Notes:
Summary Stimulated by the animal experiments of Rotthoff and associates, who used transplanted unattached segments of small intestine for replacing the Vena cava in dogs, the authors used in their personal tests padicled segments of small intestine, which had a blood supply, for plastic replacement of the inferior Vena cava. The advantages of a viable segment which consists of the serosa and the muscularis are mainly the absent tendency to contract, the smooth surface, the absence of rejection reaction and on account of this a good tendency of the anastomoses to heal as well as preservation of its elasticity, permitting adaptation to changes of the diameter of the vessel. These functional characteristics of the pedicled segment of small intestine could be partly confirmed by our examination results. Since replacement of the inferior Vena cava hitherto has been an unsolved problem it should last not least serve as a stimulus for further animal experiments which possibly may also provide an adequate experimental base for use in human beings.
