    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The blood pressure responses following infusions of angiotensin II (ANG II) into the brain ventricles (i.v.t.) have been tested in spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats and in normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WK) rats. The mean arterial blood pressure increases were significantly higher in SH rats than in WK rats. Propranolol treatment reduced blood pressure increases to i.v.t. ANG II in WK, but not in SH rats. The higher sensitivity to i.v.t. ANG II in SH rats supports a role of central ANG II in the maintenance of high blood pressure in SH rats.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Angiotensin II (ANG II) wurde spontan hypertensiven (SH) Ratten und normotensiven Wistar Kyoto (WK) Ratten in den lateralen Hirnventrikel (i.v.t.) infundiert. Der mittlere arterielle Blutdruck stieg bei den SH Ratten signifikant höher an als bei den normotensiven WK Ratten. Propranolol-Vorbehandlung reduzierte die Blutdruckanstiege nach i.v.t. ANG II Infusionen bei WK Ratten, nicht aber bei SH Ratten. Die höhere ANG II Empfindlichkeit der SH Raten bestätigt frühere Ergebnisse, die darauf hinweisen, daß zentrales ANG III an der Aufrechterhaltung des hohen Blutdruckes von SH Ratten beteiligt sein kann.

    Notes: Abstract. Current methods of agricultural land evaluation in Queensland and other parts of Australia have been criticized for their inflexibility and lack of attention to costs (both private and social) associated with particular land uses. These deficiencies can limit the usefulness of land evaluation procedures in defining land capability and suitability for farm and regional land use planning. This paper outlines a new method based on soil potential ratings, that incorporates biophysical crop simulation modelling, expert systems and risk analysis. The technique is able to integrate biophysical and economic data in a measure which can be readily computed, updated and communicated to land managers.

    Notes: 1. Measurements of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sodium and osmolality were made throughout the course of one-kidney, one-wrap Grollman renal hypertension.2. Although the plasma sodium and osmolality did not rise after 28 days, CSF sodium and osmolality was increased significantly at 3 days postwrap.3. As a result, the CSF to plasma ratio for both sodium and osmolality was significantly elevated during the initial postwrap period.4. These observations suggest that an increase in CSF sodium may provide an initiating stimulus for an elevated arterial pressure in one-kidney, one-wrap renal hypertension.

    Notes: Abstract The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is an important animal model of human essential hypertension. During the first month of life, increased retention of sodium is present in the SHR which appears to be mediated by the renin-angiotensin system. The present review will discuss the role that increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system plays in sodium/body fluid regulation during early development. It is hypothesized that disordered regulation of sodium/body fluid homeostasis during this stage leads to pathological cardiovascular regulation in adulthood. Through an understanding of the relationship between sodium/body fluid balance in the young and cardiovascular function in the adult insights may be gained into both the pathological state of hypertension and the critical role played by early development in shaping homeostatic mechanisms in adulthood.
