Notes: Summary Cholesterol turnover, pool size, tissue exchange, and tissue content have been examined in normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic diabetic hamsters and matched nondiabetic controls following injection with radiolabelled cholesterol. In the hypercholesterolemic diabetics, turnover time of plasma cholesterol in both rapid and slow exchanging compartments was prolonged, and the size of the rapidly exchanging pool was increased. The total production rate of cholesterol did not appear to be altered in the hypercholesterolemic animals. In the normocholesterolemic diabetics, no abnormalities in cholesterol turnover or pool size were apparent. Measurement of tissue specific activities from 2 to 56 days after labelled cholesterol administration suggested that much of the cholesterol in aorta, kidney, adipose tissue, muscle, and brain was in slowly exchanging pools. The rates of exchange of cholesterol between plasma and tissues appeared similar in the diabetic and control groups. Significant increases in tissue cholesterol content were observed in liver, intestine, aorta, and adipose tissue of the diabetic hypercholesterolemic hamsters. In the normocholesterolemic diabetics, no abnormality in tissue cholesterol content was apparent except for a mild increase in intestinal cholesterol.

Notes: Summary Annual rings of 140–160-year-old beeches (Fagus sylvatica) from St. Ingbert, Saarland (FRG) were prepared and analyzed for 14 metals by atomic absorption spectroscopy. According to the chronological variations of their concentrations, the elements could be divided into three groups: 1) Metals without any tendency for chronological changes. This was established for Na, K, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, and Cd. 2) Metals with a recent decrease of their concentrations, appropriate for Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn. 3) Metals with a recent tendency to increase, e.g. Fe and Al. These variations are discussed in connection with the industrial history of the Saarland region and the influence of acid immissions which may alter the soil and thereby the trace element metabolism of the trees with consequences for the vitality of the plants.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The stimulating activity of Pentagastrin (ICI 50, 123) on gastric secretion of HCl was investigated. After incubation with human serum and homogenate of rat liver Pentagastrin lost its stimulating activity in rat stomach depending on time of incubation and on serum volume. We conclude, that an enzymatic hydrolysis of Pentagastrin took place.

Notes: Summary The effect of diet, age, and sex on the mineral content of primate bones was determined for free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) from the Caribbean Primate Research Center. Monkeys in this study were of known age and sex and had been provided with either a low protein (15%) or a high protein (25%) diet for most of their lives. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to assess bone mineral content. Results showed that diet had no significant effect on the bulk mineral composition of Ca, Mg, Br, and Cl in the bones. Of the minerals analyzed, only Na and Mn showed significant diet-related effects. The bone Ca content was found to be lower in females than in males when controlled for age. Finally, Ca content was found to be higher in young adults, lower at middle age, and higher in old age in both male and female monkeys. In conclusion, this study has shown that increasing protein content in the diet does not change the bulk mineral content of primate bones. The nondietary effect that Ca content of monkey bones is lower during middle age has not been previously reported.

Notes: Abstract. The authors report a case of blood-borne bilateral metastatic breast disease of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in a 21-year-old patient. The possibilities of mammography, ultrasound, and MRI in the early detection of breast metastases and their appearance on these modalities are discussed. Whereas mammography rendered no additional information due to dense breast parenchyma and ultrasound showed only a solitary tumor without definite criteria of malignancy, multifocal bilateral spread was verified with MRI and early ring-like enhancement suggested malignancy. Therefore, we conclude that MRI may provide useful information in evaluating patients with sarcomas, even when there is no clinical evidence for metastatic disease of the breast.

Notes: Abstract. Post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are a complication of immunosuppressed transplant recipients, and their incidence is reported to be 20–120 times greater than the rate in the general population. After kidney transplantation, PTLD more likely arise within the renal transplant fossa. Radiological patterns of these forms are presented and discussed, according to a review of the literature, and illustrated by cases from our institution. Ultrasound plays an essential role in the early diagnosis of PTLD by detecting a urinary obstruction associated with adenopathy or an ill-defined mass not previously seen. However, in the case of an inconclusive US examination, CT or MRI should be performed to confirm the presence of a mass. Both techniques are useful in evaluating the extension of the process within the transplantation fossa; MRI seems more accurate and can be used for the follow-up, especially after reduction in immunosuppressive therapy without transplant removal.
