Notes: Summary Streptozotocin-diabetic isogenous Brown-Norway (BN) rats received heterotopic Wistar-Furth (WF × BN) F1 heart transplants. The functional graft survival time after different duration of diabetes and during insulin-treated diabetes was recorded. Some diabetic rats were challenged with sheep red cells, and their spleens were used in PHA stimulation and plaqueforming assays. Prolongation in heart transplant survival was found to be independent of the duration of diabetes. The prolongation disappeared promptly when insulin was administered to the diabetic rats. A depression of cellular immunoresponsiveness as measured by PHA stimulation assay was recorded during diabetes. Valid results were not obtained in the plaque-forming assay.

Notes: Abstract We retrospectively studied 175 orthotopic liver transplants in 151 patients. Of the 151 patients, 59 (39.1%) were diagnosed as having cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The rate of infection in patients treated for rejection was 48.8% as compared to 26.2% in patients without rejection (P〈0.01). Antirejection therapy was associated with culture-positive cases in 33 out of 43 patients as compared to 9 out of 16 patients who had CMV antibody titer elevations. Patients were treated with gancyclovir if they had simultaneous positive cultures from multiple sites and were seriously ill. Eighteen of the 19 patients thus treated had side effects, one of which was serious (bone marrow hypoplasia). Cultures became negative in 15 out of 17 (88%) of the surviving patients. Patient survival was similar to our overall survival rate of 87%.

Notes: Abstract Groups of isogenous Brown-Norway rats received heterotopic heart transplants from (Brown-Norway/Wistar Furth)xF1 hybrid rats. Methylprednisolone was administered IV in a daily dose of 5–40 mg/kg, using a dose interval of 24, 12, or 0 h (continuous infusion). Continuous infusion proved to be superior when small daily doses were used and then caused a more than threefold increase in graft survival. High daily doses created a substantial mortality with all dose intervals. Moreover, the equipment used for continuous drug administrations was unreliable beyond 4 weeks of infusion.
