Notes: Core level x-ray absorption and photoemission spectra of free water clusters are presented. Core and valence photoemission spectra show a weak but gradual change with cluster size. Comparisons to spectra of the isolated molecule and solid ice indicate that water molecules have a lower average coordination in clusters than in the bulk solid. X-ray absorption spectra reveal spectral characteristics between the free molecule and the bulk. These are compared to similar spectra of the isolated molecule and solid ice, and discussed in connection to calculated structures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoelectron spectra of the argon 2p core level for free argon clusters of up to 4000 atoms are compared to detailed calculations. The comparison shows that the size-dependent shifts of the core level binding energy can be explained in a pure polarization-screening model. Important differences arise between the shifts for the bulk (interior) and the surface atoms. The agreement between experiment and theory allows the extrapolation of the cluster data to the "infinite'' solid. In this way we obtain the shifts of the core level binding energy between the free atom, the surface atom and the bulk of argon. The relation between these shifts and those of the first ionization potential is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The extreme ultraviolet beamline BW3 at Hasylab is a state of the art beamline for the energy range 15–2000 eV consisting of a triple undulator equipped with a modified high-flux SX-700 plane grating monochromator. The first three optical elements of the beamline are made of graphite coated with SiC to withstand the high heat load at the 4.5 GeV storage ring Doris III. Excellent spectral resolution of the order of 104 at the nitrogen K edge at 400 eV is obtained by replacing the elliptical focusing mirror of the original SX-700 design by a spherical mirror with very small tangent errors and with a large focal length in order to suppress spherical aberrations. In the energy range 50–1700 eV a photon flux of 1011–1013/s is obtained in a bandpass of 0.1%. Photoionization and photoemission measurements on atoms, molecules, and clusters making use of time-of-flight techniques demonstrate the excellent performance of the beamline. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The authors report on homotransplantation of a lung in two young patients who suffered from pulmonary insufficiency. In one patient the lung was destroyed by hydrochloric acid vapors and in the other patient the pulmonary insufficiency was caused by pneumonia. Initially improvement of pulmonary function could be achieved but the different resistances between the transplanted organ and the patient's own remaining lung resulted in a distribution disorder of ventilation and perfusion between the two lungs. This demonstrates the clinical difficulties and problems of ventilation after transplantation. We believe that separate positive pressure ventilation of the transplant and of the patient's own lung with different ventilation pressures as well as blocking of the pulmonary artery of the patient's own lung with a ballooncatheter could be of therapeutic value.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we discuss helium droplets as a nanoscale cryostat for a variety of fundamental experiments in condensed matter physics. Specifically, we describe our recent work on the spectroscopy of silver atoms, europium atoms and C 60 in helium droplets and compare the helium droplet, as a matrix for low temperature studies of complex systems, with traditional matrix and gas phase techniques. Further, we discuss our recent work on the production of ultra-cold metal clusters of silver, indium and europium embedded in helium droplets at a temperature (T=0.37K) two orders of magnitude lower than previously achieved in beams of free metal clusters. This work opens the door to high resolution spectroscopic studies of metal clusters and, possibly, high resolution studies of the size dependence of their superconducting properties. We further speculate on a series of experiments where we plan to use standard spectroscopic methods, developed in recent years, to exploit the helium droplet for studies of the existence, stability and dynamics of quantized vortices. Helium droplets may be the ideal system for such studies due to the complete absence of pinning sites that plague many similar experiments performed in bulk helium.

Notes: Abstract. The first highly resolved electronic spectra of small non-alkali metal clusters embedded in nanoscopic helium droplets (N≈20000) are presented. The helium droplets serve as an extremely cold liquid matrix with a temperature of 0.37 K. Resonant two-photon-ionization is used for size-selective spectroscopy on a silver cluster distribution (N≤10). Results are reported for Ag2, Ag3 and for Ag8. For the latter, a very narrow absorption spectrum is resolved corresponding to the Ag8 plasmon resonance. The linewidth of the observed resonance is a factor of two smaller than theoretical zero-temperature predictions for the plasmon line width of closed-shell metal clusters. In contrast, the lifetime of the Ag8 resonance is estimated to be of the order of nanoseconds, which is inconsistent with the plasmon picture and typical for molecular transitions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. A man of 57 suffering from nephroureterolithiasis was treated by ESWL (6 sessions) both in the prone and supine positions. Several hours after the last treatment (prone position) the patient complained about increasing abdominal pain which we found to be caused by an intra-abdominal perforation. In an emergency laparotomy we detected a perforation on the ventral wall of a small bowel loop, which was fixed at the colon ascendens on the rear side. Histological examination provided no evidence of previously existing intestinal disease. Thus, we suggest that this case is a rare major complication of ESWL.
