebras nontrivial zero sums of four idempotents are impossible. In a purely algebraic context (no norm), the situation is different. There the critical number is four.

Notes: Abstract In a commutative Banach algebraB the set of logarithmic residues (i.e., the elements that can be written as a contour integral of the logarithmic derivative of an analyticB-valued function), the set of generalized idempotents (i.e., the elements that are annihilated by a polynomial with non-negative integer simple zeros), and the set of sums of idempotents are all the same. Also, these (coinciding) sets consist of isolated points only and are closed under the operations of addition and multiplication. Counterexamples show that the commutativity condition onB is essential. The results extend to logarithmic residues of meromorphicB-valued functions.

Notes: Abstract Letf be an analytic Banach algebra valued function and suppose that the contour integral of the logarithmic derivativef′f −1 around a Cauchy domainD vanishes. Does it follow thatf takes invertible values on all ofD? For important classes of Banach algebras, the answer is positive. In general, however, it is negative. The counterexample showing this involves a (nontrivial) zero sum of logarithmic residues (that are in fact idempotents). The analysis of such zero sums leads to results about the convex cone generated by the logarithmic residues.

Notes: Abstract. Plant ion channel activities are rapidly modulated in response to several environmental and endogenous stimuli such as light, pathogen attack and phytohormones. Electrophysiological as well as pharmacological studies provide strong evidence that ion channels are essential for the induction of specific cellular responses, implicating their tight linkage to signal transduction cascades. Ion channels propagate signals by modulating the membrane potential or by directly affecting cellular ion composition. In addition, they may also be effectors at the end of signaling cascades, as examplified by ion channels which determine the solute content of stomatal guard cells. Plant channels are themselves subject to regulation by a variety of cellular factors, including calcium, pH and cyclic nucleotides. In addition, they appear to be regulated by (de)-phosphorylation events as well as by direct interactions with cytoskeletal and other cellular proteins. This review summarizes current knowledge on the role of ion chan nels in plant signaling.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of the Kinetics of Hydrolysis of Mixed Cyanothiocyanatochromates(III) by High Voltage IonophoresisThe hydrolysis of the mixed cyanothiocyanatochromates(III) is studied with respect to the influence of the light and of the darkness upon the reaction rate. As representatives the labelled complexes [Cr(N14CS)6]3minus;, [Cr(14CN)(NCS)5]3- and trans-[Cr(14CN)2(NCS)4]3-, being easy preparated, are used. After the high voltage ionophoresis, their zones on the pherogramms are located by means of the activity distribution curves. The activities of the stamped zones of the complexes are taken into account for the concentrations, in measuring the concentration-time dependance at various pH values and temperatures. The reaction rates, the half-times and the Arrhenius energy of activation are reported. The rate of hydrolysis is dependent on the structure of the complexes and 50-fold in the light.
