Notes: Summary Life history and behavioural characteristics of the bamboo aphid,Pseudoregma bambucicola (Takahashi), which has sterile soldiers, were studied in the laboratory. The stadium of normal (fertile) first instar larvae was two times longer than that of second instar larvae, and the stadium of soldier-type (sterile) first instar larvae was much longer (max. 116 days) than the stadium of normal first instar, suggesting that soldiers are able to take nutrition from bamboo. Stimulation of larvae with breath, vibration of bamboo shoots or disturbing the larvae with the tip of a fine brush induced significantly more defensive acts by soldiers than those by normal larvae — the latter usually fled. Soldiers did not attack non-kin conspecific intruders or even aphids of different species, suggesting that, in this species, kin-recognition ability is low.

Notes: Summary: Genetical colony structure of an Australian swarm-founding polistine wasp, Ropalidia romandi, was analyzed. Inseminated females with developed ovaries (egg-layers) tended to have larger body size (measured at the median cell of the forewing) than non egg-layers. Two way ANOVA revealed that the difference in body size was related to both the caste and the colony of origin. The genetic relatedness among egg-layers as detected by electrophoresis was 0.336 ± 0.114 (mean ± se), and that among non egg-layers was 0.161 ± 0.035. The inbreeding coefficient among non egg-layers was found to be significantly greater than zero, but this did not seem to play a major part in the increase in relatedness among progeny. The number of effective queens (mothers of new queens) was estimated to be 2.84 per colony. This number is much smaller than the actual counts of queens. This discrepancy is discussed in terms of possibilities that wasps practice cyclical oligogyny, matriline localization within a colony, and genotypic behavioral specialization.

Notes: Summary Females of an Australian polistine wasp,Ropalidia plebeiana, often use their mandibles to cut their nest-comb in spring, dividing it into two or more completely independent nests. Prior to the division, each of the major egg layers, often with some subordinates, tended to occupy a different part of a single comb. These females gnawed cells in the intermediate zone between such “territories”, and ultimately divided the comb. Many other females also built new nests near the nest aggregations, but addition of new nests by comb cutting represented 34.8 % of the increase in nest number. This method of colony fission is so far unknown in any eusocial Hymenoptera.

Notes: Summary In Okinawa,Ropalidia fasciata males emerge at all stages of the colony cycle and they can inseminate first brood females. These first brood females can found their own nests, lay female-destined eggs on these, or work for their natal colonies. This flexible reproductive strategy ofR. fasciata is considered to be adaptive under environmental conditions where most of colonies are destroyed by typhoons, ant predation and parasitism.

Notes: Summary Genetic relationships among nine species of polistine wasps of Japan, that is,Ropalidia fasciata, Parapolybia indica, two species of the subgenusPolistes (chinensis andriparius), two species of the subgenusMegapolistes (jadwigae androthneyi) and three species of the subgenusPolistella (mandarinus, japonicus andsnelleni) of the genusPolistes, were examined by starch-gel electrophoresis of the enzymes. Dendrograms drawn from the result suggested that the generaRopalidia andParapolybia occupied distinctly different positions from seven species ofPolistes, that the subgenusPolistes diverged conspicuously from the other two subgenera in the genusPolistes, and that the subgenusPolistella was not a monophyletic group but the speciesmandarinus andjaponicus belonging to this subgenus had genetic relationships closer to the mmembers of the subgenusMegapolistes than to the speciessnelleni of the subgenusPolistella.

Notes: Summary InRopalidia plebeiana, combs made in the previous year are often reused by foundresses in the following spring and structurally divided into subnests by them. Close observations of the comb dividing process revealed that: 1) combs that had multiple “brood areas” (areas where cells had eggs) were frequently divided into subnests, while those with single brood areas were never divided; 2) groups of foundresses each occupied a particular brood area even before comb division started; and 3) frequency with which a foundress practiced comb cutting was independent of her social status or oviposition frequency. These observations suggest that the initial grouping of foundresses that colonize an old nest leads to subsequent comb division, rather than the major egg layers cutting combs to safeguard their oviposition territories from their rivals.

Notes: Summary The synthesis of 3 polypeptides with molecular weights of 103-, 80- and 78-kdalton (K) was dramatically accelerated when the cultures of human embryonic fibroblasts were transferred from 37 to 40°C. The induction of these polypeptides was not observed if actinomycin D was added to the cultures at the beginning of the rising of the temperature, indicating that this response may be mediated by increased transcription of their messenger RNA.

Notes: Abstract We have demonstrated the presence of estrogen receptor mRNA and the mature protein in the cytoplasm and nucleus, respectively, of a 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzathracene-induced submandibular gland tumor in female rats. We have previously shown that progesterone receptors are also present in human salivary gland tumors. These results suggest that endocrine therapy may be effective in treatment of submandibular gland tumors.
