The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, enalapril, on blood pressure and spontaneous blood glucose levels in two rat models: our new diabetic hypertensive rat in which genetic hypertension and diabetes develop following cross-breeding of Cohen diabetic rat (CDR) and spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR); and a rat in which hypertension, hyperinsulinaemia and hyperlipidaemia were induced by fructose diet.2. The new strain of animal was fed the usual copper-poor sucrose diet, and for 4 weeks received enalapril. The fructose-induced hyperinsulinaemic animals were fed a fructose-enriched diet for 3 weeks, and enalapril 20 mg per kg per day was added to the drinking water for 2 more weeks.3. The new strain of diabetic-hypertensive rats that received enalapril showed a significant decrease in blood pressure level. The fructose-fed animals showed a fall in insulin and blood pressure following the introduction of enalapril to their diet.4. The present study confirms the advantage of the ACE inhibitor enalapril in improving the metabolic parameters of hypertensive diabetic rats, including insulin sensitivity.

    Notes: The histological response of vervet monkey oral epithelium to a negative force similar to that experienced under dentures was investigated. Using impression trays with adherent impressions linked to a vacuum pump, the epithelia of the hard palate, attached gingiva and alveolar mucosa of 16 monkeys were subjected to a continuous vacuum of -80 mmHg, and then fixed by perfusion and immersion while in situ. After processing for light microscopy, sections were measured to obtain the rete peg length, supra-papillary width, epithelial width and basal, spinous and superficial cell density 700 μm−2. Mean values and standard deviations were calculated for each measurement and, using Student's t-test, these data were compared with results obtained for normal tissue from nine additional monkeys. The vacuum caused an increase in epithelial width in the palate and attached gingiva, and a decrease in epithelial width in the alveolar mucosa. The cell density 700 μm−2 decreased significantly in all layers of the palate, but increased in the basal layer of the attached gingiva and the basal and superficial layers of the alveolar mucosa. The alveolar mucosa within 0.5 mm of the mucogingival junction showed a variable response. This study demonstrates that a vacuum of -80 mmHg modifies the structure of the oral epithelium, and this response is directly related to the functional demands of the tissue.

    Notes: summary Black's class I classic cavities were cut in 120 sound extracted human premolars and restored with one of two silver amalgams, six different base combinations, with or without cavity varnish and then aged for 3 months or 1 year. Thereafter, the restored teeth were subjected to a bacterial or acid broth in vitro carious challenge for 36 days. Resin cast impressions were made of the restoration margin of each specimen before and after the carious challenge giving a total of 240 replicas. The replicas were examined in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the margins subjected to seven marginal assessment procedures: (i) ranking using micrographs of the margin; (ii) percentage length of marginal discrepancy; (iii) Mjör assessment using six groups; (iv) number of margin segments showing a discrepancy; (v) greatest gap size; (vi) ranking based firstly on gap size and then number of margin segments showing a discrepancy; and (vii) ranking based firstly on gap size and then percentage length of marginal discrepancy. The data from procedures (i), (ii), (vi) and (vii) were examined using one-way ANOVA; a linear logistic statistical analysis examined data from procedures (iii)–(v). Statistical significance was chosen at P〈0.05. It was found that procedure (vii) was able to discriminate between variables to a greater degree than all other procedures. It is recommended that a ranking system based on greatest gap size and percentage length of marginal discrepancy be used to assess marginal quality of amalgam restorations.

    Notes: A two-dimensional, time-dependent analysis is made of array-compatible bolometers directly deposited onto a single substrate. It applies both to antenna-coupled and surface-absorbing configurations. Unlike previous spherically symmetric treatments, it allows analysis of thermal crosstalk between closely neighboring detectors, and of the effects of finite substrate thickness. In a closely packed array of surface-absorbing detectors, thermal crosstalk generally degrades the array's resolution more severely than optical (diffractive) crosstalk. Diffraction-limited resolution with surface-absorbing detectors is possible only by sacrificing either thermal resistance, and therefore sensitivity, or filling factor. With a minimum substrate thickness of Lmin, a closely packed, diffraction-limited array is limited to a thermal resistance of Zt≤0.08(κLmin)−1, where κ is the thermal conductivity of the substrate. An array of antenna-coupled bolometers is not subject to this limitation since the thermally and optically sensitive areas need not be equal.

    Notes: In this work we examine a system of inelastic particles confined to move on a line between an elastic wall and a heat source. Solving a Boltzmann equation for this system leads to an analytic expression for steady state behavior. Numerical simulations show that the system is in fact capable of simultaneously displaying both the uniform density of the analytic solution, and a state in which the particles are collected into a cluster adjacent to the elastic wall. The boundary conditions for the Boltzmann treatment are then reworked to provide a theoretical description of how smooth particle distributions and clumping phenomena can coexist. From this, we gain a prediction for the time scale of clump formation in this system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dissociation of chlorosilanes to microcrystalline silicon and its deposition on a solid substrate in a rf plasma of mixtures of argon and hydrogen was investigated as a function of the macrovariables of the plasma. The dissociation mechanism of chlorosilanes and HCl as well as the formation of silicon in the plasma state were studied by sampling the plasma with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Macrovariables such as pressure, net rf power input, and location in the plasma reactor were found to strongly influence the kinetics of dissociation. The deposition process of microcrystalline silicon films and its chlorine contamination were correlated to the dissociation mechanism of chlorosilanes and to the role of hydrogen chloride.

    Notes: In situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of both W(100) crystals and sputter-deposited tungsten films exposed to a molecular beam of XeF2 with and without an accompanying argon ion beam have yielded the fluorine coverage and the chemical states of the adsorbed fluorine as a function of temperature, exposure, and ion dose. WF, WF2, WF3, and WF4 were found to exist on the tungsten surfaces. Room and elevated temperature exposures of clean tungsten resulted in the surface population of mainly WF species with WF4 observed on nonannealed samples. Ion dose promoted the formation of higher fluorine coordination species from the WF leading to the formation of volatile WF6 and thus resulting in ion-enhanced etching of tungsten.

    Notes: We report the design and testing of an analog superconducting time-division multiplexer to instrument large format arrays of low-temperature bolometers and microcalorimeters. The circuit is designed to multiplex an array of superconducting quantum interference devices, thereby simplifying wiring and room temperature electronics. We have fabricated a prototype 8×1 multiplexer chip and show a switching rate of 1 MHz. We calculate that a 32×32 array or larger is feasible. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
